Richard J. “Dick” Price, 91, Of Johnsonburg

Richard J. “Dick” Price, 91, of 516 Woodland Ave., Johnsonburg, passed away early Wednesday morning, December 31, 2025, at UPMC-Magee Women’s Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a lengthy illness. He was born May 1, 1934, in Ridgway, a son to the late Vincent and Alice Nearing Price. On April 21, 1956, in Johnsonburg, he married the former Rebecca “Becky” Clyde, and she survives. 

A lifelong resident of Johnsonburg, Dick was a 1952 graduate of Johnsonburg High School. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church and the Johnsonburg Senior Center. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing, tossing horseshoes, and playing cards at the senior center and with his friends and he loved playing in the men’s softball league when he was younger. 

In 1996, Dick retired from Willamette Industries, Johnsonburg Mill after 40 years of service.

Luther R. “Luke” PERKINS, 53, of Port Allegany, PA, died Tuesday, December 30, 2025 in the Gatehouse, Williamsport. 

Born February 22, 1972, in Coudersport, he was the son of Dennis Randolph and Edith Louise Fitch Perkins.  A 1990 graduate of Port Allegany High School, he worked as a logger, pipefitter, and welder. 

Luke was an outdoorsman.  Surviving are: four children, Luther J. (Ember) Perkins, Hailee Perkins, Justin (Allie) Perkins, and Gracie Stahli-Dilley; three grandchildren; three brothers, Frank (Sande) Fitch, Cliff (Brenda) Colson, and Jeffrey (Tammy) Elmquist; three sisters, Rebecca Perkins, Colette Perkins, and Colleen Ross; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. 

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, John F. Colson, Jr.

Gloria L. Turner, 89, of Port Allegany

Port Allegany – Gloria L. Turner, 89, of Port Allegany, passed away Wednesday (December 31, 2025) at her home in Port Allegany.

She was born January 31, 1936, in Soldier, PA, the daughter of George and Sarah (Adamson) Mowrey. She was first married to Michael Denninson. On July 22, 1966, in Bradford, PA, she married James O. Turner, who survives.

Mrs. Turner was a graduate of Reynoldsville High School and worked as a waitress for several years, then at Ball-Incon of Port Allegany in the packing department.

Gloria was a member of AARP.

Galeton December Weather Report

As you know, winter started early in Galeton.  Snow, cold, and very windy at times. Morning readings were mainly in the 20’s.  It was zero on the 5th and minus 3 degrees on the 9th. It did manage to reach 41 on the 19th. Afternoons stayed in the 20’s and 30’s with wind. On a very few days, it did manage to reach the low 40s. Heavy sleet fell on the 26th and 27th along with freezing rain. Conditions were very slippery. No mail was delivered on the 27th, and some stores and shops were closed. Because of the icy conditions, some were housebound for a few days.

Rainfall and melted snow amounted to 3,37″ in 2024; the total was 2.88″. We received 16.5″ of snow. In 2024, the total was 15.3″. This year, we had 1″ or more of snow on the ground for 22 days. The greatest snow depth was 10″ on the 14th and 15th.  Fog showed up one morning on the 29th.

The rain/snow readings for 2025. Rain  40.08″, which is 2.21″ below the average. Snow 34.2″, which is 20″ below average.

Get ready for more of the same for January. January is the coldest month of the year. However, you may still venture into the shed or garage to look at the mower and think about spring.

TONIGHT…

A strong cold front moving in will help to generate a line of
heavier snow showers and possibly embedded dangerous snow squalls
across northwest and central Pennsylvania.

We expect heavy snow showers and possible squalls to be on a line
from:
* Near Coudersport to Bradford to Warren between 10 and 11 pm.
* Near Mansfield to St. Mary’s to Dubois between 11 pm and
midnight.
* Near Jersey Shore to Lock Haven to Clearfield between midnight
and 1 am.
* Near Williamsport to State College to Altoona to Somerset between
1 and 2 am.
* Near Bloomsburg to Harrisburg to Mechanicsburg between 2 and 3
am.
* Near Lancaster to York between 3 and 4 am.

If snow squalls develop, they will last for up to 10 to 15
minutes in any one location, with up to a half-inch to an inch of
snow in that timeframe, along with possible wind gusts of 30 to 40
mph.

This would result in a quick reduction in visibility and
perhaps localized icy roads, should a flash freeze develop. Low
traction and blinding visibility of a snow squall can make travel
very dangerous very quickly. If this combination of ingredients
becomes imminent, snow squall warnings would be issued, with very
specific information on timing, movement, and portions of
interstate highways to be affected.

Please monitor the latest conditions in your area overnight if you
will be out driving. Use extra caution if you must travel into a
snow squall, slow down, and consider exiting the highway. Rapid
changes in visibility and potentially slick roads may lead to
accidents. Please use extreme caution and allow plenty of stopping
distance. Avoid braking suddenly.

Rolfe Beagle Club To Offer 10th Annual Statewide Winter Coyote and Fox Hunt or Trap

Johnsonburg, Pa.:  Jim Pennington, Jr., President of the Rolfe Beagle Club, announces that the Rolfe Beagle Club will once again offer its popular Coyote and Fox Hunt or Trap over two weekends in February.  The 10th Annual event will take place from February 13-15 and then again on the following weekend of February 20-22.

“Our club pays out for each harvest, and the heaviest coyote for each weekend receives an extra bonus.  We have been impressed with the number of families hunting or trapping together for this event, so we want to continue to make certain that all harvests receive something,” said Jim.

Timothy Dale BILLINGS, 59, of Wellsville, NY, died Monday, December 29, 2025 in his home.  Born December 21, 1966, in Wellsville, he was the son of Burton Dale and Diane Catherine Eddings Billings.  

Tim attended Whitesville Central School and graduated from Wellsville High School.  On May 12, 2006 in Whitesville, he married Dawn E. Miller, who predeceased him on March 6, 2020.  He was employed by Penn State Seed and LaForge Disposal.  

Surviving are: three children, Zackery Dale (Shelley) Billings, Timothy Dee (Samantha) Billings, and Burton Dale Billings, all of Wellsville; two grandchildren, Zoey Elizabeth Billings and Jaelynn Mae Billings; three siblings, Brian (Vicky) Billings of Wellsville, Keith (Deb) Vangelder of Penn Yan, and Rick Billings of Hornell; nieces and nephews.  

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, James E. Billings; a sister, Elizabeth M. Stebbins; a nephew, Burton Stebbins; and a niece, Gina Billings.  Services will be held on a later date.  Memorials may be made to the family for Burton’s college.

* IMPACTS…Travel will be very difficult with snow covered roads
and very poor visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the
Wednesday evening commute.

Carol Lynn Mahoney Katzenstein of Windfall Road passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh following an illness.

Carol was born on November 11, 1955, in Lackawanna, and was the daughter of John S. and Arline E. Klavoon Mahoney Sr. On December 10, 1983 in East Aurora, she married Ira Katzenstein, who survives.

Intersection Improvement Project Continues Along The Route 54 Corridor In Montour County

Montoursville, PA – Motorists are advised that a multi-year intersection improvement project continues along the Route 54 corridor near the Route 642 west (Liberty Valley Road) and Route 642 east (Jerseytown Road) intersection in Valley and Mahoning townships, Montour County.

The Week of Monday, January 5, 2026

The contractor will continue working on the new alignment for Route 642, this work includes blasting. There will be two to three blasting events per week between the hours of 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Motorists can expect short term lane restrictions during these blasting events.

Cindy L. MADISON, 64, of Westfield, PA, died Monday, December 29, 2025 in her home.  Born August 30, 1961, in Wellsboro, she was the daughter of Ralph and Lena J. Norton Madison.  

She was employed as a home health aide and by Electri-Cord in Westfield.  

Surviving are: a son, Clayton Madison of Westfield; a granddaughter, Lena Madison; a sister, Diana Pierce of Westfield; nieces and nephews.  

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Ralph “Rusty” Madison, Jr. and Darryl L. Madison. 

Services will be private.  Burial will be in Champlin Cemetery, Westfield.  Memorials may be made to any animal care sanctuary.

Rose M. Franco, 98, of Ridgway-Johnsonburg Road, Johnsonburg, passed away early Monday morning, December 29, 2025, at her residence following a brief illness. She was born on May 7, 1927, in Johnsonburg, a daughter to the late Dominic and Mary Magra Ferragine. On September 16, 1950, in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, she married Ralph L. Franco. He preceded her in death on December 31, 2010. 

A lifelong resident of Johnsonburg, Rose was a 1945 graduate of Johnsonburg High School. She was a member of Holy Rosary Church where she was a member of the Funeral Luncheon Committee. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society, Johnsonburg Women’s Club, Card Club and the Johnsonburg Senior Center where she volunteered and delivered Meals on Wheels. Rose loved spending time at home with her children and grandchildren, making trips to the casino and playing bingo.

Rose had worked at Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital for 7 years, retiring in 1989, and she had also worked at Elk County Catholic High School, teaching Home Economics for 4 years.

By understanding how shorter days affect the body and mind, you can take small steps that make a big difference.

Why Short Days Affect Us

Sunlight plays a major role in regulating the body’s internal clock. With fewer hours of daylight, our circadian rhythm can shift, leading to changes in sleep patterns, hormone levels, and mood. Less exposure to natural light can also reduce serotonin, a neurotransmitter linked to mood stability, while increasing melatonin, which signals the body to wind down. The result: feeling sluggish, down, or unmotivated.

For some, these symptoms are mild and seasonal. For others, they may develop into Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression that typically occurs in late fall and winter. Paying attention to your symptoms is the first step in addressing them.

MURDER CONVICTION OF CONGRESS STREET MAN UPHELD

District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer reports that the appeals’ court has affirmed the conviction of convicted murderer Frederick CAMEJO, Jr.  By opinion dated December 24, 2025, the Pennsylvania Superior Court issued its opinion affirming the conviction of CAMEJO in the 2022 murder of Edward Fomby, Jr. on Congress Street in Bradford.

On the night of the murder, CAMEJO’s family member called 911 to report that CAMEJO and Fomby were involved in a verbal disagreement outside of the CAMEJO residence.  The 911 call and home surveillance videos captured the moment of the shooting.  Testimony included what witnesses and home video captured at the time of the murder including witness/evidence of statements by CAMEJO including declaring, “you’re dead now B…h” immediately after firing the fatal shots into the back of Fomby as Fomby turned and walked away from CAMEJO. CAMEJO was convicted at a jury trial in September, 2024 of Murder in the 3rd Degree, Discharge of a Firearm into an Occupied Structure and three counts of Recklessly Endangering Another Person (deadly weapon enhancement).

Denise A. Simmons, 64, Of St. Marys

Denise A. Simmons, 64, of 943 Plymouth Road, St. Marys, passed away peacefully Thursday, December 25, 2025 at her residence with her sister-in-law, Beth Nissel, by her side.

She was born May 14, 1961, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Ronald and Nancy Gleixner Nissel.  She was a resident of the area for most of her life but spent many years in Virginia.  She was a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1980.  On February 14, 2007, in Virginia, Denise married, the late Durk Simmons, who preceded her in death on November 11, 2018.

Denise is survived by three sons, Ray Erich (Elizabeth) of St. Marys, Adam Erich (Christina and her son, Kane) of Virginia, and Tyler Erich of St. Marys; a step-daughter, Jessica Gotta (Mike) of Virginia; two grandchildren: Everett and Rosie Erich; two step-grandchildren: Mikayla and Mikinly; four siblings: Lou Ann Largey (Joseph) of Kersey, Jim Nissel of St. Marys, Mark Nissel (Lisa) of St. Marys, and Bob Nissel (Beth) of St. Marys: three nieces: Krystal Fordoski, Tiffany Largey, and Ashley Nissel; a nephew, Kevin Nissel; two step-nieces: Marissa Lenze and Shawna Lenze; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Virgil Paul Harrison, 82, Of Galeton,PA

Virgil Paul Harrison – March 1, 1943 ~ December 25, 2025

Virgil passed away very peacefully in the early hours of Christmas Day, on one of two of his favorite holidays, the 4th of July being the other. He had weeks worth of different 4th of July related shirts. He would decorate his scooter and drive it proudly in the Memorial and 4th of July parades in Galeton, PA. He served in the Vietnam Era, just as all his older brothers did. Thru ancestry Virgil was related to Leonard Harrison who founded Harrison valley and the Grand canyon.

He loved to fish, especially fly fishing, and loved to teach anyone who wanted to learn how to do either. His favorite place to fish was Pine Creek. He was a diehard fan of the Buffalo Bills and the Bodine Brothers, plus Denny Hamblin. His collection of Hess Trucks includes the very first one made to the latest. He was like a little kid when he received a new one and had it out on display for everyone to see.

Virgil is survived by his son, Timmie P. (who took him fishing several times over the years and for his last season) and his son, Seth and fiancée, Emily Smith. His sister-in-law, Celesta Harrison and her children, Lafron, Patrick and Julia Ann Rider – who he played an important role in their lives growing up; as well as, Tina Rider – who he treated like his daughter. He showed their families his love of camping – which they loved to do.

Virgil leaves behind 4 generations of nieces and nephews, the morning coffee club at the Galeton Nittany, the Lancenese Family, The Upper Pine Creek Sportsmen Association Club (which he helped start with his buddy Fred), several friends he made in many years from his days at the formally known Kenshire Kampground and his dear friends, Janine and Bobby, who looked after him.
