McKean County is seeking a qualified and highly motivated applicant to perform the duties of a full-time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at the County Jail.
Primary responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
- Conduct patient assessments, perform physicals, order medications, and provide healthcare as required for all inmates at the County Jail.
- Conduct blood draws, urine samples, pregnancy testing, and strep testing as necessary.
- Maintain an accurate filing system to ensure consistency and accuracy of treatment programs and the reports prepared for the physician.
- Train inmates and staff on health issues, such as medication dispensation and what to look for in each inmate’s condition.
- Work independently, as well as under direction; make critical decisions, often in stressful situations.
- Assure accurate filing systems and compliance with record keeping requirements.
- Serve on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week as needed.
- At times must fill in for Mental Health provider, giving guidance and counseling to inmates.
- Assist in managing and tracking the inmate prescription process to ensure appropriate care and eliminate the chances of medications abuse.
- Identify and develop patient care planning and monitor the plan.
- Schedule medical testing with the County Physician and/or hospital personnel.
- Conduct research for inmate medical records.
- Take physician orders and transcribe them.
- Assist with other such duties as may be assigned for the successful operation of the department.
Requirements for Candidates:
- Minimum requirement as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
- One-year experience with adults in a treatment setting.

Preliminary Work Underway for Bridge Replacement in Hebron Township, Potter County
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced a contractor has started preliminary work to replace a bridge spanning Oswayo Creek near the intersection of Derring Hollow Road, approximately 1.5 miles Southeast of Oswayo, in Hebron Township, Potter County. This project will improve the overall condition rating of the bridge from poor to good.
Current work will have little or no impact on travel, however, crews will establish a three-day detour around the bridge in April, after which single lane closures will be used with temporary signals providing traffic control. PennDOT will issue updates on project progress as the implementation of these alternate traffic patterns approach. Once in place, the three-day detour will utilize Routes 44, 49, and 449 to route traffic around the project site.
Overall work on this project includes the replacement of the existing bridge with a new structure, reconstruction of the approaching roadway, and related construction. John Nastase Construction of Snow Shoe, PA is the contractor on this $2 million project. PennDOT anticipates completion in October.

Dr. Anita J. Herbert, 87, formerly of Derrick Road, a resident of Chapel Ridge, Bradford, passed away, Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Born January 7, 1938, in Rew, she was a daughter of the late R.D. Herbert and Carrie (Coleman) Bryson. She was a 1955 graduate of Bradford High School.
Anita was a 1959 graduate of the University of Buffalo with a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry. Anita continued her education at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine, where she earned her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1963.
Anita completed her internship and residency training at EJ Meyer Memorial Hospital in Buffalo and at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. After finishing her residencies, she came to Bradford in 1968 and practiced internal medicine, with affiliation at Bradford Hospital. In 1974 she was board-certified in Internal Medicine and became a diplomat for the National Board of Internal Medicine.

Gloria was born January 8, 1947, in Warren, PA. She was the daughter of Naomi “Jeanette” Hatch Font Walstrom and Francis Anthony “Shay”Font. Gloria was a lifelong Warren area resident. She was a 1965, graduate of Warren High School.
She worked with her husband, Victor at Suppa Shell Station, retiring after many years. She was a member of St. Joseph R.C. Church, the Ladies Auxiliaries of the Warren Eagles Aerie, Warren American Legion Post 135, and Son of Italy.
Elizabeth A. STAUB, 96, of Austin, PA

Elizabeth A. STAUB, 96, of Austin, PA, formerly of Mechanicsburg, died Friday, March 21, 2025 in UPMC Cole, Coudersport. Born July 2, 1928, in Enhaut, she was the daughter of Mason D. and Permelia Phillips Staub. She was married to Francis Gibson Staub, who predeceased her on March 13, 1988.
Elizabeth was employed by Commonwealth Bank of Harrisburg, retiring in 1976 and moving to Austin in 1983. An avid bowler, she was active in Wednesday night and Thursday morning leagues at Hickory Lanes in Coudersport. She was a longtime volunteer at Cole Memorial Hospital and served as treasurer of the Looking Glass Gift Shop for 25 years.

Angie M. Pellegrino, 97, of Warren, PA., died on Tuesday March 11, 2025, at U.P.M.C. Chautauqua Hospital, Jamestown, N.Y.
She was born January 20, 1928, in Sheffield, PA, the daughter of the late Anthony Pellegrino and Angelina (Papalia) Pellegrino. Angie was a graduate of Sheffield High School. After graduation, she went to work for the former McMillen Lumber in Sheffield until her retirement.
She spent long hours working at her family owned grocery store in Sheffield and co-owned the Warren Roll Arena. Angie had a vast knowledge of Stocks and Bonds, she would research, buy and sell, and did quite well with those. In her earlier years, Angie was a member of the Investors Club of Sheffield. She was a very devote catholic, had a strong faith, and a member of Holy Redeemer R.C. Church. After retirement, Angie found a love for golf, and even had a hole in one.

Larry L. Saar, 83, of Bradford, passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family and little dog, Penny.
He was born on October 17, 1941 in Bradford, a son of the late James and Frances Ward Saar.
He was a 1960 graduate of the Bradford Area High School.
On October 31, 1964 in the West Branch United Methodist Church; he married Kathleen Clark who survives.
Larry’s story began on a small farm up Harrisburg Run, where he grew up surrounded by family and horses. His “no fear” nature led him to ride broncos for a short time in the rodeo circuit. He worked alongside his father in their family-owned oilfield.

This year’s Be Utility Wise conference was made possible through a collaborative partnership between the PUC, PECO Energy Company, Aqua Pennsylvania Inc., Philadelphia Gas Works, and the Philadelphia Water Department, along with the support of community organizations including UESF-Philadelphia, the Energy Coordinating Agency of Philadelphia, Jefferson Health, Project HOME, and the City of Philadelphia.

She was born November 20, 1935, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Henry and Anna Haberberger Eckert. She was a retired employee of Stackpole Carbon, later Carbone of America, retiring in 1997.

His life was built on the values they instilled in him: a love of adventure (especially at the beach), helping others, a strong work ethic, and a passion for football—particularly the Buffalo Bills.

The Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s softball team put together a 6-0 week, while the college’s baseball and men’s lacrosse teams split in their games, and several basketball players received postseason honors.

On Wednesday, the Wildcats swept Penn State Schuylkill 8-0 and 9-1, both in five innings. Mackenzie Weaver of Montoursville threw a two-hitter in the opener, and Fayth Anderson of Lykens went 3 for 3, including a triple, with two RBIs and one run scored. In the second game, Weaver had the hot bat going 2 for 2 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Also, Harley Kunes of Mill Hall had a three-run triple, and Mackenzi Tice of Mansfield earned the pitching win.
MCKEAN COUNTY DRUG TASK FORCE ARRESTS MAN FOR COCAINE SALES

District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer announces that the McKean County Drug Task Force concluded a several weeks’ long investigation into cocaine delivery in the county with a recent arrest. Clarence BARKER, also known as “Prince,” formerly of Buffalo, NY, and most recently of the Oyo Hotel, in Bradford, was charged with delivering cocaine on two occasions. BARKER was charged by McKean County Drug Task Force Detective Michael Ward with two counts of Delivery of Cocaine (both felonies), two counts of Possession (misdemeanors), and two counts of Criminal Use of a Communication Facility (felonies).
The complaint alleges that, on March 6 and March 19, 2025 BARKER arranged for the sale of cocaine using a cell phone and then delivered cocaine while under surveillance of the Detectives. The Detective noted in the complaint that Task Force Detectives dedicated a significant amount of resources and hours to this investigation in order to halt and deter illegal drug trafficking activities in support of the criminal complaint filed. Additional charges are pending related to charges of attempting to take contraband into the jail and possession of a controlled substance by a prisoner or inmate. BARKER was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge David Engman who set bail at $25,000. BARKER was remanded to the McKean County Jail. He is scheduled for Central Court next Thursday.
Michael R. Bero, 65, of Warren, PA.

Michael R. Bero, 65, of Warren, PA., died Thursday afternoon, March 20, 2025, after an extended illness. Michael was born September 10, 1959, in Niagara Falls, N.Y. He is the son of Mary A. O’Donnell Johnson of Clarendon, PA., and the late Lawrence W. Bero. Michael was a resident of Warren, PA., most of his life. He was a 1978 graduate of Warren Area High School. He served with the U.S. Army as a Sergeant, in the mechanics division.
He was employed as a plastics operator in the molding department of Osram Sylvania, working there for many years, retiring due to illness. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman. He enjoyed spending time at his camp in Frewsburg, N.Y. with family, friends and especially with his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was especially attentive attending many of his son, Michael’s sporting activities, as well as his nieces, nephews and stepdaughters. He was a very proud “Uncle” who stuffed his nieces and nephews with candy and then sent them home for the parents to deal with. Michael was always there to help someone out and you could always count of him in any way.
Benita E. Taylor of St. Mary’s, PA

It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Benita E. Taylor of St. Mary’s, PA. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who passed away on Wednesday, March 19th and the age of 84.
Born in the beautiful town of Basco, Batanes, Philippines, on April 3, 1940 to the late Simon and Felisa Espinoza Del Rosario. Benita carried with her the warmth and resilience of her homeland throughout her life.
She was married to the late, Lynn H. Taylor, for 43 wonderful years. Together, they created a family that was her greatest pride and joy. She is survived by her three loving daughters, Jennifer Sparico and her husband Mark of Virginia, Kristine Burkholder and her husband Rick of Kansas, and Melissa Lambert and her husband John of Virginia who will cherish her wisdom, strength and unconditional love. She was preceded in death by her son, Darrell H. Taylor in 2023. She was also a proud grandmother to Samuel and Ava Sparico, Quinn and Carly Burkholder and to her precious great-grandson, Jett Ward.

The newly formed Nurse Honor Guard of McKean County meeting was held Sunday, March 9 in Kane. The mission of the group is to offer memorial honor services for nurses in Mckean County, Representatives from Kane, Mt Jewett, Smethport and Bradford were in attendance. Membership is open to any licensed nurse in good standing, whether retired or actively employed.
Next scheduled meeting will be held April 27,4 pm at The Post on Main, 61 West Main, Mt Jewett Pa. Any interested nurses are invited to attend.
Inez K. Jordan, 81, of Emporium, PA

Inez K. Jordan, 81, of Emporium, PA passed away unexpectedly at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown, PA on Wednesday night (March 19, 2025). She was born June 1, 1943 in St. Marys, PA a daughter of the late Lloyd and Faye Dempsey Mitchell. On August 30, 1958 in Emporium, PA she married Charles C. Jordan, who survives.
Mrs. Jordan graduated from Cameron County High School in the class of 1962. She worked in the deli at Olivett’s Grocery Store for over 23 years. She was currently serving as Secretary of Portage Township Cemetery. She was a member of the Driftwood Senior Center. Inez was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed help. She will be greatly missed.
PA Wilds Artisan Collaborative to Hold Pre-Launch Celebration on April 8 Artists will Gather at Elcam in Saint Marys
SAINT MARYS, PA – The PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship Inc. (PA Wilds Center) invites the public to celebrate a new and unique collaboration between rural artisans and manufacturers in the region. A Pre-Launch Celebration for the inaugural PA Wilds Artisan Collaborative will be held on Tuesday, April 8, from 3-5 p.m. at Elcam in Saint Marys.
The Artisan Collaborative program invested in rural artists to help them develop and bring to market new PA Wilds branded products to meet growing consumer demand.

Next Friday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. the Clements Brothers, identical twins from the heart of New England, will perform in the Coolidge Theatre at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts at 104 Main Street in Wellsboro.
George on guitar and Charles on upright bass are both singers and songwriters. They grew up in a musical family. The two have been playing and writing music together for as long as they can remember.

Born on November 12, 1933, in Wellsville, he was the son of Ralph and Hattie (Roeske) Mills.
Eugene worked construction for many years prior to his retirement.

Jon Ransom, 66, of 874 High Street, Bradford, passed away peacefully with his wife Judy, his sister Janet, and Pastor Barry via phone by his side on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at St. Vincent’s Health Center in Erie.
Born on January 8, 1959, in Bradford, he was a son of the late Robert Ransom and Margaret A. (Young) Ransom, who survives. He was a 1976 graduate from Bradford High School.
On May 29, 1998, he married Judy (Baney) Ransom, who survives.
