Firefighters Report On Bradford House Fires
Bradford City Firefighters
At 2303 Monday night City Fire was dispatched to 87 Pleasant St. for a structure fire. First arriving units were on scene within 4 minutes and found two structures on Pleasant St fully involved with exposure structures on Pearl St. heavily involved with fire in the rear in the structures. A second alarm was immediately struck at 2307 bringing in all of duty city firefighters and BTVFD.
Before additional manpower and equipment could arrive on scene a 3rd alarm was struck bringing in more firefighters and equipment. Before the last flame was extinguished the fire would go into 5 alarms.
Aggressive interior attacks extinguished any fire in the 3 houses on Pearl St. Crews rotated in and out in an effort to limit the fire spread and to save the remaining houses adjacent to the main fire buildings. Firefighters were initially met with heavy fire as the blaze had a good head start before first due companies arrived. Thankfully no members were injured.
Fire departments from all across the county and into New York State assisted on scene or were placed on standby. The American Red Cross and The Salvation Army also assisted on scene.
We can’t thank them enough for their efforts!
Firefighters worked diligently and as hard as they could to limit the fire spread to the five homes that were on fire, with a sixth house damaged.
The fire is still under investigation with a cause yet to be determined.
Captain 1-20(Kloss) had initially assumed command and as the incident grew, then passed command to Chief 1 (Taylor). Captain 110 (Scrivo) handle operations on the Pearl St side and Lieutenant 111 (Campogiani) handle operations on Pleasant St.

What is a Sip & Swipe Café? It is a place where older adults can get free self-paced lessons on how to use a tablet or smartphone. A coach works with the learner to provide support and answer questions.
The Café offers an easy, free, and safe way to learn how to use a tablet or smartphone. It is designed for those who have never touched a computer. Folks who use a computer but wish to learn how to use a tablet or smartphone are also invited to attend.
The 4-hour program covers the basics of the device – how to turn it on and how to perform activities, where the buttons are located, etc. You will also learn how to search the Internet to find information on any topic. In addition, you will learn about using email, apps, how to use the camera and access photos, and how to use YouTube to watch videos of all types.
The Sip & Swipe Café is being offered on Wednesdays, June 14 and June 21, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Education Council’s Coudersport office at 5 Water Street. Registration is required. To register, call (814) 274-4877. Space is limited, so call today.

HILLS CREEK STATE PARK IS HOLDING FREE IN-PERSON PROGRAMS THIS WEEKEND JUNE 2, 3 AND 4

Free Canoe Tour of Hills Creek Lake is Sunday, June 4
Explore Hills Creek Lake by canoe and learn about the lake’s history and management this Sunday, June 4 at 5 p.m. All equipment will be provided, including canoes, paddles and personal flotation devices. Registration is required for the canoe tour. Register in advance in-person at the park office or by calling 570-724-4246 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. Walk ups will not be accepted.
Nature Center Tour is Sunday, June 4
Come and explore the Hills Creek State Park Nature Center from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. this Sunday, June 4. See mounts of fish, birds, and mammals, as well as other interesting wildlife artifacts. Park Naturalist Jim Mucci will be available to answer questions.

Galeton Weather Report May 2023
The National Weather Service reports that May 2023 was the driest May on record. A few of the interesting readings. Harrisburg 0.19″ and Williamsport 0.44″ of rainfall. With the exception of the first five days of the month we have had a sunny and warm month. The mornings have mostly been cool with killing frosts on the 9th and 18th. All of this helps to keep the grass from growing too fast however, keep on mowing.
The average high temperature for May is 65 degrees and the average low is 42 degrees. We have had many 80 degree readings this month. The average rainfall for May is 3.66″. Our rainfall total is 1.57″. Last year we received 2.45″. It has been a very dry year thus far. We had 5 foggy mornings and two days with ice pellets.
Lawns are looking dry, however the flowering plants and trees are looking very nice.

We will be having a formal meeting on July 9th, 2023 at 6:00pm at the Sunderlinville Community Building. This is a makeup meeting for the April 17th meeting. If you are available to attend, please do. This meeting will be to vote on changes to the bylaws for the cemetery, so we would appreciate your attendance.
If you need to pay dues, you can pay at the meeting or send checks to Treasurer Katherine Dunham, 2810 Phoenix Rd, Sabinsville, PA 16943. Make checks payable to the Parker Hill Cemetery Association. Please pay dues before the meeting in order to vote on upcoming changes to the bylaws. The total amount due for dues, if you have not already paid, is $20.00. We look forward to seeing everyone there.
A special thank you to everyone who participated in the May 13th cleanup. The cemetery looks great! As an organization, we are very grateful to everyone who came out to help make our loved ones’ final resting place beautiful.

John Tyrone Goerlich, 63, of Warren, PA., and formerly of Orlando, FL
John Tyrone Goerlich, 63, passed away at home, on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, surrounded by family following an extended illness.
John was the son of Pauline Steinmeyer and stepson of Charles Steinmeyer. He attended Warren Area High School. John graduated with an associate degree from Jamestown Community College and a bachelors degree from Penn State University.
After high school, John enjoyed working at Pellegrino Foods during their early years. John considered his most challenging accomplishment to be learning the Krebr Cycle during his bio- chemistry class at Penn State. John worked briefly as a caseworker for the. PA Dept. of Welfare in Philadelphia, PA., and as a substitute teacher for Warren Area School District before starting his career as a land surveyor with American Bridge and later Allen and Company in Orlando, Fl.
John was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and especially enjoyed camping in Allegheny National Forest and Ocala National Forest, when he was in Florida. He spent a summer traveling across the United States, visiting the National Parks while camping along the way. Some of John’s surveying jobs took him to the Bahamas and the American Virgin Islands, where he very much enjoyed the island life.
John was preceded in death by his step-father, Charles Steinmeyer in 2019, and his brother-in-law, Robert Cole in 2018.
He is survived by his mother, Pauline Steinmeyer, his brother, Timothy of. Pensacola, FL, his sisters, Jeannie Cole of Home, PA., Jo Ross of Warren, PA., step-brother, Randall Steinmeyer of San Diego, CA., Step-sister, Freya Steinmeyer Wilkes of Mission Viejo, CA.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park. M. Jane Shaw, 99, of Bradford, formerly of Mercer, PA passed away on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022 at the Bradford Ecumenical Home.
Family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 3 at the First Presbyterian Church with a celebration of Jane’s life to immediately follow at 11 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Robert Klouw officiating.

Open Arms launches one-stop website to aid Bradford fire victims
Open Arms Church has launched a website to provide a one-stop place for people to find out how to help the victims of a recent fire that destroyed five homes and damaged two more on Pleasant and Pearl streets in Bradford.
The website, titled “Bradford Strong,” aims to support the affected families and the community as a whole, said church Operations Director Alex Davis.
The fire, which broke out on Monday night, May 29, left several families homeless, and dogs lost their lives in the blaze. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the community’s response has been remarkable, highlighting the city’s resilience and strength, Davis said.
The Bradford Strong website provides information on how to donate funds, clothing, food, and other essential items to the affected families.
“We wanted to create a central hub where people could find out how they can help the victims of the fire,” Davis said. “We believe that together, we can make a difference and help rebuild the lives of those affected by this tragedy.”

Elizabeth J. “Betty” WALKER, 85, of Stannards, NY
Elizabeth J. “Betty” WALKER, 85, of Stannards, NY, died Tuesday, May 30, 2023 in Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville.
Born August 19, 1937, in Scio, she was the daughter of Richard and Virginia Barhight Jacobs. On November 16, 1957, in Scio, she married Donald S. Walker, who predeceased her on May 15, 2019.
A graduate of Scio High School, she was employed as an operator by Bell Telephone Company before and after her marriage. Betty was a school bus driver in Whitesville for three years and in Scio for 19 years. She was a member of the Willing Fire Department Auxiliary and Bible Union Church in West Bingham, PA.
Betty loved to hunt and fish. She enjoyed fishing with the kids, especially her nephew, Rick. In retirement, Betty enjoyed her luncheons with her special friends throughout the years.
Surviving are: four daughters, Gale (Jerry) Varney of Dansville, Victoria Walker of Wellsville, Lynn Walker of Scio, and Ellen (Lance) Cornelius of Wellsville; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ilene Nickerson McDowell of Scio; nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a grandson, Kyle N. Walker, on August 8, 1999; and a brother, Robert Jacobs.
Friends may call Friday, June 2, 2023 from 2:00 – 4:00 & 7:00 – 9:00 PM at Olney-Foust Funeral Homes & Cremation, Crowell Chapel, 296 North Main Street, Wellsville, NY, where Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Summer Reading Begins Next Week At Coudy Library!
Summer Reading is here, with the theme of “All Together Now”! Coudersport Public Library’s summer activities will again feature a series of free programs for elementary through tweens, along with a reading component which awards participants prizes for books read.
Weekly programs begin Tuesday, June 6 and continue on Tuesdays (with one exception) through July 11. Sessions run from 11:00 a.m. to noon, and will be held at the Mitchell Park pavilion, weather permitting, or inside the Library in the event of rain.
The June 6 session will feature Joshua Roth from the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum, whose theme will be “All Together Now – At the Lumber Camps!” Joshua will discuss the history of the lumber camps that once dotted the county and will talk about the lives of the lumberjacks. There’ll be a story, a look at some of the lumberjacks’ tools, and some fun activities to go along with the theme.
On June 13, we’ll all be together for Rockin’ Rock Painting, with local rock painter extraordinaire, Lisa Bretz! A Lego Day will be held June 20 – let your imagination run wild! Bryan Budjanic from the Bureau of State Parks will speak Amazing Owls on June 27; and Pa Fins, Fur and Feathers will be the topic of the final session, on July 11 with Emily Shosh from the Potter County Conservation District. Jeffini the Great will once again bring his fun and hilarious magic show to the Library on Thursday, July 6 (instead of Tuesday); the show is open to all ages but advance registration is required and space may be limited.
The reading component of the Library’s Summer Reading activities is open to children ages preschool through teen. Beginning Monday, June 5, participants will be awarded prizes for books read (They can start counting as soon as they sign up!), as well as for program attendance. Prize awards will continue throughout the summer, until August 19.

Virginia G. Zeedar, 98, of Ludlow, PA
Virginia G. Zeedar, 98, of Ludlow, PA, died peacefully Wednesday morning, May 31, 2023. She was born April 7, 1924, in Miola, Clarion Co., PA. Virginia was the daughter of Charles Walters and Mae Swartzfager Walters Lundin.
She has resided in Ludlow, PA., for the past 63 years. Virginia was employed with the former Kane Shirt Factory. She was a member of Moriah Lutheran Church, the church Rebekah Circle, Ludlow American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliary, Ludlow Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Virginia was an avid gardener and enjoyed reading.
She is survived by her daughter, Betsy Zeedar of Ludlow, PA., her sister, Patricia Lucia and husband, Gene of Kane, PA., 2 Stepsisters – Lauren Okruch of Ludlow, PA., Marian McClintock of Waterford, PA., 1 Stepbrother – Robert Lundin of Cambridge Springs, PA., several nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Zeedar, 6 Siblings – Dean, Jerry, Dick and Merle Walters, Beulah Kirsch and June Walters.
Private funeral services will be conducted at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Gibbs Hill Cemetery, Ludlow, PA.

Robert B. Peterson, 71, of Butler, formerly of Bradford, PA
Robert B. Peterson, 71, of Butler, formerly of Bradford, PA passed away Sunday May 28, 2023, at Good Samaritan Hospice in Butler.
Born March 8, 1952, in Bradford, he was a son of the late Forest “Pete” and Kathryn (Ruth) Peterson. He was a 1970 graduate of Bradford High School.
In 1971 he enlisted in United States Marine Corp where he attained the rank of Sergeant, he was honorable discharged in 1975.
After the service had been employed at Haliburton as a Forman, retiring after 30 years.
Bob was a member of American Legion Post 108 of Bradford, where he served as President, and Post Commander.
Surviving is one sister, Denise M. Reed, of Butler, one brother, Duane (Janet) Peterson, of TN, and several nieces and nephews, including, Jenniffer Grafton and Laurie Reed and Cassandra Powell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Thomas F. Peterson, and his longtime companion Faye Anderson.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, June 1, 2023, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc. 33 South Avenue, at 1:00 pm funeral services will be held with Pastor Terri Niver, of the First Wesleyan Church, officiating. Burial will be in Willow Dale Cemetery.

CRCF board names Kirk Windus executive director
OLEAN, N.Y., May 30, 2023 — The Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation (CRCF) board of directors has named Kirk Windus its next executive director of CRCF.
Windus is currently the Foundation’s communications and fund development manager – a role held since 2016.
Windus will bring his years of institutional knowledge and well-established relationships with donors and community partners to the executive director position, currently held by Karen Niemic Buchheit, who will be retiring Sept. 1 after 13 years of service.
