Joan (Oviatt) Maynard, 84, passed away March 4, 2024, in Albemarle N.C., following a 10-year battle with Alzheimer’s.
She was born October 4, 1939, in Port Allegany the daughter of Stella Virginia (Reddington) Oviatt.
She was raised in Port Allegany and Coudersport and graduated from Coudersport High School, Class of 1957. Joan and Thomas were married on October 11, 1957.
Beyond being devoted to raising her family, she was employed as a nurse’s aide, in retail, as a florist, and as a dental office receptionist. She was a longtime resident of Coudersport until moving to North Carolina in 2015.
Gerald Joseph “Joe” Barr, 83, of Emporium, PA, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at his home.
Born in Buffalo, NY, on July 1, 1940, he was the son of the late Clair Lee and Christine Leona (Thomas) Barr, and the husband to Michele Rae Hall, who he married in 2010.
BRADFORD, PA – Abbey Paulsen, CRNP, primary care provider at Upper Allegheny Health System (UAHS) is set to lead the March Walk with a Doc. The walk will take place on Thursday, March 7 at 5 p.m. The event is hosted by Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC) and the Guidance Center (TGC) and will take place at Richard E. McDowell Trail on Campus Drive.
The walk is free and open to everyone. Prior to leading the walk, Paulsen will be discussing a health-related educational topic with participants. Her discussion topic will be colorectal cancer and screening guidelines, as March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. An alternate indoor location has been reserved for the event in the case of inclement winter weather. The location is the University of Pitt at Bradford Fitness Center located at 300 Campus Drive, Bradford, PA 16701. On March 4th, 2024, at approximately 3:03 PM, following a report of a domestic dispute and barricaded subject, Cuba Police arrested Jason T. Hunt (42) of Wellsville, NY.
Hunt was arrested on charges of harassment 2nd (Violation), criminal mischief 4th – disabling equipment to prevent a request for help (Misdemeanor), menacing 3rd (Misdemeanor), criminal obstruction of breathing (Misdemeanor) and unlawful imprisonment (Misdemeanor).
Hunt was processed, placed in front of a judge and released to appear at a later date. Hunt is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
We have been producing our own maple syrup since 2014. We plan on demonstrating the process as long as Mother Nature cooperates. We will have a variety of sizes of maple syrup, maple cream, maple peanut butter, maple/mayo mustard, maple sugar, and maple candy. You can also sample our products. BRADFORD, PA – The Pavilion, the skilled nursing facility, at Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC) will be hosting open interviews on Thursday, March 7 from 10 am to 2 pm. The event will take place in the Pavilion conference room and applicants are asked to enter through the Pavilion entrance.

The McKean County Conservation District is partnering with the Bradford Sanitary Authority and Penn State Extension to hold a free rain barrel workshop on April 5, 2024 from 10:00 – Noon. The workshop will be held at the Bradford Sanitary Authority, 410 Seward Avenue in Bradford.
Participants will learn about rain barrels and rain gardens, watershed basics and the impacts of stormwater. Participants will be able to construct and take home their own rain barrel. Bradford City residents will learn how they could reduce their stormwater fee.
While the workshop is free, it is limited to 30 participants. To register, contact the District at 814-887-4025.

JoAnna (Jo) Ross, 58, passed away at home on Saturday, March 2, 2024, in the presence of her loving family and beloved dog, following an unexpected cardiac event a few days earlier.
JoAnn was the daughter of Pauline Steinmeyer and stepdaughter of the late Charles Steinmeyer. She was a graduate of Eisenhower High School and attended Jamestown Business College. She built her career in sales starting in newspaper advertising at the Meadville Tribune. From there she worked as an account executive at several newspapers across the country including the Las Vegas Review-Journal (NV), the Manassas News & Messenger (VA) where she won the salesperson of the year award for the Northern Annual Virginia Region, and the York Dailey Record (PA).
JoAnn went on to work in digital media advertising at Auto Trader before becoming interested in real estate sales. JoAnn then went on to complete the specialized education, credentialing, and licensing required to become a licensed real estate agent. She initially worked for Keller-Williams Real Estate Agency before returning to Warren, where she worked for Berkshire Hathaway Regional Real Estate Agency, as a licensed real estate agent until her unexpected death.
All during her life she was an avid outdoors enthusiast and enjoyed four-wheeling, biking, kayaking, hiking, and bicycling and made many friends along her path in life.
Winter is the prime season for colds, seasonal viruses, and sinus infections, but few people consider that their stuffy head, sneezing, or runny nose could be allergies. Given how similar their symptoms are, it’s not easy to tell the difference between these illnesses or how to treat them.
While these illnesses may look the same to you, different things cause each of these illnesses. Here’s how you can tell them apart.
Common Cold
According to the CDC, each year adults get one cold on average. Children get two colds on average. You can get a cold when a respiratory virus attacks your immune system. Respiratory viruses spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Several types of respiratory viruses cause colds, with Rhinoviruses being one of the most common. Fever is often a symptom of colds and viral infections that are not associated with allergies. Colds can be treated at home with rest, hydration, and taking over-the-counter medications for symptom management. Most colds subside within seven days.

Smethport – Donna M. Covert, 88, of Dickinson Manor, Smethport, PA passed away Friday (March 1, 2024) at Olean General Hospital, Olean, NY.
She was born February 5, 1936 in Bradford, the daughter of Stewart E. and Della V. (Belser) Dixon . On October 15, 1954 in Lafayette, PA, she married Edward L. Covert, Jr., who died November 17, 2017.
Mrs. Covert was a resident of the area for most of her life. She worked at the Sears Store, Jaguar Manufacturing and Smethport Specialties all in Smethport. She was a secretary for the American Red Cross in Bradford for 13 years and worked for the Bradford Era for 3 years, from where she retired in 1998.
She loved camping and going to Florida in the winter. She also enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and knitting baby hats for the Bradford Hospital.
Smethport, PA. — Public and private pesticide applicators can get their recertification credits by attending an agronomic pesticide update workshop offered by Penn State Extension.
The McKean County update meeting will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 pm on Tuesday, March 12th at the McKean Co. Emergency Services training center at 17175 Route 6 West, Smethport, PA 16749. Featured topics will include spray nozzle selection, specific herbicides, Atrazine stewardship, and the disease year in review.
Cuba- Michael J. Doyle passed away Saturday, Mar. 2 at home in his sleep.
Michael was born in Cuba to John and Mary Hites Doyle on Dec. 9, 1943. As a boy he loved all things social and mechanical. His paper route took a long time each day because he chatted with his customers. One customer, an inventor and writer for the Cuba Patriot, asked Michael what he wanted to be when he grew up. Mr. Gancher recounted in an editorial that young Michael answered simply, “A good man.” His wife, children, students, and his community will attest that he became exactly that: a good man.
Michael graduated from Cuba Central School in 1961. While exploring life and learning, he obtained a bachelor’s degree from Buffalo State in 1971, a Master’s Degree in 1981, and a Doctorate degree from West Virginia University in 1991.
On Aug. 21, 1971 Michael married Connie Gifford and built her a house on a hill in Rushford where their five children grew and learned by the example of their dad.
He was a born learner, teacher, innovator, and leader. Michael taught at Wellsville Central School, Belmont BOCES, and Belfast Central School. He was a professor at the National Technology Transfer Center at Wheeling Jesuit University. Upon returning to Cuba, Michael became the Curriculum Coordinator of Math, Science, and Technology for Allegany-Cattaraugus BOCES until his retirement in 2010.
