The lone Senior to visit Rotary this week was Sophia Berhinger. She is the daughter of Andreas and Claudia and has one brother – Florian – who all live in Germany. Her host family are Deric and Marklyn Brown. Her school activities include being a member of the PAHS Cheerleading Squad, cheering for football, basketball and wrestling. She is also a member of the Yearbook Staff. Sophia will present the local Rotary Club with a program on her homeland at the February 13th meeting. She was introduced to the club by Rotarian Anna Fair.
Janet E. Otto, 82, of Toby Road, Kersey, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025, at her residence.
She was born on September 27, 1942, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, a daughter of the late Paul A., Sr., and LaMina J. Gaudette Hoffmann.
Janet was an avid reader, a lover of gardening, and found immense happiness in the company of her cherished grandchildren. She was known for her vibrant spirit and her passion for travel, especially the cherished moments she spent exploring the world with her beloved partner, Tom. Janet pursued a career in sales at St. Marys Carbon, where she was known for her dedication and strong work ethic.

Join Penn State Extension as we host a Farmer Study Circle on Thursday, January 30, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Gunzburger Building Conference Room.
Farmer Study Circles offer an inviting space for new and beginning farmers—typically in their first 10 years of farming—to share experiences, address challenges, learn new strategies, and grow their skills alongside peers and seasoned experts. Guided by the interests and needs of participants, each gathering fosters a collaborative atmosphere where farmers actively shape the conversation, ensuring relevant and practical insights. This month, we will be reviewing example farm business plans.
ServSafe is a certification program developed by the Restaurant Association Education Foundation. The course meets certification requirements for individuals who are responsible for the safe handling of food in restaurants, schools, elder care facilities, lodges, bed and breakfasts, community centers, and other food concessions (organizations or businesses that sell or prepare food regularly).
This course, taught by Rick Kralj, Penn State Educator, is scheduled for Thursdays, February 27 and March 6, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Education Council’s Coudersport office. James L. Patterson, age 84, of Wellsboro, PA, died on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
He was born on November 18, 1940 in Wellsboro, PA, a son of the late Henry “Foster” and Sybil (Vaughn) Patterson, was married to Sharon L. (Wetherbee) Patterson for 61 years, was a barber in Wellsboro for over 30 years, retired from truck driving for Tioga Transport Inc. and had served in the US Army National Guard.
Jim was a member of the United Methodist Church of Wellsboro, PA and the Ossea Lodge # 317 F&AM. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He played basketball in highschool and was a member of the Grand Canyon FFA. His hobbies were growing and selling Christmas trees, cooking, making maple syrup and loved spending time with his family and friends and his grand dogs.
Florence B. “Flo” Carter, 88, of Smethport, died Friday (January 24, 2025) at Lakeview Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Smethport.
She was born January 29, 1936, during the Great Depression, the eldest child of Robert N. and Bertha (Carey) Barr. On June 29, 1957, in Smethport, PA, she married Harold L. “Sonny” Carter, Jr., who died September 29, 2003.
Flo was a 1953 graduate of Smethport High School. She was a 1956 graduate of Bradford Hospital School of Nursing, the last nursing class that went through the hospital.
She received her RN certification and worked at Bradford Hospital for a period of time before working as an OBGYN nurse in the office of Dr. Henry in Bradford, then Dr. Jung, also of Braford. Flo was a nurse for 42 years before she retired, bringing many children into the world.
Flo was a member of the United Methodist Church of Smethport, it’s church choir, the United Methodist Women, Order of the Eastern Star, Red Hats, American Legion Auxiliary, Smethport Food Bank, Coudersport Consistry Choir with her mother, and was a founding member of the Smethport Ambulance Association. She enjoyed camping, boating, spending time with family and friends, and playing cards. Flo was part of a very tight-knit farm family with musical talents. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed being of service to others in her community. She was an inspiration and legacy of nursing to her nieces.

Vivian R. (Krause) Roby, age 92, of Wellsboro, PA, died on Saturday, January 25, 2025.
She was born on October 21, 1932 in Wellsboro, PA, a daughter of the late Harry and Florence (Briston) Krause and was married to the late Robert H. Roby. Vivian was a member of the Draper Baptist Church and enjoyed reading, bowling, baking and was a devote Christian and an excellent seamstress. She was the co-owner of Roby’s LP Gas with her husband and had also worked at Commonwealth Bank for over 30 years and the Acme grocery store.
She is survived by a daughter: Susan Champaign of Wellsboro, PA, grandson: Douglas (Nicole) Champaign, and a great grandson: Levi Champaign, sister: Dorothy Smith of Wellsboro, PA and a special sister-in-law: June Ackley of Westfield, PA.
Vivian was predeceased by a son: David W. Roby, daughter: Sandra Roby, and a grandson: David H. Roby.

GENESEE, PA—Susan A. Valentine, of Genesee, longtime educator, and beloved sister, aunt, and friend, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025, in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport, after her battle with cancer.
Born on August 26, 1950 in Reading, PA, she was a daughter of John F. and Pauline M. Blatt Valentine.

* IMPACTS…The rapid rise in water levels at the eastern end of Lake Erie may result in lakeshore flooding along the Lake Erie shore. Flooding is possible along Route 5 in Hamburg, Buffalo Harbor and Canalside, Dunkirk Harbor, and other flood prone locations. Lake ice may also get shoved onshore and cause property damage.
INSTRUCTIONS: A Lakeshore Flood Watch means that conditions favorable for lakeshore flooding are expected to develop. Residents on or near the shore should take action to protect property, and listen to local radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio for later statements or warnings.
* WHAT…Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected. The strongest gusts are most likely across Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, and western Monroe counties.
* WHERE…Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Genesee, Wyoming, and Chautauqua Counties.
* WHEN…From 7 AM Monday to 6 AM EST Tuesday.
* IMPACTS…Strong winds will blow down trees and power lines. Scattered power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

On the road at Penn State Brandywine on Wednesday, Penn College dropped an 83-73 United East decision. Livingston Cross of Union, New Jersey, led the Wildcats with 21 points and 10 rebounds, his 15th double-double of the season.
At Gallaudet University on Saturday, Penn College got back on the winning track after two losses with a 66-60 UE victory. Cross again led the way with a 20-point, 12-rebound effort, his 16th double-double.

The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners met today in Harrisburg, hearing public comment and conducting official business. The commissioners gave preliminary approval to the 2025-26 hunting and trapping seasons and bag limits, which are outlined in a separate news release. Other highlights from today’s meeting follow.
ELK LICENSE APPLICATION PROCESS COULD CHANGE
A number of changes meant to update and improve Pennsylvania’s elk license application system could be coming, if measures given preliminary approval by the Board of Commissioners get final approval in April.
First, the Game Commission is proposing to require hunters to first buy a hunting license before applying for an elk tag. Current regulations allow anyone to submit an elk license application, but only require applicants to buy a license if drawn.
Harold R. Keck, Jr. has returned to the Good Lord to rest in peace with his beloved wife, Helen, who passed away in 2015. Harold and Helen were devotedly married for 65 years, a journey that began when he first asked her out while they were in the 8th grade.
