Smethport – Ruby Marlene Burt, 82, of Smethport, passed away Saturday (July 5, 2025) at UPMC-Cole, Coudersport, after a brief illness.
She was born September 14, 1942 in Clermont, PA, a daughter of Arthur Roy and Beatrice Faye (Church) Dunkle. On December 4, 1970, in Port Allegany, PA, she married Wayne Martin Burt, who died April 1, 1986.
The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners has postponed its meeting, which had been scheduled for July 11 and 12, and will meet instead on Monday, July 28.
The postponement will allow more time for gathering public comment following the recent passage of House Bill 1431, which would repeal Pennsylvania’s Sunday hunting ban. The bill has not yet been signed into law, but is expected to be soon.
A “Wynken, Blynken and Nod” book signing is being held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. next Saturday, July 19 at From My Shelf Books and Gifts at 7 East Avenue in Wellsboro.
Signing the Wellsboro-focused version of “Wynken, Blynken, & Nod” will be Kevin Coolidge, publisher of the book, and Linda Stager, photographer.
Written by Eugene Field, the poem is in the public domain, and so Coolidge decided to publish a version of his own. “Because I write books, I formed my own publishing house,” Coolidge said. “Wynken, Blynken, & Nod” will be one of the few books that he will publish that he didn’t actually write.
Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that the next portion of Route 1010 (Genesee Mills Road) in Bingham and Harrison townships in Potter County will close Monday, July 14. This project will improve ride quality and extend the service life of more than five miles of roadway.
Montoursville, PA – A roadway resurfacing project continues on Broad Street / Lycoming Mall Drive (Route 2014) in Montoursville Borough and Fairfield Township, Lycoming County.

Suit-Kote Corporation is the prime contractor on this $2.7 million resurfacing project. Work on the project includes mill and resurface of bridge approaches, application of micro-surface treatment and line painting on Route 220 in both directions between Linden and the City of Williamsport, Route 220 north between Pine Creek and Route 287, Broad Street in Montoursville Borough, and Lycoming Mall Drive in Fairfield Township. This project is anticipated to be completed in the fall 2025, weather permitting.

Montoursville, PA – Motorists are advised that a bridge replacement project continues on Route 522 in Spring Township, Snyder County.
On Monday, July 14, 2025, , Route 522 traffic will be switched to the temporary two-lane roadway while the contractor begins removal and replacement of the existing bridge over an unnamed tributary to Beaver Creek. Motorists can expect lane shifts and slow-moving vehicles while traffic is being switched onto the temporary roadway.
Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that its Elk County Maintenance Organization will close Route 2007 (Irishtown/Old Kersey Road) on Monday, July 14, for a two-day pipe replacement project. Replacing the 78-inch pipe located approximately three-tenths of a mile west of the intersection with Fern Lane in Fox Township, Elk County, will help prepare the road for future resurfacing projects.
While the road is closed, traffic will follow a detour using Route 255 and Route 948 back to Irishtown/Old Kersey Road. In the event of rain on July 14, PennDOT will begin the work on Tuesday, July 15. Department forces will complete all work and expect to reopen the road by Wednesday, weather permitting.
Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) alerted drivers in Ferguson Township, Centre County, that they will encounter uneven pavement and rough road conditions on Route 45 for the next few weeks. The road suffered damage Monday, starting at Ferguson Township Elementary School and continuing eastbound for approximately a mile, during a shoulder widening operation for an ongoing bicycle and pedestrian improvement project.

Fredonia water customers, including those in the Town of Pomfret are on a boil water order due to treatment issues at the water plant. Water operators are working to correct the problems with the treatment processes. However, the water coming from the treatment plant is still not safe to drink without boiling. Kevin R. Gallagher, 69, of Bradford, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2025.
Born on February 27, 1956, in Bradford, he was a son of the late James P. and Marjorie (Swarm) Gallagher.
He was a 1974 graduate of Bradford Area High School and earned a Petroleum Engineering Degree from University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
Galeton Fireworks – Since 1964, the Galeton Fireworks Committee have put on a display in Centertown Park. This year was no exception. Thousands of spectators lined the streets and the area around Berger Lake to view the continuous fireworks display that lasted over 35 minutes.
Howard R. Edgreen, 85, of Jamestown, NY, formerly of Port Allegany, PA, died Tuesday (July 8, 2025) at UPMC-Chautauqua, Jamestown, NY.
He was born September 19, 1939 in Port Allegany, the son of Bruce and Naomi Blanchard Edgreen. On June 25, 1960, in Port Allegany, PA, he married Georgia Ann Lilly, who died August 30, 2021. They were married 61 years.
Mr. Edgreen was a 1958 graduate of Port Allegany High School. He went to work out of high school for the Pierce Glass Company in Port Allegany and retired from work when it was under the Ball Foster ownership after 40 years of employment.
Karl L. Simonds, age 75, of Tioga, PA, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2025. He was born on September 14, 1949 in Tioga, PA, a son of the late Oscar and Mildred (Cole) Simonds and was the husband of Cheri V. Wheatley.
He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the US Marine Corps. Karl was retired from Commonwealth Telephone Company and enjoyed hunting, raising deer and fish, his 1956 Willy’s – Jeep and taking care of his home and yard.

Roger Dale Tingue, 67, of 3 Bayberry Court, Bradford, passed away, Friday, January 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at his home.

Legislation that will fully repeal Pennsylvania’s Sunday hunting ban was signed into law today by Gov. Josh Shapiro, marking a historic day for Pennsylvania hunters and the future of wildlife conservation in the Commonwealth.
“The Pennsylvania Game Commission could not be more excited to celebrate this long-awaited moment,” Executive Director Steve Smith said. “This landmark law effectively will contribute to keeping hunters engaged and performing the valuable public service they provide in helping manage our wildlife populations and ensuring the future of wildlife conservation. Today is a win for wildlife. Today will forever be remembered.
“We could not have reached this milestone alone,” Smith said. “Many thanks go to Representative Mandy Steele, who sponsored House Bill 1431, which was signed into law today; all supporting members of the General Assembly, including Senator Dan Laughlin, who long has championed this issue; Governor Shapiro; a multitude of sportsmen’s groups who care deeply about wildlife; the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau; and last but not least, the hard-working staff of the Pennsylvania Game Commission and our Board of Commissioners. Smith said the Game Commission plans to implement new Sunday hunting opportunities this fall.
