BRADFORD, PA – The United Way of the Bradford Area is expanding its inaugural 814 Day of Action to provide more opportunities for community members to get involved in volunteer service.

While Friday, August 14, will continue to celebrate 814 Day through internal volunteer projects hosted by local businesses, organizations, schools, churches, and civic groups, the larger community volunteer projects will now take place on Saturday, August 15. The change was made to allow more individuals and families to participate without weekday work commitments preventing them from volunteering.

Efforts to restore a long-lost native fish species to the Three Rivers continued today, as the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) stocked thousands of Blue Catfish.  These juvenile Blue Catfish are about 14 months old and measure only 10-to-12 inches now but can eventually grow to weigh more than 100 pounds.  Blue Catfish, which are the largest species of catfish in North America, are native to the Ohio River basin, including the Monongahela and lower Allegheny Rivers, but they mostly disappeared in the early 1900s due to poor water quality and habitat loss.  As water quality has improved, the PFBC began stocking Blue Catfish five years ago (2022) with hopes of restoring the once popular fishery to its native range.  While Blue Catfish are native to the Ohio River basin in western Pennsylvania, they are considered invasive in other parts of the state, and it is illegal to move the fish outside of their native range.  The PFBC’s Blue Catfish restoration plan is set to last 15 years, with the fish being distributed to new parts of the Three Rivers every five years.  In 2026, more than 10,000 Blue Catfish will be raised at the PFBC’s Tionesta State Fish Hatchery in Forest County and stocked into the Three Rivers.  Today’s stockings happened at Point State Park in Pittsburgh and at the PFBC’s access in Kilbuck Township, Allegheny County.

The product contains egg, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label. FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers with allergies to egg products are aware that this product should not be consumed.

Ethel B. “Ellie” Lathrop, 82, of Smethport, formerly of Bradford, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Amaryllis Nursing and Rehab Center. 

Born on May 14, 1944, in Buffalo, NY, she was a daughter of the late Warren E. and Ada M. (Freythe) Berg.

Ellie was a 1961 graduate of the Griffin Institute in Springville NY. She attended the University of Buffalo and enrolled in the Nursing Program at the Rockland State Hospital. 

She worked as a clerk for the Martin Rouch Co. Ellie also worked in the Domestic Violence Department of the YWCA and was nominated for Volunteer of the year while there. She has worked at Gono’s Rest., Holiday House, the Warehouse, Lou’s Lounge, and the Vet’s Club.

Ellie was a member of and served as the Chaplain of the VFW Auxiliary. Was also an aux liars member of the Moose Club, Eagles Club, Marche Club, and the John Berg Memorial Post in Crosby.   

Surviving is one son, Sean A. (Laurie) Lathrop, of Port Allegany, nine grandchildren, Andrew Lathrop, Blaine Lathrop, Sean Lathrop, Jack Lathrop, Rebecca (Nate) Schwab, Allison (Nick) Marzo, Hannah Lathrop and Dustin Moran, two great grandchildren, Savannah Schwab and Brooke Schwab, one sister, Renee Meissner, of South Lima, NY,  and several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Shane E. Lathrop, who died November 22, 2010, and her twin brother, Ted W. Berg.

A Celebration of Ellie’s Life will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 4 pm at the VFW in Bradford with Tom Cochran, Biblical Minister, officiating, a reception will follow until 7 pm. 

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc.

Memorial contributions if desired may be made to American Cancer Society or the Francis Sherman Auxiliary of the VFW.

I’m a dreamer. I have high hopes, sometimes higher than I could ever achieve, but I don’t stop dreaming. I suppose I drive my children and grandchildren crazy because I’m off trying something new. My wife? Well, she’s just given up on me. She doesn’t like me running off to do something by myself, but she also knows that stopping me doesn’t work.

Johnsonburg, Pa.:  Jim Pennington, Jr., President of the Rolfe Beagle Club, announces that the Rolfe Beagle Club will once again offer its popular Coyote and Crow Hunt over ten days from September 3 thru September 12.  This is the 13^th Annual Fall Coyote and Crow Hunt covering the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

“We typically offer this hunt to cover the weekends before and after Labor Day so hunters have plenty of time over the ten days to go after coyotes or crows,” said Jim.   “We know that these two predators can do a lot of damage to farmers’ crops and livestock during this time frame,” finished Jim.

Registration for the hunt must be received or postmarked no later than Wednesday, 9/2.  All registrations must be received at the Rolfe Beagle Club, 1016 Long Level Road, Johnsonburg, PA 15845.  Registration must include a phone number or an email.  Questions may be addressed to wlhab9@gmail.com.

Richard W. Tompkins      “beloved husband, father, and grandfather”

DUKE CENTER, PA—Richard W. “Rick” Tompkins, 77, a lifelong resident of Duke Center, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 26, 2026, in the Olean General Hospital, Olean, NY.

Born on Wednesday, January 12, 1949 in Bradford, he was a son of Walter W. and Bernice M. Vaughn Tompkins.  On May 23, 1998 in Allegany, NY, he married Dawn M. Nickerson Mesler, who survives.

He was a graduate of Bradford High School.  Rick served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War.

Rick was employed by the US Postal Service as a postal carrier in Smethport for many years, walking his 10 mile route everyday, delivering to his many friends he made throughout the years.  He retired after many years of service.

He was a member of Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530 and a member of Eldred American Legion Post 887.  He enjoyed hunting with the boys.  His greatest love was his family.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 28 years, Dawn; five daughters, Lisa Knapp of Smethport, Amy Fox of Derrick City, Tonya Hauser of Duke Center, Jazmin (Tim) Sutton of Springville, NY, and Chantella Reed of Duke Center; four sons, Rick (Dawn) Mesler of Shinglehouse, Rod (Jamie) Mesler of Shinglehouse, Todd Mesler of Duke Center, and Jason Mesler of Friendship, NY; many grandchildren; a brother, William Tompkins of Erie; four nephews, Mark (Tammy) Tompkins, Brian (Maggie) Ruth, Mike Ruth, and Jay (Theresa) Bird; and a niece, Donna (Greg) Cunningham.

In addition to his parents, Rick was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Tompkins; two sisters, Sharon Bird and Marge Ruth; and a son-in-law, Zackary Hauser.

Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life on Sunday, August 9, 2026 at the Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530, 1364 SR 44 S, Shinglehouse, from 1pm to 4pm. Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord military honors at 3pm at the Legion on August 9, 2026.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Rick’s name may be made to the Sons of the American Legion Post 530, 1364 SR 44S, Shinglehouse, PA 16748.

Rick’s family has entrusted his care and cremation arrangements to Kevin J. Dusenbury, Funeral Director/Owner of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.
