Losing Connie Clery: Over the summer, the nation lost a dedicated advocate for improving the safety of American college students, Connie Clery. After her 19-year-old daughter Jeanne was senselessly raped and murdered on a Pennsylvania college campus in 1986, Connie Clery became a champion for campus safety. Her advocacy led to the passage of the Clery Act, which requires colleges to disclose their campus safety policies and information about crimes that occur on and near their campuses. September is National Campus Safety Awareness Month, and I introduced a bipartisan resolution this week to honor the life and legacy of Connie Clery. She took her family’s tragedy and transformed it into a national movement to make college campuses safer, and Connie Clery’s vision and legacy will live on through the work of the Clery Center.
