MaryKay R. Frye, 81, of Smethport, PA passed away Tuesday (April 18, 2023) at Sena Kean Manor, Smethport.
She was born October 8, 1941 in Johnstown, PA the daughter of Thomas and Mary (McGee) Read. On June 13, 1962, in Elkton, Maryland, she married Donald P. Frye, who survives.
MaryKay graduated from Altoona Catholic High School. She then went to nursing training school in Chestnut Hill, PA and from there, anesthesia school, graduating from Duke University in 1991.
Mrs. Frye was a registered nurse anesthetist. Her last employment was at Williamsport Hospital, now UPMC-Williamsport, PA.
She was the love of my dad’s life and stood together with him in partnership and loyalty. They spent years traveling and going on cruises. She lived her life with a determination to succeed and offered loving support for her husband, child and grandchildren. She will be forever missed and remembered by our family.

Brothers: Paul Alexander Read of Raleigh, NC, William “Bill” Read of Slidell, LA
Step Sisters: Emily Frazier of Irwin, PA, Leora Miller of Hooversville, PA and Donna Jean Sambol
Step brother: Phillip Read of Hooversville, PA
And several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and one step brother.
In keeping with MaryKay’s wishes, there will be no visitation or services. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Smethport.

PUC Seeks Public Comment on Revised Settlement with Columbia Gas Concerning Washington County House Explosion

2019 Incident Destroyed a Home in Washington, Pennsylvania
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to seek public comment on a proposed revised settlement regarding a natural gas explosion that destroyed a house in the City of Washington, Pennsylvania, in July 2019 – injuring several people and damaging other nearby homes. The incident occurred as construction work was underway nearby on a Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania (Columbia Gas) project involving gas mains in the area.
The Commission voted 5-0 to seek comment from interested parties regarding the revised joint settlement presented by Columbia Gas and the PUC’s independent Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement (I&E). The proposed settlement will be published in the Pennsylvania Bulletin, and that publication will begin a 25-day comment period.

DCNR Advising Caution as High Danger of Woodland Fire Risk Increases
 DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn is urging Pennsylvanians be mindful of high woodland fire danger as seasonal wildfire risk increases. “Dry conditions across the Commonwealth have led to elevated risks for fires to spread this year,” Dunn said. “We know that a simple act of carelessness when lighting a camp or bonfire could prove disastrous among tinder-dry conditions in some of our forests. Wildfire dangers climb with each day of sun and wind, and we encourage Pennsylvanians to be cautious when lighting fires during these conditions. ”Thousands of acres of state and private woodlands are burned by wildfires each year. Debris burning, equipment use, power lines, and campfires are some of the most common causes of wildfires in Pennsylvania. Light rainfall in many areas, lack of green foliage in the spring, low humidity, and sunny and windy days all combine to increase chances of forest and brush fires spreading. Such fires are almost always traced to human carelessness. “We want to remind people to be careful with campfires and backyard burning so that they can take the proper precautions at all times,” State Forester Ellen Shultzabarger said. “It can help save lives, protect wildlife habitats, and reduce the strain on our hardworking firefighters.”Shultzabarger noted an increase in unmanned aircraft systems, or drones, near the scenes of wildfires, which must follow specific guidelines when flying over public lands, including remaining clear of wildfires. Housing Preservation Grant – Notice of Solicitation of Applications
The Fiscal Year 2023 Section 533 Housing Preservation Grant (HPG) Notice of Funding Availability was published in the Federal Register on April 19, 2023.
The HPG program provides grants to qualified organizations to repair or rehabilitate homes, rental properties or co-ops occupied by low- and very-low-income residents in rural areas. Eligible applicants are organizations which include most State or local governmental entities, federally recognized Indian tribes, nonprofit, and faith-based organizations.
In addition to regular program funding, $2,500,000 was made available under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 to help people repair homes they own or rent that were damaged by a Presidentially declared disaster in calendar year 2022.
- Properties proposed for repair must have sustained damage in a Presidentially declared disaster in calendar year 2022. A list maintained by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is available at this link: FEMA Website. In the dropdown boxes on that webpage, select the year 2022, and then choose “Major Disaster Declaration” or “Fire Management Assistance Declaration” as the declaration type.
- A maximum award of $50,000

A combination of dry and breezy conditions this afternoon will
create an elevated risk of wildfire spread across all of Central
Pennsylvania.
Minimum relative humidity values this afternoon will range from
20 to 30 percent. Wind gusts should be generally 15 mph or less
today, which would limit the potential for rapid spread of any
wildfires that develop on flatter terrain.
The greatest threat for more rapid spread today will be on the
steeper, south-facing slopes of the ridges. These locations will
experience the greatest warming and drying of fuels and leaf
litter from the most direct sunshine and exposure to the southerly
breeze.
Residents are urged to exercise caution if handling any potential
ignition sources, such as machinery, cigarettes, or matches. If
dry grasses and tree litter begin to burn, the fire will have the
potential to spread rapidly.
The threat for more rapid wildfire spread appears to increase on
Friday as the south to southwest breeze freshens by 5 to 10 mph.

USDA Announces Funding Availability to Expand Meat and Poultry Processing Options for Underserved Producers and Tribal Communities
Up to $125 million through two grant programs will increase choices for producers, including new capacity for indigenous meat processing to support tribal food systems
WASHINGTON, April 19, 2023 – Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the availability of up to $125 million through two new grant programs that will create more options for meat and poultry farmers by investing in independent, local meat and poultry processing projects that increase competition and enhance the resiliency of the food supply chain.
These new grant programs, the Indigenous Animals Harvesting and Meat Processing Grant Program and the Local Meat Capacity Grant Program, are part of the broader $1 billion American Rescue Plan investment by the Biden-Harris Administration to expand processing capacity for small and midsized meat and poultry processors.
“This is the latest step in USDA’s transformational work to fill gaps and help small and underserved producers market their products, support thriving local and regional food systems by investing in processing capacity that’s closer to farms, and alleviate major bottlenecks in food and agricultural supply chains,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “Importantly, we’re also taking steps to increase the overall availability of protein from indigenous animals like bison, reindeer and salmon, which have been the backbone of tribal food systems for generations.”
