Deborah A. Frick, 72, of Alexandria, VA, passed away June 16, 2023, at the Emilia Assisted Living Home, in Springfield, VA.
Born on December 5, 1950, in Bradford, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Gladys (Ausel) Frick.
She was a graduate of Bradford Area High School class of 1968. She attended Business School in Newcastle.

Lois A. Kellogg, 86, of Shinglehouse, PA went to be the Lord, with her loving family by her side, on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, in the Olean General Hospital, Olean, N.Y., after a short illness.
Lois was born on Saturday, June 19, 1937 in Presque Isle, Maine.
She completed her high school education at Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio. Before moving to Shinglehouse, approximately 38 years ago, Lois was employed as a surgical assistant at Defiance Hospital in Defiance.

ATV, Snowmobile Grant Program Taking Applications  The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Recreation and Conservation recently announced it is accepting applications for the All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and Snowmobile Program’s fall grant round. The program awards grants from the ATV and Snowmobile Management Restricted Accounts for projects proposing land acquisition, planning, development, rehabilitation, maintenance, equipment purchase or educational programs for ATV or snowmobile trails and facilities. Eligible applicants include for-profit organizations, nonprofit organizations and municipalities in the Commonwealth. Attention Farmers: Tax Credits Available to Support Water, Soil Quality Improvements  Pennsylvania farmers are encouraged to apply for a share of $13 million in tax credits available to support their efforts to improve soil health and water quality. The application period opens Monday, Aug. 7. Tax credits through Pennsylvania’s innovative conservation financing program, Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP), can be combined with other state funding to help pay for on-farm enhancements that protect the environment and boost farm sustainability. Tax credits are available to agricultural producers who implement best management practices or purchase equipment to reduce nutrient and sediment runoff, enhance soil health and improve the quality of Pennsylvania’s waterways. REAP applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Baseline eligibility includes compliance with the PA Clean Streams Law and the Pennsylvania Nutrient and Odor Management Law. Financial Relief Grants Available to Eligible Veterans  The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is reminding veterans who may be facing an unexpected financial hardship that help is available. The DMVA oversees the Veterans Temporary Assistance (VTA) program, which provides eligible Pennsylvania veterans and their beneficiaries with financial relief for life’s basic needs, including food, shelter, fuel and clothing. Eligible veterans or their beneficiaries can qualify for up to $1,600 in a 12-month period. Eligibility requirements include those who served in the Armed Forces of the United States (discharged under honorable conditions), died in service or killed in action, or suffered a service-connected disability. Kenneth C. Hultberg, 66, of 72 Rodgar Lane, Bradford, PA passed away unexpectedly, Monday, July 31, 2023, at his residence.

The Potter County Artisan Center in Coudersport is planning several classes over the next few weeks.
Artist, Laurie Angood, will teach a “Teen Artisans” (grades 7-12) class on Friday, August 11 from 3:00 – 4:30 pm. Students will complete a multi-media painting representing the night sky. Cost is $20. All materials are provided.
Basket-weaver, Catherine Snyder, will guide students to make a Toy Box or Waste Basket on Saturday, August 12 from 9:00-3:00 pm. Cost is $40.00 and includes natural and hand-dyed reeds in a range of colors. Wooden handles are optimal for an extra $3.00.
Artist, Laurie Angood, will teach an Adult Beginner Watercolor class on August 12 from 1:00-3:00 pm. Students will complete a ‘watercolor-on-wood block’ painting representing the night sky. Cost is $45.00. All materials, including wood blocks with attached watercolor paper, are provided.

Lumberjack favorites Arden Cogar Jr. and Mike Sullivan are bringing their Lumberjack Show of Champions to the main arena for the 71st Annual Woodsmen Show being held this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 4, 5 and 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Cherry Springs State Park in Potter County at 4639 Cherry Springs Road, Coudersport, PA 16915. The park is located about 12 miles from Galeton via West Branch Road and 15 miles from Coudersport via Route 44.
During their one-hour shows at 11:45 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4, Cogar and Sullivan will entertain the audience with humorous, informative demonstrations of the skills needed to be a lumberjack.
Contestants in Friday’s 2 p.m. hands-on amateur competition will get to rub elbows with these lumberjack champions as Cogar, Sullivan and DCNR staff assist amateurs competing in the two-person log roll, axe throw and two-person crosscut. Amateurs must be at least 13 years of age to compete; those 13 to 17 years old must have parental consent. Register for the contest Friday morning at the DCNR trailer and practice for the contest beginning at noon.
Visitors are encouraged to stick around to see who will win the overall lumberjack title during the professional competition on Saturday, Aug. 5 from noon to 3 p.m. As seen on television, the top lumber jacks and jills in the country will compete in eight different events, including log rolling, axe throw, springboard, tree felling, standing chop, hot chainsaw, one person buck crosscut and two-person buck crosscut.
Luann Sweigert, 67, of Coudersport, PA passed away peacefully, Wednesday morning, August 2, 2023 at her son Shannon’s home in Tower City.
Born in Lebanon, June 22, 1956, a daughter of the late Charles and Christine McConnell Whitman.
Luann was a retired custodian, working for Dauphin County. She had also worked for many years with the Harrisburg and Lebanon Humane Society, a job she truly loved.
She had a great passion for animals and enjoyed feeding the deer while living upstate.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Brad Whitman.
Surviving are her three children, William Sweigert III and his wife Michelina, Mechanicsburg, Shannon Sweigert and his wife Wendi, Tower City, and Tanetha Sweigert, Fredericksburg; four grandchildren, Travis, Hannah, Haylee, and Gabriella; one great granddaughter Geneva; siblings, Charles Whitman Jr. and his wife Suzanne, Myerstown, Dianna Dillen, Harrisburg, Barry Whitman and his wife Sandy, Coudersport, Tammy Landis and her fiancée Bennie Stuble, Lebanon, Sonya Long and her husband Ronald, Jonestown, Craig Whitman and his wife Courtney, Coudersport, and Forrest Whitman, Coudersport; many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday, August 5, 2023 at 11:00 AM from the First United Presbyterian Church, 402 N Main Street, Coudersport. A luncheon and time of fellowship will be held at Kaytee’s Family Restaurant and Marketplace, 251 US-6, Coudersport immediately following the service.

(MCKEAN COUNTY, Pennsylvania, August 2, 2023) District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer reports that, following a two day jury trial at the McKean County Courthouse, Phillip HAUN, Jr. of Eldred, was convicted of crimes committed against a minor child.
Witnesses testified that the investigation started after a 9 year old child reported to his teachers, a caseworker and a forensic interviewer that HAUN had pointed a gun at him and threatened to shoot him because the child had broken his glasses. The child described the firearm.
Trooper Neil Ginther, of the Pennsylvania State Police, investigated the case. He obtained a search warrant to search for the firearm the child described in HAUN’s residence and seized two firearms. He obtained a warrant for HAUN’s arrest.
Trooper Ginther and other members of the Pennsylvania State Police-Lewis Run barracks went to the residence to serve the warrants. A child inside the residence yelled “Police are here!” HAUN exited the residence onto a porch where the Officers were and they explained to him that they had an arrest warrant for him. HAUN attempted to avoid arrest and was taken to the ground by Officers and continued to conceal his hands and flail his legs to prevent Officers from taking him into custody.
District Attorney Vettenburg-Shaffer: “Pennsylvania law permits testimony from child victims to be presented differently than adults in some circumstances. Pennsylvania’s “Tender Years” statute permits the Commonwealth to present testimony from adult witnesses about reports the child has made. We utilized that statute here in addition to testimony by the child.”
Additionally, the Commonwealth sought permission to present the child’s testimony pursuant to a statute that permits testimony of children by way of “Contemporaneous Alternative Method” in certain cases where the child testifies in a room separate from the defendant and it is live-streamed into the courtroom. This permits the child to testify and answer questions by the District Attorney as well as the defense attorney with only the Judge and necessary court personnel present in a less-intimidating setting.
District Attorney Vettenburg-Shaffer: “Cases involving minor victims are the most difficult because they are often unable to articulate the details of what occurred. Testifying in a courtroom is intimidating for anybody but children are particularly impacted by testifying in such a format. This case highlights the importance of special evidentiary rules for child witnesses.”
Shaffer thanked the caseworkers, forensic interviewer, school teacher, and bus driver who all provided testimony of what occurred to the jury as well as the members of law enforcement who worked on the case.
HAUN was convicted of 2 counts of Endangering Welfare of a Child (Felony and Misdemeanor), Terroristic Threats (Misdemeanor), Simple Assault by Physical Menace (Misdemeanor), and Resisting Arrest. He was acquitted of Strangulation. Shaffer advised the Court that she would seek a deadly weapon enhancement at the time of sentencing.
A sentencing date has not been set.
8/1/2023-12:27:07 hours Wellsboro Fire Department was dispatched as part of a 2nd alarm response to Bloss Township for the report of a house fire with flames showing. Multiple callers reported the building well involved. Tanker 1-5 and Rescue 1-8 responded. Upon arrival crews worked in fire suppression activities. Upon assisting crews from Department 2 (Mansfield) with the removal of a roll up garage door. One puppy was located. Tenants of the residence reported that several other dogs were missing and presumed in the residence. A search was performed by Department 1,2 personnel while department 4 personnel continued with suppression operations.
Three adult dogs were located covered in soot and having significant respiratory distress. Later 5 other puppies would be located behind a dryer in the garage area and were evacuated outside to the tenants. Great work by all crews involved in yesterday’s incident!!!

Allen D. BERFIELD, 75, of Coudersport, PA, died Wednesday, August 2, 2023 in UPMC Williamsport.
Born April 4, 1948, in Conneaut, OH, he was the son of Cecil A. and Virginia B. Hall Berfield. On June 19, 1971, in Coudersport, he married Carolyn A. Potocek, who predeceased him on April 8, 2017.
A graduate of Coudersport High School, he attended Mansfield University for three years, majoring in biology. In high school, he was a member of the Coudersport rock ‘n roll band, Ollie and the Go Gos, with Larry Herbstritt, Carl Butler, Dennis Barnett, Charlie Cole, Tom Boyd, and David Anderson.
Allen was a natural engineer. At age 14, he turned his three speed English bicycle into a motorcycle using a centrifugal clutch.
A Vietnam War Veteran, he served honorably as a medic with the U.S. Army from 1971 – 1974. He was employed by the PA Liquor Control Board, managing the state store in Coudersport.
Allen and Carolyn owned and operated Carallen Traditional Stained Glass for 25 years. He was a member of the Susquehannock Trail Club. In recent years he played his guitar and sang for the residents of Sweden Valley Manor.
Surviving are: two children, Alan (Andreea) Berfield of Kirkland, WA and Larkan (Eric) Parker of Hooksett, NH; two grandsons, Aidan Berfield and Alexander Berfield; four siblings, Raymond (Rochelle) Berfield of Mineola, TX, Shirley Milchuk of Ridgway, Judy (Glenn) Bell of Doylesburg, and Roger Berfield of Angola, NY; nieces and nephews.
Cremation was at Olney-Foust Private Crematory.
A gathering to celebrate Allen’s life will be announced by Olney-Foust Funeral Homes & Crematory, Ulysses, PA.

Please be advised that Allegany County DPW will have daily road closures of County Road #24 between Swain Hill Road and Ames Nichols Road intersections from August 8 through August 9 for the purpose of replacing culvert pipes. Bradford, PA – At a luncheon on July 27, the Bradford Hospital Foundation awarded the Benjamin O. and Blanche M. Wentworth Endowed Nurse Scholarship Fund to a young aspiring nurse at the Bradford Club.
The foundation proudly presented the $1,000 scholarship to Faith Miller of Smethport, PA.
Miller is a recent graduate of Smethport High School and will continue her education this fall at St. Bonaventure University in Olean where she will study nursing. She was previously employed by the Pavilion at Bradford Regional Medical Center as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) where she received her certification last April 2022.
