Allegany County mourns the loss of former County Attorney Daniel Guiney and wishes to express sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dan. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dan’s wife Joan and the Guiney family.
Dan started his career in Allegany County in 1978 when he was appointed as Assistant County Attorney. He was appointed as a part-time Social Services Attorney effective January 1,1983, and appointed as full-time Social Services Attorney effective July 1, 1984.
Dan served in that position until he was appointed 1st Assistant County Attorney on January 1, 1991. Dan was then appointed County Attorney effective December 31, 1998, and served in that position until he retired on January 4, 2008.
During Dan’s 30 years of dedicated service to Allegany County, he was mentor, friend, and confidant to so many, and he provided the Legislative Board with sound legal advice and representation.

Maude was blessed by God with many talents and was a natural-born leader with the ability to confidently take charge with proficiency in many organizations and events. Jean Barbara English, a long-time resident of Derrick City, PA died peacefully at home on February 13, 2024 with her son, Ed Jr. at her side.
She was born on March 28, 1941 in Grove City to the late Emma and Sidney Beckwith.
She was married for 54 years to Edward English, Sr., who preceded her in death in 2012.
Jean will be remembered for her kind spirit, loving heart, grace, generosity and delicious dinners and homemade pies. That spirit is why we are so fortunate to have been in her life and to have been loved by her. She gave of herself with no hesitation – always humble and gracious with a twinkle in her eyes.
