BRADFORD, Pa. — What do you get for that friend who has everything? For Richard Esch, president of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, the answer was a scholarship.

                A group of anonymous friends have set up the President Richard T. Esch ’83 Scholarship at Pitt-Bradford in honor of the long-time leader and 1983 graduate. Even Esch does not know who the donors are.

                “I feel this is a real honor to have in my name as president,” Esch said. “I know how important financial aid is for our students. We hear it every day.”

Growing up, I lived across the street from an elderly couple, Ruth and Hugh Lee, and their brother Art. As a young boy, they seemed like the nicest people. My brothers, sisters, and I would often sit on their porch while they served us gingersnap cookies and milk. Those cookies were the best, and they still are my favorite today. As wonderful as they were, I felt sorry for them because, in my view, they were not going to heaven. You see, I was taught that anyone outside our belief system was far from God. I shared my concern for their well-being with my father, who assured me that God would make allowances for some, and because of their goodness, they would probably be granted entrance into heaven.

McKean County is seeking a qualified and highly motivated applicant to perform the duties of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at the County Jail. Based on candidate preference, this position can either be full or part-time.

Primary responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

1. Conduct patient assessments, perform physicals, order medications, and provide healthcare as required for all inmates at the County Jail.
2. Conduct blood draws, urine samples, pregnancy testing, and strep testing as necessary.
3. Maintain an accurate filing system to ensure consistency and accuracy of treatment programs and the reports prepared for the physician.
4. Train inmates and staff on health issues, such as medication dispensation and what to look for in each inmate’s condition.
5. Work independently, as well as under direction; make critical decisions, often in stressful situations.
6. Assure accurate filing systems and compliance with record keeping requirements.
7. Serve on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week as needed.
8. At times must fill in for Mental Health provider, giving guidance and counseling to inmates.
9. Assist in managing and tracking the inmate prescription process to ensure appropriate care and eliminate the chances of medications abuse.
10. Identify and develop patient care planning and monitor the plan.
11. Schedule medical testing with the County Physician and/or hospital personnel.
12. Conduct research for inmate medical records.
13. Take physician orders and transcribe them.
14. Assist with other such duties as may be assigned for the successful operation of the department.

Requirements for Candidates:

• Minimum requirement as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
• One-year experience with adults in a treatment setting.

Bradford, Pa.:  Two hunters on the Kinzua Quality Deer Cooperative (KQDC) won the two deer raffle cash prizes for bringing their deer into one of the two Deer Check Stations operated by the KQDC during Pennsylvania’s firearms deer season.  Each hunter that brought in an antlerless deer received one raffle ticket for the $500 antlerless deer raffle prize.  Hunters that brought in antlered deer received one raffle ticket for the $250 buck raffle prize.

Chris Houston of New Castle, Pa., won the buck raffle prize; he harvested an 8-point buck on the first Sunday that weighed 130# and brought his deer into the Marshburg Deer Check Station.  Chris harvested his buck in Buck Lick Run in WMU 2F in the KQDC on the Allegheny NF.

(MCKEAN COUNTY, Pennsylvania: December 9, 2025): District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer reports that McKean County law enforcement recently did a county-wide traffic detail to decrease DUIs and increase safety on roadways. The traffic detail occurred on Thanksgiving Eve and all police departments in the county participated.

Prior to the traffic detail, the officers and District Attorney met with the mother and sister of a victim who was killed in a DUI hit and run in 2015 as well as a Drug Recognition Expert to discuss the importance of curtailing impaired driving and legal topics.

Dennis “Denny” Forquer, 83, of Mt. Jewett—and formerly of Kushequa—passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 4, surrounded by love and care at Sena-Kean Manor. Born March 29, 1942 in Bradford to Lester and Florence (Transue) Forquer, Denny grew into a man celebrated for his patience, kindness, quiet strength.

On December 23, 1961, he married the love of his life, Linda (Blair) Forquer, in Kushequa. Their marriage was a true and enduring partnership—marked by devotion, resilience, and the kind of humor shared only by two people who have spent a lifetime loving one another.

Montoursville, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Highway Safety Network, Williamsport Area School District, the Williamsport High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club, and the Lycoming County Sheriff’s office held a media event today to highlight the dangers of impaired driving through the holiday season.

The safety partners teamed up for a traffic crash themed holiday tree, honoring those who lost their lives in impaired driving, teen driving, and overall crashes last year in Lycoming County.

Austin Area School will be operating on a 2 hour delay today, December 10th. Doors open at 10 AM.

Due to the predicted snow and varrying weather reports, the Coudersport Area School District is closed today, Wednesday, December 10th.

Alayna Mckervey is the Student of the Week for the week of December 8th. She is participating in the morning session of the Early Childhood Education program at the Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center. Alayna is a senior enrolled at Port Allegany High School.Upon graduation, Alayna plans to continue taking the necessary steps toward her long-term goal of opening her own daycare center. With her strong work ethic, passion for early childhood education, and leadership experience, she is well on her way to making that dream a reality.
