Ella Moses and Carson Neely were named Athletes of the Year at Port Allegany High School during the annual Awards Assembly held at the school last week.  Ella received the David Lacher Memorial Award/Female Athlete of the Year.  Ella participated in volleyball for four years, lettering all four years and was named an Northern Tier League All-Star three years in a row in grades 10, 11 and 12.   As a member of the Lady Gator basketball team for four years, Ella joined the 1,000 point club during her senior year, was named an NTL All-Star for three years and NTL MVP for two consecutive years, was named a Big 30 All-Star for three years and was named the Big 30 Player of the Year in 2025.  She was also selected as a District IX All-Star.  Ella has signed her commitment to the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford Women’s Basketball team.   She will be  pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Psychology.    Ella is the daughter of Chad and Jennifer Moses.  Carson received the Thomas Taylor Memorial Award/Male Athlete of the Year.  Carson is the son of Craig and Carra Neely.  He has been a wrestler for four years and during that time placed fourth, fifth and eighth in the state of Pennsylvania.  He was named a Big 30 All-Star two times for wrestling and the AML Wrestler of the Year.  He has served as captain for three years.  In football, Carson lettered four times, was a captain for two years, was named a YDL line of the year two times and is a two-time All-State Offensive lineman, two-time region lineman of the year and two-time Big 30 lineman of the year.  Carson will attend Clarion University to further his education and wrestling career.   

McKean County Finance Director

McKean County is seeking qualified and highly motivated applicants for a full-time Finance Director located in Smethport, Pennsylvania.

Under the direction of the County Commissioners, primary responsibilities of this position include: develops the County budget through projection of incoming revenues and expenses, ensures proper cash flow and appropriate expenditures, adjusts the budget as necessary, confirms maximum reimbursements have been received, ensures invoices and refunds are properly coded, as well as many other related duties.

Minimal Requirements:

• Associate’s degree in business.
• Bachelor’s degree in business management or accounting preferred.
• At least 5 years of experience in budgeting and general accounting.

Special Requirements:

• Ability to learn County software programs, operations, structure, and law as applicable to the position.
• Ability to implement public administration, and office management practice and procedures.
• Ability to gather, analyze, and interpret fiscal data; be able to project, estimate and forecast fiscal trends.
• Payroll knowledge preferred.

The Potter County Farmers Market will be outdoors AT OUR NEW LOCATION on the Courthouse grounds, at the corner and across the street from the square, every Friday (weather permitting) from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The next market will be this Friday, May 30th. Below is a list of who plans to be there and what they plan on bringing to the Market:

We’re back on our summer schedule of Friday markets, BUT AT OUR NEW LOCATION due to renovations on the square.  We’ll be across the street from the square, along the sidewalk to the right of the courthouse entrance, and around the corner on East Street to the driveway.

*  The outdoor market is held each Friday from May through October (weather permitting; on very rainy days, we will relocate into the Riley Gallery (if available)).  In November, the farmers market goes indoors for the winter market.

*  Market times have been established after many trial times over the years.  If you are not able to visit us and would like something particular from one of the vendors, please contact them directly.  They are willing to try to accommodate your request.

GRILLED HELLO will be attending this Friday’s farmers market, and we will be bringing grilled cheese. 

BLUE MARBLE FARM will hopefully be at the market with local, organically grown beautiful produce and plants.  For produce we will have Rhubarb, Lettuce and Radishes.   We will have garden vegetable plants and herb plants. We accept cash, checks and credit cards. CARD CREEK BAKERY  will be at the market May 30. Many bakery items may be weather dependent until I see the forecast closer to Friday. I am planning on a few of your favorite breads, sweet treats, jams, and fresh brown eggs.  I certainly am looking forward to milder temperatures and less rain for a few Fridays. The debate between Incumbent Mayor William J. Aiello and challenger Amy B. Sherburne will take place on June 11 at 7 p.m. in the Cutco Theater on the Cattaraugus County Campus of Jamestown Community College.

The League of Women Voters of Cattaraugus and Allegany Counties is sponsoring the debate in partnership with TAPinto Greater Olean.

CARE for Children, through its leadership of the Safe Kids Pennsylvania – McKean County Partnership, has successfully completed its 2025 Kindergarten Bicycle Safety Program, providing over 400 free bicycle helmets and bike safety education to Kindergarten students across McKean County and in Coudersport, PA.

With funding from a Safe Kids Pennsylvania mini-grant, the initiative delivered age-appropriate safety instruction in six local school districts: Bradford, Kane, Smethport, Port Allegany, Otto-Eldred, and Coudersport. Every child who participated received a properly fitted helmet, a helmet ID sticker, and bike safety materials for parents.

“Helmet use is the single most effective way to reduce head injuries and fatalities in bicycle crashes,” said Kimberly Engstrom, M.Ed., Child Safety Educator/ Preschool Director at CARE for Children. “According to Safe Kids Worldwide, proper helmet use can reduce the risk of head injury by at least 45%, yet less than half of children 14 and under wear one regularly.”

The CARE-led program featured the book Play It Safe by Mercer Mayer to teach the basics of bicycle safety, including helmet use, hand signals, and obeying traffic signs. The effort aimed to increase helmet usage and instill life-long safety habits.

Underclassmen awards were presented to students in grades 7 – 11 during the PAHS Awards Assembly.   The 7th grade Geography Award was presented to Jayden Parish; Student Handbook Cover Design also went to Jayden Parish; the Biology Award went to Mallory Johnson; The Bonnie Scholar Award from St. Bonaventure went to Micah Emerick, Alyssa Tanner, Jarrod Funk and Chloe Knauer; the Science Award given to an 11th grade student from Bausch & Lomb ( a medal and opportunity to compete for a University of Rochester Scholarship) went to Alex Schott; the Frederick Douglas and Susan B. Thomas Barnes wore many hats throughout his accomplished life.

A 1974 graduate of Portville Central School, Barnes devoted his life to education, community planning and regional development.

He held a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University, a Master of Business Administration degree from Cornell University and a Juris Doctor Degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He taught at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, Mercyhurst College, Ithaca College, Alfred State College and Alfred University.

Do you enjoy conflict? I don’t, and I’ve found that most people don’t either. I have met some who seem to thrive on it, but they are the exception. 

Conflict arises from disagreement. We all face it in our families, relationships, workplaces, and daily activities. It doesn’t have to be catastrophic unless we let it escalate, like the road rage incident I heard about on the news recently. A simple moment of conflict resulted in disastrous choices and one person’s death.

PennDOT to Reduce Part of Phoenix Road to One Lane Tomorrow

Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Potter County Maintenance Division announced it will reduce part of Route 1005 (Phoenix Road) in Pike Township to one lane tomorrow due a slide condition that has worsened during the early spring thaw and recent significant rainfall that has saturated the slope.

E. Anne Meehan, 95, of 10211 Regent Cir, Naples, FL, and formerly of Ridgway, PA, died on Friday, May 23, 2025.

She was born on July 27, 1929 in New Castle, PA, a daughter of the late Edward A. and Ellen C. (Lawler) Lynch.

On May 14, 1955, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Castle, she married Paul C. Meehan, who preceded her in death.

Stephen A. Winiarczyk, 91, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc.

JoAnn Dudash, 83, of 440 Eben Road, St. Marys, passed away with her family by her side, Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at Penn Highlands Elk.

She was born September 2, 1941, in Emeigh, PA, daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Buterbaugh Clark. She spent her childhood helping on a 150 acre dairy farm the family purchased in Westover, PA.
