St. Marys Area United Way Celebrates 100 Years of Community Impact
Centennial Milestone Highlights a Century of Service, Partnership, and Progress
Elk County, PA — The St. Marys Area United Way proudly celebrates its 100th anniversary, marking a century of dedication to strengthening the community and improving lives. Since its founding in 1925, the organization has been a driving force in mobilizing the caring power of the greater St. Marys area to support critical health, education, and financial stability initiatives.
“Reaching our 100th year is not just a celebration of the past — it’s a call to action for the future,” said Jim Ryan, President of the St. Marys Area United Way. “We are deeply grateful to the generations of volunteers, donors, and partner agencies who have made this legacy possible. Together, we’ve helped countless families thrive and our community grow stronger.”
Over the past century, the St. Marys Area United Way has raised and distributed millions of dollars to support local nonprofit agencies and programs, addressing the most pressing needs of the region. From emergency assistance and youth development to senior services and mental health support, the organization has served as a vital resource for individuals and families alike.
The St. Marys Area United Way continues to focus its fundraising efforts within the St. Marys Area School District region, which includes the communities of St. Marys, Force, Brynedale, Kersey, Weedville, Benezette Township, Fox Township, and Jay Township.
Founded in 1925 as the St. Marys Community Chest, the organization underwent two name changes over the years — first to the United Way of St. Marys and Benzinger Township, and finally to its current name, in 1983 to the St. Marys Area United Way. The original officers of the Community Chest included James A. Dippold (President), Mrs. Fred W. Lundin (Vice President), A.G. Geuder (Treasurer), and Miss Audrey Smith (Secretary). The first board of directors featured A.C. Kendal, H.S. Conrad, and Erie Shobert.
The St. Marys Area United Way conducts an annual fundraising campaign to support its mission of strengthening the community. The goal for the 2025 campaign is $200,000, with all funds raised to be distributed in the first quarter of 2026 to eligible nonprofit organizations serving the region.
