Wednesday, March 15 at 7 p.m. in the Coolidge Theatre at 104 Main Street in Wellsboro, the Deane Center’s History Comes Alive Series will continue with Jill Lawrence portraying Betsy Ross, the woman who designed and made the first American flag.
After the performance, the audience will be invited to ask Lawrence questions.
Betsy Ross was an American upholsterer who was credited by her relatives in 1870 with making the first official U.S. flag known as the Betsy Ross flag.
Most historians dismiss the story but Ross family tradition holds that General George Washington, commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and two members of a congressional committee—Robert Morris and George Ross—visited Mrs. Ross in 1776.
Mrs. Ross convinced George Washington to change the shape of the stars in a sketch of a flag he showed her from six-pointed to five-pointed by demonstrating that it was easier and speedier to cut the latter. There is no archival evidence or other recorded verbal tradition to substantiate the story of the first U.S. flag, which apparently surfaced in the writings of her grandson in the 1870s.
Ross made flags for the Pennsylvanian navy during the American Revolution. After the Revolution, she made U.S. flags for over 50 years, including 50 garrison flags for the U.S. Arsenal on the Schuylkill River during 1811.
George B. Duke, owner of Zippo Manufacturing Co., admires the latest panther statue at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. The new statue was carved from a tree that was removed to clear space for the construction of the George B. Duke Engineering and Information Technologies Building, which is named in Duke’s honor. The building is home to two new engineering technology programs as well as the university’s computer information systems and technology program. Carved in 2021 by Ridgway chainsaw artist Joe Dussia, the statue was the idea of Ron Orris, executive director of the Philo and Sarah Blaisdell Foundation in Bradford, which sponsored the carving. It now stands in the atrium of the Duke Building. Community members can see the panther and tour the building during its official dedication at 3 p.m. March 31. (Photo by Glenn Melvin)

March 11, 2023 — You all have something to be proud of, and we are blessed to be part of it all and call Bradford our home.
Those are the closing sentiments from the 2022 campaign as co-chairs Devon and Jeff Kloss would like to proudly announce that the “Rise to the Challenge” appeal has met its annual campaign goals for all three services areas: Bradford at $300,000, Port Allegany at $18,000 and Smethport at $10,000.
“At first glance, it may be easy to point out the problems in our community and focus on why one would not want to live here. But, a deeper examination of Bradford would reveal a society driven by the need to help others in any way it can. For example, the generosity shown during this year’s United Way campaign drive. Especially now, when many people are struggling financially, this community made it possible for the United Way to reach its campaign goal.
