Melanie Kemp, age 63, of Osceola, PA passed away at her home on Monday, June 12, 2023. 

Born September 26, 1959 in Wellsboro, she was the daughter of the late Marie (Zinck) Fry.  Melanie loved gambling, watching her favorite TV shows and taking care of her family. 

She is survived by her husband, Wallace Kemp; two daughters, Teresa (Lee) Wood of Osceola and Charity (Paul Hurler) VanOrsdale of Elkland; step children, Kim and Sam Kemp; grandchildren, Hayley Wilbur, Travis Flynn, Cameron Logan, Kasey Gardner and Danika Gardner; step grandchildren, Andy, Shelby and Nicholas Kemp, Quinton Wood and Victoria Rose; brothers, Jim (Nancy) Bennett and Alan Bennett and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her mother, Marie; step son, Shawn Kemp and son in law, Joe VanOrsdale. 

Family will receive friends at Kenyon Funeral Home, 214 W. Main St., Elkland on Thursday, June 15th from 12:00 – 2:00 PM.  A funeral service will be held immediately following at 2:00 PM with Rev. Larry O’Dell officiating.  Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Carolyn Mae Smith, age 93, of Knoxville, PA passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 10, 2023 surrounded by her loving family at UPMC Wellsboro. 

Born January 2, 1930 in Rome, NY, she was the daughter of the late Vernon and Vera (Reniff) Brown.  Carolyn married Carl Smith on May 16, 1954, they raised six children on their small farm in Westmoreland, NY and shared 56 years together until his passing in 2010.  She enjoyed crafts, gardening, canning and reading.  She was a member of the Butler Hill Baptist Church. 

Carolyn is survived by her children; Alan and Lisa Smith of Arlington, MA, Elaine and Bill O’Neil of Knoxville, PA, Eileen and Michael Adragna of Cheyenne, WY, Jeanette Laurens of Knoxville, PA, Joyce and Robert Arbaut of Corsage, France and Paul and Oana Smith of Dryden, NY; 19 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. 

She was preceded by her husband, Carl; son in law, Alain Laurens, two sisters and one brother. 

A memorial service will be held at the Butler Hill Baptist Church on Saturday, June 24th at 2:00 PM with her son in law, Rev. William O’Neil officiating.  Graveside service and burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Rome, NY on September 30th.

On June 7, 2023 the community of Bradford, in particular the children of Bradford, lost a champion. Elizabeth M Costello, Betsy joined her beloved father Patrick J Costello Jr. and cherished brother Danial J Costello in the last stop in the journey of life. 

Betsy began her vocation of working with children very young in life.  At the age of 7 her youngest sister Marie A Costello was born.  Betsy later introduced her as “My first baby that I taught to speak.”   Her babysitting career started at the age of 12.  She was highly sought after during her high school years at Bradford Central Christian.  So, by 1973 when Betsy graduated, she knew what she wanted to do, Speech Pathology with children.  Off to Owensboro Kentucky to attend Brescia College where Betsy graduated Cum Laude.  Leaving the heat of the South, Betsy then set her sights in the North and attended The University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point. Betsy achieved her Masters of Communication Disorders and Sciences.                       . 

Back in Bradford Betsy opened a preschool and began working with both adults and children as a traveling speech pathologist in Elk, Cameron and McKean Counties.  Betsy later started her career at the Visiting Nurses of McKean County under the umbrella of Bradford Hospital. She began as a therapist and ended her career as the Executive Director.  Once again, her true self heard the calling to go back to her first love, helping children. 

Betsy left the VNA and started her business contract with Early Intervention to work with Birth to 3-year-olds.  Her kids, as they were lovingly referred to, cover 3 counties. She spent countless hours with thousands of children and their families.  Using a wholistic approach Betsy got everyone involved on the sessions.  Whether they were baking cookies, going to the duck pond or counting blocks the family were there, involved, learning.  She offered support, guidance and love to Her Parents, especially Her Mothers.

Family meant everything to Betsy and she loved her nieces and nephews.  It was one of her greatest pleasures in life to watch their families grow.  Her niece Alliyson Feldmann, her husband Andy and their children Ysabella and Drew were extremely close to Aunt Betsy. They were given the gift of time with her as Betsy would stay with them for weeks at a time during the year.

Service was Betsy’s legacy which she inspired in everyone she touched.  She served many years on the United Way of the Bradford Area Board of Directors including serving as Vice President, and then President.  You can thank Betsy for their annual Pig Roast Clam Bake. She not only Chaired the event she was The Chef for 20 years.  One of the many reasons she was the 2006 Red Feather recipient.  Her work continued as she became very active through her practice with CARE for Children an she received the Making The Difference Award in 2010.  Betsy’s last great act of service for our community was being one of the founders of the Save our Hospital movement.  She will be watching over us to make sure we accomplish our mission.

As much as Betsy loved her home she loved to travel.  She made it to 47 states and several countries, but her favorite trip was returning to our father’s roots; County Mayo, Ireland.  Betsy grew our family ties with our cousins. They communicated on a weekly basis.  It is because of this we are holding an Irish Wake for Betsy from 1:00 to 4:00 PM on Saturday June 17, 2023 in the Community Room at Grace Lutheran Church on Mechanic Street.  This is a celebration of her life.  Be prepared to share a story.  We hope to meet some of Her Kids there.

Michael John DeStefano, 81, of 31 Metoxet Street, Ridgway, PA died on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at his home with his loving family at his side after a long illness.

He was born on April 29, 1942, a son of the late Michael Paul and Helen Del Pozzo DeStefano. He was the fifth of six children born to the DeStefano family.

In 1963, in Dayton, OH, he married Mary Lee Swift. In 1964, his first son Michael Lee arrived, and his second son, Christopher Adam was born in 1968.

Michael attended St. Leo’s School all 12 grades and was in the last class to graduate before the went to just 8^th grade. He then obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton, OH and a master’s degree of social work from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966.

Michael came back to his hometown in 1966 and went to work for Ridgway Psychiatric Center, later named Dickinson Mental Health, where he worked happily for 46 years. He received the Sis Simon award in 2002 for excellence of service and in 2008; he received the NASW Northwest PA Social Worker of the year award in Edinboro, PA with many social workers from the area in attendance. Michael was a member of the social workers board of PA for 8 years and President for 2 years. Michael loved his work and was dedicated to the people of Elk County.

Michael and Mary Lee were happily married for 58 years. They loved traveling to the Caribbean and entertaining their family and friends. Michael was one of the first members of the Footlighters and performed in several shows before and after his return to Ridgway. He had a unique sense of humor and was a clever conversationalist. He was also a great piano player and he and Mary Lee enjoyed playing and singing at social gatherings. Michael was an avid Steelers fan and enjoyed watching the games with his sons.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lee, 2 sons; Mike and his wife Julie DeStefano of Troy, OH, and Chris DeStefano and his partner Cheryl Oknefski of Lake City, PA, 2 granddaughters; Jessica (Luke) Sideras of Huber Heights, OH, and Ashlynn Pettit of Huber Heights, OH. He is also survived by 3 sisters: Sister Lucille of the sisters of St. Joseph of Erie, Angela DeStefano of Ridgway, and Loretta Olson and her husband Bob of Hollidaysburg, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Susan DeStefano and Mary Jo Stephenson.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Michael John DeStefano will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at 11:00 AM at St. Leo Catholic Church, 111 Depot Street, Ridgway, PA 15853, with Fr. Justin P. Pino officiating.

Burial will follow at St. Leo Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 14, at Krise Funeral Home from 2:00 PM until 4:00PM.

Judy E. Hanes, 77, passed away on unexpectedly on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at Penn Highlands DuBois.

She was born on July 21, 1945 in DuBois, a daughter of the late George and Anna Hauck Reasinger.
On October 30, 1982, in Emporium, she married Richard “Coco” Hanes, who survives. Together they shared more than 41 years of marriage.

Judy was a lifelong resident of the area and graduate of DuBois High School. She enjoyed watching Nascar, and was always a fan of Bill Elliott. She also loved visiting Rosie’s Hilltop Diner for meals with her husband.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children; Lisa Fuenffinger of St. Marys, Todd (Chris) Reasinger of CA, Dan (Lisa) Cuneo of OH, Melissa (Jim) McAninch of DuBois; as well as by numerous grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Judy was preceded in death by a grandson; Justin Anthony Hanes and by numerous siblings.

A Memorial Service for Judy E. Hanes will be held on Monday, June 19, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Lynch-Green Funeral Home.

Edward John MURPHY, 64, of Coudersport, PA, died Friday, June 9, 2023 in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport.  

Born August 8, 1958, in Bristol, he was the son of Joseph M. and Lorna M. Holland Murphy, Sr.  He was employed by a blacktop company in Bensalem, a safe moving company in New Jersey, and most recently as a custodian by American Legion Potter Post #192 in Coudersport.  Ed was a member of the Sons of the American Legion in Coudersport.  

Surviving are:  his wife, Darlene A. Murphy;  six children including, Jennifer A. Post and Edward J. Post, both of St. Marys;  five grandchildren;  two sisters, Catherine “Kay” J. (George C.) Lee of Genesee and Lorna M. Robinson of Coudersport;  two brothers, Michael T. (Sharon) Murphy of Oakford and Joseph M. (Peggy) Murphy, Jr. of Conneautville;  nieces and nephews.  

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, James P. Murphy;  a nephew, George J. Lee;  and a brother-in-law, Jack L. Robinson.  

Services will be private.

William Howard Wilson, Jr., 71, of Tioga, PA passed away Sunday June 11, 2023, at UPMC Harrisburg. 

He was born August 27, 1951, in Blossburg, PA, to William Howard and Ruth Marie (Casher) Wilson.  He graduated from Wellsboro Senior High School and served his country in the US Navy.  Following his military service, William returned to the area and worked as an electrician at Corning Glass. 

After retiring from Corning Glass, William enrolled in Mansfield University and earned a bachelor’s degree in finance.  William was a member of the Mansfield Library Libraries Book of the Month Club, he loved to garden, was an avid reader and was devoted to his pets:  his dog “Queenie” and his cat “Garfield”.

William is survived by his five brothers:  Larry Wayne Wilson (Faye) of Elmira, NY, Roger Erwin Wilson (Billie) of Tioga, Ronald Lee Wilson (Elizabeth) of Waterford, PA, James M. Wilson of Tioga, Robert A. Wilson (Tammie) of Tioga; a sister:  Sheila J. Dean (Roger) of Tioga; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother:  Frederick Reed Wilson.

Cory Daniel Ganoe, 35, of Port Allegany, PA died unexpectedly Saturday (June 10, 2023).

He was born August 8, 1987 in Harrisburg, PA, a son of Rickey Bender and Debra Ganoe.

Cory graduated from Keystone High School and worked at Eddie’s on Main in Port Allegany.

He loved music and photography.

Linda D. Shaffer, 66, of Port Allegany, PA passed away Sunday (June 11, 2023) at her residence.

She was born November 18, 1956 in Port Allegany, the daughter of Rex B. and Doris (Higgins) Galentine.

Linda worked as a custodian for the Coudersport School District.

She loved playing Bingo, going to the Casino, spending time with her family and shopping.

Suzanne L. Harris, of 8748 County Road 1, Friendship, NY passed away Sunday (May 28, 2023) at her daughter’s house on Maple Street in Cuba, surrounded by her loving family.

Suzy was born Aug. 25, 1950, in Dubois, Pa., and was the daughter of Merle and Elvita Patricia Solia Katz. On July 8, 2000, in Friendship, she married her husband of 22 years, Lytle “Gene” Harris, who survives.

Suzy was a 1968 graduate of St. Agnes High School in Rochester. She worked for the U.S. Post Office in Bolivar as a rural route mail deliverer.

Suzy was a strong, kind and generous soul. She loved her family fiercely and worked tirelessly to take care of all of them. Suzy loved her pets and enjoyed cooking. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Along with her husband, Gene, Suzy is survived by her mother, Elvita Patricia Katz of Rochester; three children, Joseph M. (Jennifer) Ennis of Little Genesee, Charles D. (Lisa) Ennis of West Clarksville and Patricia S. Linderman of Cuba; six grandchildren, Logan, Bryce, Shelby, Kasey, CJ and Jacob; a great-granddaughter, Liv; and two stepchildren, Kim (Josh) Hoffman of Virginia and Shawn Harris of Florida.

Suzy was predeceased by her father, Merle Katz.

At Suzy’s request, there will be no services.

SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa.—Shinglehouse, Pennsylvania mourns the loss of a remarkable individual, Patricia A. “Pat” Howard, who departed from this world on Sunday, June 11, 2023. Pat, known to her loved ones as a devoted mother, cherished friend, and compassionate community member, left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Born on April 25, 1931, in Olean, NY, Pat was the daughter of Lawrence and Byrdena Foote Washburn. Growing up in the close-knit community of Shinglehouse, she developed a strong sense of community values, which she carried with her throughout her life.

Following her graduation from Shinglehouse High School in 1949, Pat embarked on a career dedicated to serving others. She found her true calling in healthcare and worked tirelessly as a registered nurse for over four decades. Pat’s innate compassion and unwavering commitment to patient care earned her the respect and admiration of both colleagues and patients alike. Her kind and gentle nature brought comfort to countless individuals during their most vulnerable moments.

Beyond her professional achievements, Pat was a dedicated member of the Shinglehouse community, actively involved in various organizations and charitable causes. She served as a loving and supportive Den Mother within the Cub Scouts, nurturing young minds and instilling values of leadership and camaraderie. Additionally, Pat contributed her time and efforts as a Mary Martha at the Methodist Church, embodying the principles of service and faith. She was also a valued member of Eureka Chapter #52 OES, exemplifying sisterhood, unity, and philanthropy. Pat’s unwavering commitment to these organizations and her community at large left an indelible impact, inspiring others to follow in her footsteps and make a difference in the lives of those around them.

Pat shared a loving and devoted partnership with her husband, Dewy Howard, for an incredible 70 years. Together, they built a life filled with love, shared dreams, and unwavering commitment. Their union was an inspiration to all who knew them, a testament to the power of love and resilience. Pat was also an adoring and steadfast mother to three boys; Scott, Mark and Eric.  Her unwavering support, encouragement, and unconditional love will forever be remembered by her children and husband.

In her leisure time, Pat enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. Pat enjoyed sewing, crafting, and traveling. She found joy in exploring serene lakesides and immersing herself in the diverse cultures of different countries from South Africa to the Bahamas. She was a lifelong learner, always seeking to expand her knowledge and challenge herself intellectually.

Patricia leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion. She is survived by her husband, Dewy Howard; her children, Scott (Lynette) Howard and Mark (Bev) Howard; her beloved five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; her siblings, Larry Washburn, Gary “Burt” Washburn and Roxy Shea; and a host of other relatives and friends who will carry her memory in their hearts.

In addition to her parents, Pat was predeceased by a son, Eric Howard; two sisters, Peggy Wood and Gloria Nichols.

A viewing service to honor Patricia’s life will be held at the Virgil L. Howard Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse on Wednesday, June 14,  2023, from 2-4pm and 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will commence at the funeral home on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at 11 am, with the Rev. Russell J. Horning, of Shinglehouse, officiating.  Burial will be in the Bell Run Cemetery, Shinglehouse.

Members of Eureka Chapter #52 OES will conduct a memorial service at 7:45pm on Wednesday in the funeral home.

In this time of grief, let us remember the light that Patricia A. Howard brought into our lives and find solace in the memories we shared with her. She will be missed for her kindness, laughter, and cheeky sense of humor. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her legacy continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she loved.

Michael W. Catalano, 70, of  Emporium, PA passed away at his residence, Emporium, PA on Saturday morning (June 10, 2023). He was born January 22, 1953 in St. Marys, PA a son of the late Romie and Rita Hornung Catalano.

Mike graduated, in 1971, from Cameron County High School and then two years later from Williamsport Area Technical School where he received an electrical degree. He retired from GKN where he worked for many years. He was very active with his kids lives and enjoyed time with his close friends. Mike got the most enjoyment from being involved with his children and grandchildren’s lives.

He is survived by daughter, Angela Catalano, Emporium; son, Israel Catalano (Stephanie), Mechanicsville, MD; son, Patrick Catalano (Alexandra), Emporium; son, Duncan Catalano, Erie; five grandchildren: Maximillian, Jenna, Taylor, Colson and Roman; a brother, Jeffrey Catalano, Clearfield; two sisters, Susan Catalano, Elizabethtown and Nancy Catalano Dill (Tim McGinnis), Emporium.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Romie and Rita Hornung Catalano.

Candi Ann Hendrickson, 40, of Central, Alaska, passed away unexpectedly on May 28, 2023.

Candi was born on Sept. 9, 1982, in Jacksonville, North Carolina, to Cathy Davis Gelvin and Paul Lewis Jr. She was a happy and easygoing baby.

Before Candi turned 5 the family moved back to Pennsylvania. When she was 8 years old her mom tossed her and her brother, Terry, into her car and drove to Alaska. Candi turned 9 years old on this trip to Alaska.

Her first five years of her Alaska adventure were spent in the Athabascan Native village of Ruby on the Yukon River. She had a happy and fun life there. After five years her mom moved her and her brother, Terry, to the gold mining town of Central, Alaska. Candi would spend the remainder of her life in Central.

It was in Central, Alaska, that Candi met the love of her life, Jacob Hendrickson. On Aug. 12, 2006, her brother Terry walked her down the aisle and she became Jake’s wife. Candi was extremely happy, and they raised a beautiful family together.

Candi was a wife, mother, daughter, sister, crafter, baker, homeschool teacher, cook and many other things. She enjoyed many talents in life.

Candi leaves behind her husband, Jacob Hendrickson, and three children, Jade, Skylar and Braydon Hendrickson, all of Central, Alaska; her mom and stepdad, Cathy and Stanley Gelvin of Central, Alaska; mother-in-law, Becky Hendrickson of Central, Alaska, brother, Terry Lewis of Central, Alaska; stepbrother, James Gelvin of Circle, Alaska; stepsister, Keri (Chris) Gelvin-Bowen and family of Fairbanks, Alaska; stepsister, Barbara (Kris) Rudek and family of Maple Grove, Minnesota; father and stepmother, Paul and Lori Lewis and their son Roy, of Addison, New York; brother-in-law, B.J. Hendrickson of Fairbanks, Alaska; brother-in-law, Joshua (Amber) Hendrickson and family of Fairbanks, Alaska; brother-in-law, John Hendrickson of Central, Alaska; sister-in-law, JoHanna (Nick) Missina and family of Fairbanks, Alaska; grandparents, Arnold and Nina Davis of Westfield, Pennsylvania; grandfather, Paul Lewis Sr. of Westfield, Pennsylvania; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Candi is preceded in death by her stillborn son; father-in-law, Jack Hendrickson Jr.; brothers-in-law, Jedediah and Josiah Hendrickson; sister-in-law, Cyndie Hendrickson; and grandmother, Donna Lewis.

Candi will be laid to rest in the Central cemetery with a private family gathering. Later this summer there will be a celebration of life in Central, Alaska. This date will be announced later.

Candi was a beautiful person and will be forever missed.

Leon T. Muroski, 88, of 405 Mill Street, Johnsonburg and formerly of Erie, PA, passed away Saturday June 10, 2023 at St. Vincent Hospital, Erie, PA.

He was born on September 22, 1934 in Johnsonburg a son to the late Wade J. and Anne M. Kazmierski Muroski. Leon was a 1952 graduate of Johnsonburg High School and he attended Gannon University for 2 years. He then graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 1956. 

After graduating college, Leon spent most of his life as an educator and administrator in Erie area. He had been the Pastor of Our Lady of the Lake Church in Edinboro for 14 years and was at St. Mark’s Seminary for 8 years and had been the Vocational Director there for 5 years. 

Leon was a member of Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, K of C in Erie and the Sierra Club in Erie where he had been the Chaplain for both clubs.

He is survived by brothers Philip C. Muroski of Johnsonburg, Thomas Muroski and his wife Mary Ellen of Johnsonburg, a sister-in law Jane Muroski of Parlin, NJ and numerous nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents, Leon is predeceased by a brother Kenneth Muroski, Sr. 

A Mass of Christian Burial for Leon T. Muroski will be conducted at Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg on Thursday June 15, 2023 at 10 AM with Fr. David Wilson, Pastor as celebrant. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery. Visitation will be private.
