TWO MOVIES ADDED TO PITT-BRADFORD’S 6OTH ANNIVERSARY FREE FILM SERIES
The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford has added two movies to its free 60th Anniversary Film Series.
Each of the films is free to the public and campus community and begins at 7 p.m. in the Bromeley Family Theater. Light refreshments will be provided.
The two added films are the Sidney Poitier classic, “To Sir, with Love,” on Dec. 9 and “Rise of the Wahine,” a documentary about a women’s college volleyball team in the early days of Title IX on March 23, 2024.
Paula Fritz Eddy Speaks At The Port Allegany Women’s Club
The Port Allegany Women’s Club held their November meeting at the Port Allegany Senior Center and welcomed guest speaker, Paula Fritz Eddy. Paula is the Executive Director of the McKean County Community Foundation. She spoke about the Joe DeMott Port Allegany Community Development Fund as well as the Women’s Giving Circle of McKean County.
The Club held their annual Ding-a-Ling Party at the Inn on Maple Street Annex located on Arnold Avenue in Port Allegany.
The Women’s Club has been busy organizing and preparing for Light Up Night which was held last week on the Town Square in Port Allegany. This weekend they will be on the Town Square again as sponsors of A Winter Wonderland. The club is also sponsoring a home Christmas decorating contest. Winners will be announced tomorrow (Saturday, December 9th) at the Winter Wonderland on the Town Square.
Oswayo Valley Elementary School New Book Vending Machine
Oswayo Valley Elementary School is thrilled to announce the launch of its brand-new book vending machine, adding a touch of magic to the world of learning. This fantastic initiative aims to elevate the joy of reading and foster literacy skills among our students, all made possible through the support of Title 1 funds.
Dubbed “Books, Behavior, and Beyond: Green Wave Incentive Program,” this groundbreaking endeavor is set to revolutionize the way students engage with literature. The mechanism is simple yet ingenious: students earn coveted Green Wave cards by achieving academic goals and demonstrating the principles of our Character Counts positive behavior reward system. These cards can then be exchanged for tokens at predefined milestones, allowing students from Pre-K to 5th grade to access the wonders of the book vending machine.
Today marked a historic moment as Tevlin Milliken, a trailblazing third-grader, became the very first token earner of the program. With an impressive tally of 15 Green Wave Cards, Tevlin proudly exchanged them for a gold token, unlocking the gateway to a world of page-turning adventures. His journey is just the first chapter in a narrative that promises countless students discovering and relishing books through the school’s state-of-the-art vending machine for years to come.
Port Allegany High School 2023 Winter Showcase
The 2023 Winter Showcase was held recently at Port Allegany High School in the Auditorium. Guest hosts for the evening were Lillianne Reed and Alayna Rhinehart. The hosts began the show with a guitar duet followed by recorder as they performed the Sponge Bob theme song. Love Story by Taylor Swift was then performed by the 8th and 9th Grade Choir with vocal music instructor Rachel Karwowski on piano. Lily Madison followed with When I was Your Man by Bruno Mars. Jenn Baxter performed an original composition, Days of Spring, on her saxophone. The Nights by Avicii was performed by Nathaniel Canfield and friends. Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd was performed by Owen Kisler, drums; Juuso Young, backup guitar; Isaac Barber, lead guitar; Miska Young, bass and Henry Troupe, vocals. Metallica’s Enter Sandman followed with Saxon Palmer, vocals, Owen Kisler, drums, Isaac Barber, guitar and Aidan Clark, bass guitar.
Ex’s and Oh’s by Elle King was sung by Georgia Barth and Delaney Stromberg, vocals and Miss Karwowski on piano.

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 8, 9 and 10, Christmas On Main Street will celebrate the rich history of Wellsboro’s production of Christmas ornaments made from the late 1930s to the late 1950s and beyond when the town was known as “The Glass Ornament Capital of the World.”

“Holiday Shorts & Sweets” is the first show the Hamilton-Gibson Women’s Project is performing as a Christmas on Main Street event.
The opening night performance is this Friday, Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Warehouse Theatre at 3 Central Avenue in Wellsboro with a reception and refreshments. The show will end this Saturday, Dec. 9 with a matinee at 2:30 p.m. and an evening performance at 7:30 p.m.
Farmers Market Saturday at Riley Building in Coudersport
Starting this week, the fall Potter County Farmers Market has moved back to the Riley Gallery, every Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. THE NEXT MARKET WILL BE THIS SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9TH. Below is a list of who plans to be there and what they plan on bringing to the Market:
* VENUE CHANGE: The fall/winter market has moved back to the Riley Galley, next to The Crittenden Hotel.
* The indoor fall market begins the first Saturday in November, from 10 am to 2 pm, until the week before Christmas. Then we change our schedule to the winter market, first Saturday each month of January, February, March, and April.
* Market times have been established after many trial times over the years. If you are not able to visit us and would like something particular from one of the vendors, please contact them directly. They are willing to try to accommodate your request.

Former Pennsylvania State Police Corporal Sentenced to 23 Years in Prison for Child Sexual Exploitation Offenses

PITTSBURGH – A former resident of Perryopolis, PA has been sentenced in federal court to a total term of 276 months’ imprisonment (23 years) on his conviction for seven counts of child sexual exploitation, including the production and attempted production of material depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor, possession of material depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor, and transportation and attempted transportation of material depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor, United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan announced today.
United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon ordered a period of 25 years’ supervised release following McKenzie’s incarceration sentence and ordered that McKenzie pay restitution totaling $61,000.00 to his minor victims.

At 1 p.m. this Saturday, Dec. 9, Kacy Hagan, a professional dance instructor, is giving a free swing dance lesson in the lobby at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts at 104 Main Street in Wellsboro.
At 7 p.m. Saturday night, Dec. 9, dance to swing music performed by the Starliters Big Band in the Deane Center’s Coolidge Theatre.
ATV/UTV RIDE INTO CHRISTMAS, SMETHPORT BOROUGH

Let’s spread some Christmas cheer to those folks who can’t get out and see the Christmas lights. Get those ATV AND UTV decked out and join our community in a fun night out on the town.
We will meet at the Willow Street side of the park. (by the pool). You can unload your trailers there. You may also do so at the Firehall parking lot. We will ride to Sena Kean and then down Willow St. past Lakeview. Come on out and enjoy the lights. Our ride will end at the Firehall with cookies, coffee and hot Chocolate.
If you would like to donate, please do, all donations will be split between the Food Bank and The Child Advocate Center. Spread that Christmas cheer throughout our town. This year we will give first, second and third prizes for best decorated and a prize for who came the longest distance. Get those machines decorated and join us on Saturday, December 16.
Pickett, Owlett Announce PA History Grants for Bradford, Tioga, Wyoming Counties
HARRISBURG – State grants to help in the continued preservation of local history were awarded to historical societies in Bradford, Tioga and Wyoming counties, according to Reps. Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Wyoming) and Clint Owlett (R-Tioga/Bradford).
The funding was made possible through the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC)’s Cultural and Historical Grant Program, which provides general operating support to museums and historical societies not directly supported by other state programs.
“The PHMC grants are really appreciated by the counties involved,” said Pickett. “Many people volunteer and work to create fundraisers for these organizations. Cultural and historical preservation is very important for the enjoyment of each of us, and also to leave legacies for future generations.”
“Our region is blessed with a rich history, and it is important to always remember and celebrate that,” Owlett said. “I am pleased to see these important investments here in the Northern Tier.”
The local PHMC grants are as follows:
- Bradford County Historical Society – $4,000.
- Tioga County Historical Society – $4,000.
- Wyoming County Historical Society – $4,000.
- Wyoming Historical and Geological Society – $4,000.
PHMC awarded nearly $2 million in support grants to 158 eligible museums and county historical societies in 58 counties using a formula based on a percentage of each organization’s annual operating budget.
Causer Announces Grants for WWII Museum, Historical Societies
HARRISBURG – Rep. Martin Causer (R-Cameron/McKean/Potter) today announced $12,000 in state grants have been awarded to three area organizations by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC).
The Eldred World War II Museum, as well as the Cameron County Historical Society and McKean County Historical Society, each were awarded $4,000 through the Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program.
“Our historical societies play a valuable role in preserving and teaching about local history, and the Eldred World War II Museum is an outstanding asset to our region, preserving the history of World War II and highlighting the role the community of Eldred played in supporting the war,” Causer said. “I was glad to support this important investment in these organizations.”

Gary Edward FANTON, 80, of Cabot, PA, formerly of Wellsville, NY, died Wednesday, December 6, 2023 in Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Butler, PA.
Born October 17, 1943, in Wellsville, he was the son of Lyle V. and Lucille M. Flynn Fanton. A graduate of Wellsville Central School and Alfred State College graduate, he served honorably with the U.S. Army from 1965—1968. He was stationed at Ahn Khe, Vietnam with the 1st Air Cavalry Division from July 1966—July 1967.
On June 4, 1966, in Hallsport, NY, he married the former Gloria J. Smith, who survives.
Gary was employed by National Fuel in Wellsville as a serviceman and regulator technician for 38 years, retiring in 2003. He was a member of Morrison Hayes American Legion Post #702 in Wellsville and past assessor for the Towns of Willing, Independence, Alma, and Wellsville.
Gary was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be remembered for his sense of humor and sense of responsibility to always lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Smethport Borough Celebrates Long Time Employees Retirement

We are close to closing a very special chapter for us. Today all of our employees came together to surprise our one and only Charlie Jones with a much-deserved retirement party! Charlie started with the Boro in 1984 or as he will tell you 39 years 1 month and 26 days ago.
Charlie has been one of those employees who never cared if it had to do with water, sewer, or electric if you called for help he was one of the first ones out. When the snow started falling he would automatically be at the Sheds getting trucks running and loaded. The stories we could all tell about him or the thank yous that we owe him are far longer than Facebook will allow us to post. So Charlie we thank you for everything over the last 39 years.
We also need to thank Bill Gallup for his craftsmanship and building the light for Charlie.
We also celebrated the retirement of Tom Coldren, Tom came to us part time all the way back in 2015. He has been an important part of the team since we gave him a key, Tom has worked in the park, plowed snow, run equipment (we’re still trying to find something he can’t operate) and done literally every task that we could think of. Tom has been another employee that has been one of the first out and never cared who was calling the standard response has always been “I’ll be right there”
Both of these guys have been an important part of our success over the years. Selfless dedication to the job and the needs of the public is what they have shown all of us and we are forever grateful that we have had the privilege to work alongside you.
Last but not least we want to thank Mayor Wayne Foltz who provided today’s meal for the party, and also all the members of Borough Council who came today to thank Charlie and Tom for everything they have done.
