Dickinson Sets Building Campaign Goal for St. Marys

RIDGWAY, Pa (March 5, 2024)— Dickinson Center, Inc. (DCI), an affiliate of Journey Health System, plans to start building their two-story, 12,000-square-foot facility within the lots along Railroad and Market streets, after delays due to the pandemic and evolving building plans. The integration of DCI’s St. Marys’ programs into the new building will not only improve service accessibility, but also increase organizational effectiveness while bringing a positive transformation to downtown St. Marys.

CRCF Community Fund Grant Applications Due April 15

OLEAN, N.Y., March 5, 2024 — The Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation’s Community Fund grant application process is open, with grant applications due April 15.

The Community Fund makes possible two rounds of annual funding, one in May and one in November, for unrestricted grants intended to support nonprofit projects and initiatives that respond to the changing needs of the community.

Applicants must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations or a government entity or school district.

Daniel K. “Mack” Lechner, 82, of St. Marys, PA

Daniel K. “Mack” Lechner, 82, of St. Marys, PA passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, March 8, 2024.

He was born on June 5, 1941 in St. Marys, PA, a son of the late William and Sophie Barbarich Lechner.

On November 25, 1961, at Queen of the World Church, he married Carol Nussbaum, who survives. Together they shared more than 62 years of love, laughter, and marriage.

Mack was a 1959 graduate of Elk County Catholic High School. He went on to retire from Keystone Thermometrics after many years of service. He was a member of the St. Marys Moose, and in his free time enjoyed playing cards and going on trips to Salamanca. Mack excelled at bowling and was the city singles champ at one time. He could often be found telling jokes and making people laugh, or spending time on his porch taking care of flowers and watching hummingbirds. His family was the highlight of his life, he loved spending time with his grandkids and great-grandkids, and going for car rides with his loving wife.

Gloria J. Vecellio, 87, of W. Irvine Street, Lewis Run, PA passed away peacefully at home in her sleep on Friday, March 8, 2024, at her residence.

Born August 6, 1936, in Crosby, she was a daughter of the late Albin and Ida (Frigo) Faes. She attended school in Crosby and graduated from Smethport High School.

On August 4, 1956 in Smethport, she married Clayton V. Vecellio, who survives.

Gloria was employed at Allegheny Bradford Corporation.

COUDERSPORT, Pa. – Roxanna “Roxy” Dwyer, 82, a lifelong resident of Coudersport, passed on Thursday, March 7, 2024,  at UPMC Cole Place, Coudersport, after a lengthy illness.

Family and friends may call on Thursday, March 14, 2024,  from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the gathering space at St. Eulalia Catholic Church, Coudersport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Christopher Wheeler, pastor, as celebrant.

Roxy’s family has entrusted her care to Kevin J. Dusenbury, funeral director/owner of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.

Cold air moving in across the Great Lakes will generate numerous
snow bands and some dangerous snow squalls.

Use extra caution if you must travel into a snow squall, slow
down and consider exiting the highway. Rapid changes in visibility
and potentially slick roads may lead to accidents.

As the temperature will be near freezing all day today, any small
drop in temperature may cause a flash freeze where black ice will
form on roadways. Black ice is nearly impossible to see as the
road may appear to be only wet. Please use extreme caution,
especially on bridges, overpasses and around curves. Allow plenty
of stopping distance and avoid braking suddenly.

Clinton County Upgrades to Prepared 911 Calling

Clinton County Department of Emergency Services

The Clinton County Department of Emergency recently deployed state-of-the-art technology to improve services through a program called Prepared 911, which provides a variety of digital tools to bring enhanced situational awareness during emergencies.

One of the main features is the use of livestreaming technology, when a person calls 911, dispatchers at CCDES are now able to send a link that offers the caller the choice to opt in to allow live video to be sent from their device directly to the dispatcher. With the additional visual information, police, firefighters, and emergency medical services (EMS) can make more confident, better-informed decisions.

Senators Questioning Leads To Cancellation of Agreement

My questioning, along with my colleague Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill, of the Game Commission last week for their hiring of former Senator Scarnati’s firm at $10,000/month has resulted in the termination of the agreement. The video of my questioning of the Executive Director on this issue can be seen in a post from last week.

Lately some folks have commented on my being direct in my questioning of Department heads. Some others have remarked that what I’m doing won’t make a difference. It’s true that a lot of times things move slowly in government but sometimes direct questions lead to direct results.

Penn College Spotlight on Sports (March 10)

Pennsylvania College of Technology’s baseball and softball teams combined for nine wins and seven losses during spring break play in South Carolina over the past week, while the men’s lacrosse squad split in its two outings. This coming Saturday, the men’s and women’s tennis teams begin their spring season.

BASEBALL

In a Monday twin bill against Eastern Nazarene College, Dallas Griess of Williamsport went yard twice and doubled, finishing with three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored in a 7-2 first-game win. Starting pitcher Jonas McGrath of Ashland got the win as he fanned eight in four innings of work. The Wildcats also won the second game, 7-4, getting a three-run homer from Adam Aldenderfer of Trout Run and a solo shot from Quinn Hanafin of Sayre to back starting pitcher Ryan Sawyer of Cornwall, New York, who earned the “W.”
