St. Marys, PA – The St. Marys Area United Way recently received a generous $1,500 donation from Stifel O’Leary Piccolo Launer and Fledderman Wealth Management Group. This contribution will help advance the organization’s efforts to meet its $220,000 fundraising goal for the upcoming year.

The donation was accepted by United Way representatives, including Jim Ryan, Vice President; Doug Bauer, Vice President; Doug Gaffey, Corporate Campaign Chair; and Jason Gabler, board member. The Stifel team, led by John Piccolo, presented the check at their Brusselles Street office, where they’ve been serving the financial needs of Elk County and surrounding communities for over 30 years.

The Disaster Assistance Center located at Penn York Retreat Center in Potter County will be closing on October 16^th. The DRC in Tioga County (Knoxville) will remain open and Potter County residents are welcome to visit this location Residents have until November 12^th to register by contacting 1-800-621-3362 or completing an application online at DisasterAssistance.gov

Law Enforcement to Conduct Impaired Driving Enforcement this Weekend

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Pennsylvania DUI Association, and law enforcement agencies across western Pennsylvania will team up this weekend to conduct impaired driving enforcement activities in advance of Halloween.

The annual Sinnemahone Ultra Trail Run set for Saturday October 19.  The event includes three distances from which competitors can select.  The 50k and 25k routes are altered this year to avoid a conflict with the  annual youth hunt.  Runners will leave the Wiley Trail and traverse a new trail which links to Mowery Road. 

Those selecting to run the 50k will leave Emporium starting at 7:30am and have 10 hours to complete the 50k.  That event takes runners through the Elk State Forest on scenic trails including Wiley, Bucktail Path, and Chicago Springs.  Volunteers will man the 6 aid stations for the event.  Each aid station will have a representative from Mountaineer Search & Rescue to maintain radio contact in case of any emergencies.

Coudersport, Pa., October 9, 2024 – UPMC Cole welcomes families and their trick-or-treaters to its annual Halloween Path on Sunday, Oct. 27, 1 to 3 p.m. This free event will be held outdoors, rain or shine, at UPMC Cole’s East Entrance, East 2nd St., Coudersport. 

This year’s theme is “Family Game Night.” Attendees can expect special goodies from several stations.

District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer reports that the medication drop boxes located throughout McKean County continue to be used by residents.  The County Detectives collect the deposits and members of the Attorney General’s Office collects them.  The contents are collected and weighed at least quarterly, and the total is consistently more than 100 pounds of unused medication collected.  The third quarter total (from July 11, 2024 to September 30, 2024) was 123.5 lbs. broken down as follows: From the box located at: The City of Bradford Police Department: 70 lbs.

Low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are available to businesses and residents in Pennsylvania following the announcement of a Presidential 

disaster declaration for Tropical Storm Debby that occurred on Aug. 9-10.“SBA’s mission-driven team stands ready to help Pennsylvania small businesses and residents impacted by this disaster in every way possible under President Biden’s disaster declaration for certain affected areas,” said SBA Administrator Isabel Casillas Guzman. “We’re committed to providing federal disaster loans swiftly and efficiently, with a customer-centric approach to help businesses and communities recover and rebuild.”

The United Methodist Church of Smethport will be hosting speaker Susan Evans, cancer survivor and author of “Don’t Write the Obituary Yet”, on Thursday, October 10th at 6:30 PM.  She will be speaking about her journey and facing challenges with hope and humor.  The event is open to the public and refreshments will be served.

Spirit Week begins at Port Allegany High School as the Student Council prepares for Homecoming 2024.  Monday will be pajama pant day; Tuesday is Mr. Van Gorden Day; Wednesday is Twin Day; Thursday is Wacky Tourist Day and Friday is Orange and Black Day.  The annual Homecoming Parade will be held Friday at 6 p.m. with lineup at 5 p.m.  The parade route will go from Pearl to Mill, down Main Street to Arnold Avenue to the football field parking lot.  Following the parade is a bonfire.  The Junior High Homecoming Dance will be held in the auxiliary gym from 7:00 – 9:30 p..m.  Homecoming activities on Saturday include the PAHS Gators vs. Kane Wolves football game with kick off at 1:30 p.m. Introduction of the court and announcement of the King and Queen will take place during a half-time ceremony.  The Senior High Homecoming Dance will begin at 7 p.m. with the crowning of the King and Queen at 7:30 p.m.   Parents and other guests may attend the crowning.  The dance will end at 10:00 p.m.
