Roy C. Amidon               “beloved husband, father and grandfather”

OSWAYO, PA—Roy C. Amidon, 81, of Oswayo, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, in UPMC Cole, Coudersport, after a brief illness.

Born on Monday, May 31, 1943 in Shinglehouse, he was a son of Leon and Kathryn Amidon.  On February 15, 1969 in Olean, NY, he married Sandra J. “Sandie” Holmberg, who survives.

Roy attended school in both Oswayo and Shinglehouse.  He was employed for 30 years as a truck driver for PennDOT in Coneville. In his younger years, he was a stone cutter in a stone quarry. After retirement, he worked with his son, Richard, taking care of many cemeteries throughout the area.  In his teenage years, he was a pin setter at the bowling alley in Shinglehouse where he earned ten cents a game setting the pins. In his early 20’s he worked in Maine as an x-ray assistant on the submarine, the USS Thresher.

Penelope Jo Yunghans

SHINGLEHOUSE, PA—Penelope Jo “Pen” Yunghans, 78, beloved friend, sister, mother, grandmother, passed away on January 30, 2025 at her home in Shinglehouse, PA. Born in 1946 in Brockport, NY, she was the daughter of F. Laverne and Hilda (Heath) Dietter.

Pen attended Holley High School in Holley, NY and then graduated from Heidelberg University with a degree in Religious Education and Purdue University with a Master’s degree in Sociology. Pen was employed as a bank teller in college both in Frederick, MD and Lafayette, IN, a children’s librarian at Barker Library in Fredonia, NY and volunteered at Oswayo Valley Memorial Library in Shinglehouse. She also worked as a mobile therapist in Potter County, PA and as a counselor in the Wellsville, NY school district. Her life was always dedicated to serving and improving the lives of every community of which she was a part.

Marcein Nelson Perkins STEELE, 90, formerly of Allegany, NY and Leesburg, FL, died Wednesday, February 5, 2025 in Buffalo General Hospital. 

Born September 17, 1934, in Wellsville, she was the daughter of R. Roy and Virginia Eleanor Dunshie Nelson.  On July 19, 1953, in Whitesville, she married Richard L. Perkins, who predeceased her on May 24, 1974. 

She then married Ralph L. Steele, who predeceased her in 1997.  Marcein and Richard owned and operated a dairy farm in West Bingham.  She was employed by The Pines of Machias and as a bus driver by the Belmont School and the Bemus Point Central School District. 

Brete A. ECK, 66, of Friendship, NY, formerly of Scio, died Friday, January 31, 2025 in Houghton Rehabilitation & Nursing Center.  

Born March 24, 1958, in Olean, he was the son of Gordon and Jean Keesler Eck.  A graduate of Richburg High School, he was employed as a drywaller by Dan’s Contracting for many years.  

Marlene M. Wilson, 78, of 1872 Bucktail Road, St. Marys, received her wings Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at her residence, surrounded by her beloved family.

She was born May 31, 1946, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Robert J. and Nadine Goodrow Heiberger.  She was a lifelong resident of the area, a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1964, and a former employee of Alpine Pressed Metals and PC Systems.

Michael J. Knapp           

Michael J. “Mike” Knapp, 67, of Shinglehouse, passed away with his loving family by his side on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, after a long illness.

Dennis J. Furman          

Dennis Jay Furman, 63, of Austin, passed away unexpectedly at work in Summit Township on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

Daniel E. “Dan” HALL, 80, of Wellsville, NY, died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, with his wife, Diane, by his side.  Born in Detroit, MI, Dan was the second of five children.  Surviving besides his wife, Diane, are: his brothers, Robert (Bea) Hall, Gregory (Marge) Hall, and Kenneth (Vicki) Hall; a sister, Deanna (John) Coyle; friend and former wife, Elsa Bekkala, who was also special to him.  Dan cherished the young people in his life, including Diane’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his nephews and nieces; a Little Brother, Christopher; and two exchange students, Nat and Jung.

Dan was always a newsman. He started a short-lived neighborhood tabloid when he was ten years old.  He was editor of his college newspaper.  The majority of his career was with Gannett Newspapers, primarily in Rochester and primarily on the editorial pages.  He finished his career at the Canandaigua Messenger Post, where he was editorial page editor.

William M. “Bill” Giltinan, 98, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, February 5, 2025, at Menno Haven Health Center, Chambersburg, PA., after spending 7 years at Village Square assisted living.  He was born April 14, 1926, in Warren, PA. to the late Marcus and Alice Fagley Giltinan.  Bill was a longtime resident of Warren, moving to Chambersburg, PA., to his daughter and family.  Bill was a 1944 graduate of Warren High School. Bill was employed with GTE Sylvania as a die maker until his retirement in 1987.  Bill met the love of his life at a Sylvania Company picnic.  They were married on July 16, 1949.  Jeanne preceded him in death on September 25, 2017.

After surviving polio as a child, Bill went on to live a very active life, becoming an avid hunter and fisherman.  He was an active member of the Warren Council of the Knights of Columbus and Holy Redeemer Parish, while living in Warren.  Bill and Jeanne enjoyed camping and spending their winters in Palm Bay, FL.

Sally K. Drabert, 80, of Smethport, passed away Wednesday (February 5, 2025) at UPMC-Cole, Coudersport.

She was born October 16, 1944 in Olean, NY, the daughter of Kenneth and Ida (Turner) Norton. She was married to Jack D. Drabert, who died in June of 1996.

Mrs. Drabert was a Port Allegany High School graduate and was house keeping supervisor at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, PA.

Sally enjoyed spending time with her family.
