Penn College men 0-2 in Florida
Competing in the Florida Sunshine Shootout at Daytona Beach, Florida, the Pennsylvania College of Technology men’s basketball team was winless in the program’s first trip that far from home.
In the first game Saturday night, UMass-Boston outscored the Wildcats by 11 points in each half en route to a 99-77 win. Livingston Cross of Union, New Jersey, recorded his eighth double-double of the season for Penn College with a 15-point, 13-rebound effort, while DJ Smith III of Dallastown added 15 points, Gavin Barrett of Roselle, New Jersey, scored 14 and Julien Leveille of Maplewood, New Jersey, tallied 12 points.
On Sunday against Norwich College, Penn College led by five points and trailed by six in the second half before forcing ties at 49 and 51, only to be outscored 15-14 down the stretch in a 66-65 loss. Cross again led the Wildcats with 23 points and 14 rebounds — his ninth double-double of the season — and pushed his career scoring total to 912.

Patrick E. Rodgers, 82, of Emporium, PA

Patrick E. Rodgers, 82, of Emporium, PA passed away peacefully with his family by his side at Bradford Manor, Bradford, PA on Friday evening (December 27, 2024). He was born January 20, 1942 in Houtzdale, PA a son of the late Francis and Jean Sheridan Rodgers. On December 10, 1966 he married the late Delores Cardinal.
Pat graduated from Moshannon Valley High School in the class of 1960. He served with the US Army from 1964-1966. He worked many years for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board from which he retired in 2002. Pat was an active member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Emporium, the VFW, Moose, and was a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Emporium Council #990 from June 1980 through June of 1982.

* WHERE…Lake Erie shoreline in Erie and Chautauqua counties.
* WHEN…From Sunday evening through Monday afternoon.
* IMPACTS…The rapid rise in water levels at the eastern end of
Lake Erie may result in lakeshore flooding along the Lake Erie
shore. Flooding is possible along Route 5 in Hamburg, Buffalo
Harbor and Canalside, Dunkirk Harbor, and other flood prone
locations. Very high wave action may also result in
significant shoreline erosion.
INSTRUCTIONS: A Lakeshore Flood Watch means that conditions favorable for
lakeshore flooding are expected to develop. Residents on or near
the shore should take action to protect property, and listen to
local radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio for later
statements or warnings.

Michael J. Lundberg, 74, of Warren, PA., died Saturday afternoon, December 28, 2024, at his residence with his family at his side. He was born April 26, 1950, in Kane PA. Mike was the son of Wilfred “Bud” and Doris Anderson Lundberg. He was a lifelong Warren area resident. Mike was a 1968 graduate of Warren Area High School. He was owner/operator of Warren Diamond Core Drilling, worked 25 years at United Refining Company and currently at Jefferson Defrees Family Center.

Mary L. Adams, 85, of 9459 Dewey Road, Black Creek, passed away, Friday, December 27, 2024 at home after a short illness.
Born on September 10, 1939, in Hinsdale she was a daughter of George and Margaret Willover Barber. On October 22, 1955, in Black Creek, she married John M. Adams who predeceased her on April 21, 1993.
Mary was a graduate of Cuba Central School. While her children were young, she was a homemaker and later worked for Home Care and Hospice for 25 years before retiring.
She enjoyed reading, crafts, crocheting, knitting, and line danced for sixteen years, but most of all cherished the time she spent with her family.
Sandra J. Matzner, 84, of Bradford, PA.

Sandra J. Matzner, 84, of Bradford, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2024 surrounded by her loving family at the Pavilion at BRMC.
She was born on February 11, 1940 in Bradford; a daughter of the late Alfred and Doris Weaver Franklin.
She attended Bradford Area Schools.
She was the widow of Angelo R. Matzner who preceded her in death on August 18, 2009.
She was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening and loved all of her animals.
Donna Kay Long, 74, of Emporium, PA

Donna Kay Long, 74, of Emporium, PA passed away with her daughter by her side at Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport, PA on Saturday morning (December 28, 2024). She was born September 21, 1950 in St. Marys, PA a daughter of the late Joseph and Eleanora Lefler Kossman. On November 13, 2010 in First Baptist Church, Emporium she married Richard Long, who survives.
She graduated from Cameron County High School and retired from Sheetz in Emporium where she worked for many years. Donna loved her family more than anything and her cabin in the Valley: Her Yellow Rose.
PennDOT Driver License, Photo Centers Closed for New Year’s Holiday

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that all driver license and photo centers, including its full-service center in Harrisburg, will be closed Wednesday, January 1, 2025, in observance of the New Year’s holiday.
Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services, including all forms, publications, and driver training manuals, online through PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services website.
UPMC Trauma Patient Makes Progress Through Rare, Personalized Rehabilitation Program
Williamsport, Pa., December 23, 2024 – In early July, a motorcycle accident left Nathan Beitz, 44, with a list of life-threating injuries like a traumatic brain injury and a ruptured diaphragm, among others that required extensive care. His road to recovery would be long and uncertain, but through a personalized rehabilitation approach and a dedicated care team and family, Nate’s journey has been one of successes.

Peggy (Bohnert) Butters, 92, of Morris, PA.

Peggy (Bohnert) Butters, 92, of Morris, passed away on December 24, 2024, with her family by her side.
She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Butters, who passed away in 2012. They shared 58 years of marriage together. Peggy was born September 27, 1932, the daughter of the late Franklin Bohnert and Margaret Taylor Bohnert, and later after her mother’s passing, her stepmother Dorotha Bohnert. Peggy graduated from Liberty High School and was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Peggy assisted her husband Raymond on the farm and was a long-standing and active member of the church. She loved being with her family and friends, and keeping busy attending church, farming, milking cows, cooking, canning, baking cookies, and gardening.
Leadership Elk Cameron Program Explores Education and the Arts

The Community Education Center’s Leadership Elk and Cameron program’s (LEC) monthly session focused on education and the arts in December. The St. Marys Area school district hosted the class in the morning where Dr. Ramsey facilitated several problem-solving stations related to leadership and the K12 education landscape. Participants visited the Dutch Manufacturing classroom and learned about the student-run enterprise program. At the CEC building, participants visited Dickinson’s Children’s Center and learned about the Parents as Teachers programs; the IU9 Adult Basic Education instructor provided information about their classes; and the Northern PA Regional College demonstrated their live-interactive delivery platform and presented the various degree programs and noncredit trainings available at the CEC in St. Marys. Lunch was sponsored by the Northern PA Regional College.
Following lunch, local artist Janet VanEerden led the group through a water color exercise; and then the class travelled to the St. Marys Moose to meet Mike Ames and learn about the Footlighters of Elk County. Participants also presented vision boards of their small group community improvement projects. This year’s projects include assisting the Elk/Cameron Suicide Prevention Task Force in rolling out the 988 Helpline; installation of outdoor AED/First Aid stations in local communities; and creating a new fund at the Elk County Community Foundation to assist families with childcare costs.
