Harold A. “Whitey” Pistner, 81, of West Theresia Road, St. Marys, passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at Pinecrest Manor.
He was born on May 16, 1941 in St. Marys, PA, a son of the late Harold C. and Martha M. Keller Pistner.
On October 9, 1963, at St. Boniface Church, he married Carolyn Young Pistner, who preceded him in death on March 25, 2016. Together they shared more than 52 years of marriage.
Whitey was a lifelong resident of the area and retired from the family owned and operated business, St. Marys Box Company. He loved nothing more than taking a ride around the county, often stopping to visit his kids after work. He also loved his Sheltie dogs, Lady and Hazel.
He is survived by 3 children; Nancy (Keith Wehler) Pistner of St. Marys, Daniel (Missy) Pistner of St. Marys, and Timothy (Christine) Pistner of Kersey; by six grandchildren; Allison (Kyle), Courteney, Kendra (Paul), Mitchell (Kristina) Kyle, and Zachary and by two great-grandchildren; Kameron and Kya. He is also survived by four siblings; Margaret “Peg” Pistner of Bradford, William (Millie) Pistner of St. Marys, Thomas Pistner of St. Marys, and Steve (Tina) Pistner of Kersey, as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service for Harold A. “Whitey” Pistner will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Lynch-Green Funeral Home.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.

Kevin and Patty Dusenbury, of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, are grateful for the extreme generosity of many donors to their Gift of Memory program. Toys and gifts were delivered to the Christmas House in Coudersport, marking the 22nd year of the program.
Delivering the toys were Kevin and Patty and the Klesa family, who have graciously embraced the Gift of Memory program to honor their son and brother, Jon, having themselves brought 335 gifts and toys donated by their family and friends this year.
Dusenbury said, “We have donors from the first year that continue to donate and new donors every year. We had several donors who contributed very generous amounts of monies which allowed us to shop for specific needs to purchase items for the older children”.
Dusenbury, who is the owner and funeral director of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home in Shinglehouse and the Potter County Coroner stated, “we are once again amazed by the generosity of so many people. As we have done the last two years, we started collecting gifts early at the request of the Christmas House. We truly THANK each person who donated, assuring that many less fortunate individuals and families will have a brighter and happier Christmas. We wish everyone a beautiful, blessed and very Merry Christmas.”

Mary J. Carr, 55, of East Main Street, Bradford, PA passed away Saturday, December 10, 2022, at Olean General Hospital.
Born March 12, 1967, in Bradford, she was a daughter of the late James Leland and Sandra L. (Sweet) Carr.
Mary attended Bradford Schools.
She was formerly employed as a housekeeper for local area families, but more recently was a homemaker.
Mary enjoyed playing the lottery, bingo, but most of all spending time with her family and her pets.
Surviving is her companion of more than 25 years, Rick L. Pope, one daughter, Danielle Reed, of Bradford, one step-daughter Krissy Campbell, one stepson, Mike Pope, nine grandchildren, Allie Burton, Taylor and Nikolas Kline, Catilin, Mike and James Pope. Christopher Campbell, Brittney and Jacob Quick, one sister, Janice Hulings, of Bradford, two brothers, James Carr, of Henretta NY, and Glenn Carr, of Bradford, and many nieces, nephews, aunt, uncles, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Joseph Carr, one niece, Kristen Regal, and one nephew, Ralph Carr, and numerous aunts and uncles.
Friends will be invited to attend a Celebration of Life for Mary at a later date to be announced. Burial will be in Willow Dale Cemetery.

Sharon L. Armstrong, 66, of Bradford, PA
Sharon L. Armstrong, 66, of Bradford, PA unexpectedly passed away Friday, December 9, 2022, at her residence.
Born August 31, 1956, in Bradford, she was a daughter of the late John J. and Helen (Hopkins) Oleksa. She was a 1974 graduate of Limestone High School.
On September 12, 1981, in Limestone, NY at St. Patrick’s Church, she married Jeff P. Armstrong.
Sharon was a dedicated employee at W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery for nearly 45 years. She took great pride in her contribution to the quality production of USA made pocket knives. Her favorite pocket knife was the Copperhead. She retired earlier this year.
Sharon was an avid gardener. She enjoyed spending her free time working endlessly on her landscape beds, planting and transplanting her shrubs and flower gardens to get them just how she wanted them. During this first year of her retirement, she expanded her vegetable garden and flower gardens, with plans for more landscape bed additions this coming summer. Sharon was a skilled and independent craftswoman, who built and updated many parts of her house completely by herself. She had a knack for arts and crafts projects and created many beautiful wreaths and various decorations for friends and family. Sharon was also a talented seamstress, sewing one-of-a-kind dresses and costumes for her daughters and grandchildren. She knitted several detailed blankets for her daughters and grandchildren. The greatest joys of her life started nearly 15 years ago, when she was promoted from mom to Gramma. She devoted her life to her daughters and grandchildren. She always chose to forgo her own comforts and needs so that her daughters and grandchildren had everything and more than they needed in life.
Surviving are two daughters, Stacie (Bill McCann) Carey, and Allison (Fred) Armstrong-Graham, both of Bradford, four grandchildren, Kamden James Carey, Raiden Westlake, Maliya Graham, and Etta May McCann, one sister, Deborah C. (John) Bigler, of Bradford, one brother, John S. (Melissa) Oleksa, of Greenville, SC and several nieces and nephews.
Sharon was proceeded in death by both her parents, one granddaughter, Aleksa Aylene Carey and her former spouse, Jeff P. Armstrong.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday December 14, 2022, from 4 pm to 7 pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc. 372 East Main Street, where funeral services will be held at 7 pm with Fr. Jim Gutting, of St. Bernard Church, officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery.

William J McCormack, 79, of Bradford, PA
William J McCormack, 79, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, of Bradford, PA passed away, Thursday, December 8, 2022.
Born December 12, 1942, in Bradford, he was the son of the late Harold and Nellie (Zook) McCormack.
Bill was a 1960 graduate of St. Bernard High School and attended the Erie School of Business.
On June 20, 1964, in Our Mother of Perpetual Help, he married Joan A Pantuso, who survives.
Bill started his career working as a Prudential insurance agent and then was hired in 1969 as a firefighter for the city of Bradford. He worked there for 38 years progressing from fire fighter to Captain and finally elevating to the position of Chief, which he held for 10 years until his retirement. He was instrumental in bringing paramedics to the department which provided advanced life support to the city. As Chief, Bill was determined to keep the department modernized with the most up to date equipment, technology, and additional training for each firefighter to increase their safety. He owned and operated the New Method Manufacturing Company and in 1984 created the McCormack Ambulance Service, which provided transportation services to the citizens of Bradford.
After retirement Bill and his wife Joan loved to travel to spend time with their kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. Bill also loved to hunt and fish and spend his spare time enjoying the outdoors. He was always there to support his family and friends or anyone who needed a helping hand. He was never shy about telling you a story, and his verbal directions were always very creative. Bill was also an active member of the Rambler association as their Treasurer.
Surviving in addition to his wife Joan of 58 years, is one daughter, Colleen (Thomas) Frigo of Bradford, three sons, Michael (Mary Jane) McCormack of Georgetown TX, Thomas (Celeste) McCormack of Las Vegas NV, Scott (Tracy) McCormack of Heath TX, seven grandchildren, Emily (Chris) Berger of Grand Prairie TX, Matthew (Abby) McCormack of Austin TX, Adam (Taylor) McCormack of Rockwall TX, Maddy McCormack of Las Vegas NV, Megan McCormack (Dustin Mastin) of Reno NV, Joey Frigo of Bradford, and Mia McCormack of Las Vegas NV, along with five great grandkids Emma and Mallory McCormack, Ryan and Jacob Berger and Emery Mastin.
Family will receive friends on Thursday December 15, 2022, from 4 pm to 7 pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc. 372 East Main Street. Friends are also invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at 10:00 am in St. Bernard Church, with Rev. John Jacquel, Pastor as Celebrant. Deborah “Debbie” Rickerson Ames, 70, of Warren, PA passed away on Friday December 9, 2022, in AHN, St Vincent’s Hospital, Erie, PA.
She was born in Warren, PA on April 26, 1952, the daughter of the late Robert A. and Mary Elizabeth Andersen Rickerson. Debbie was a graduate of Warren High School Class of 1970. On August 4, 1973, she married the love of her life, Mr. Craig Ames in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Warren, and they spent 50 years together. Debbie was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Warren. She was employed for many years as a Deputy Registrar for the PA Department of Vital Statistics.
Debbie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially around the holidays, she enjoyed journaling, flowers, and had a love for shopping.
She is survived by her loving husband, Craig R. Ames of Warren, four children Jason C. Ames, of Seattle, WA, Christina Ames Caplan and husband Brian of Denver, CO, Alexis D. Ames of Denver, CO, and Jayden E. Ames and her boyfriend Carter Borland, of Warren; seven grandchildren; two sisters Lisa Grinnell and husband Gregg, and Tina Rickerson all of Tiona, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Debbie was preceded in death by two brothers Charles Rickerson and Robert C. “Fluff” Rickerson.

Mary “Jeanne” Klaiber, age 96, of St. Marys, PA
Mary “Jeanne” Klaiber, age 96, of St. Marys, PA has gone to be with her Lord on December 10, 2022, following a brief illness.
She was born on January 25, 1926 in St. Marys, PA, the daughter of the late George and Marcella (Krieg) Hathorn. On January 31, 1948, she married the late James F. Klaiber who preceded her in death on August 13, 2016. Together they shared more than 68 years of love and happiness.
Jeanne was a lifelong resident of St. Marys, PA and a 1943 graduate of Central Catholic High School. As a devout Catholic, she was dedicated to the Church. She was a member of the St. Anne’s Society where she served as president for over 25 years and also a member of the Altar Society. She served as a Eucharistic Minister at the Sacred Heart Church, a cafeteria volunteer at the elementary school, and a Girl Scout leader. A homemaker most of her life, she worked at Montgomery Ward in St. Marys for several years.
Words cannot adequately express the endless love she had for her family, and that they had for her. She was a kind, loving, and generous mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was the rock of her family. She had a gift of hospitality. While she enjoyed traveling with her husband, friends, and family, she was most comfortable at home in the kitchen or at their camp where she enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and anyone that stopped in to visit. One of her favorite past times was playing cards and board games. Jeanne will always be remembered by the way that she touched the lives of so many people.
She is survived by 6 children: John (Deborah) Klaiber of Jim Thorpe, PA; Georgia (Terry) Beyer of Indianapolis, IN; Ann (Larry) Walker of Pittsburgh, PA; Ginny (Ron) Kopko of Clarion, PA; Mike (Debbie) Klaiber, of Harrisburg, PA; JoAnn (Bill) Schatz of St. Marys, PA; by her grandchildren, Julie (Matthew) Hutchinson, Krista (Jeff) Linke, Scott (Clara) Walker, Jennifer (Shane) Byrd, Steven (Amanda) Walker, Alex Kopko, Alison (John) Kirkpatrick, Nicholas (Michelle) Wiencek, Kyle, Doug, and Bryan Schatz and 14 great grandchildren; and one sister, Sally Lanzel, of St. Marys.
In addition to her parents, Jeanne was preceded in death by twin children at birth, Mary Theresa and James Thomas; by a brother, Richard Hathorn; two sisters, Louise Nissel and Sr. Mariella, OSB; and a grandson, Ryan Klaiber.
Immediate family and close friends will be received on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 between 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM at Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home.

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania State Police promoted 38 members to the rank of sergeant and 121 members to the rank of corporal during a ceremony at LCBC Manheim in Lancaster County on December 7, Commissioner Robert Evanchick announced. Two Bureau of Liquor Enforcement employees were also promoted to enforcement officer 3 during the ceremony.

Adam S. Kirk, of Williamsport, Lycoming County, has been promoted to sergeant and assigned to Troop C, Lewis Run. Sergeant Kirk enlisted in the state police in 2006 and was promoted to corporal in 2018.

Beverly Nan Averill, 92, of 92 Deer Path Lane, Emporium, PA passed away at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA on Friday afternoon (December 9, 2022).
She was born July 13, 1930 in Weedville, PA a daughter of the late Dolph and Nancy Hedberg Bilodeau. On Feb. 4, 1950 in the First United Methodist Church, Emporium, PA she married the late William D. Averill who died Dec. 4, 2004. She later married Robert Wennin on July 7, 2012. He died November 7, 2022.
Beverly graduated from Bennetts Valley High School in 1948. She was a very active member of the Keating Summit United Methodist Church, for which she was recently recognized for her 70 years of service to the church. In her early years she worked at Sylvania in St. Marys, PA. She later sold Stanley Home Products while also being a full time homemaker. She loved traveling, gardening, and was an avid bowler for many years.
She is survived by two sons, David Averill (Cheryl), Emporium; and Douglas Averill (Sally), Mandeville, LA; a daughter, Joan Boshart (Tony), Virginia Beach, VA; seven grandchildren: Vanessa, Heather, Lisa, Annie, Ben, Tim and Lori, four great grandchildren: Alex, Tyler, Bryce and River.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, a son, Alex Averill; grandson, Eric Averill, four brothers, John, Al, Fred and Gerry; six sisters, Mid, Christine, Dorothy, Esther, Emilie and Delores.
Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. 4th St., Emporium, PA on Tuesday (Dec. 13, 2022) from 10:00 AM until 11:45 AM followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 PM with Rev. Todd Lamer, Pastor of Keating Summit United Methodist Church, officiating.

CITIZENS ASKED TO HELP WITH COWANESQUE CIRCLE CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT ON SATURDAY, DEC. 17; SIGN UP BY DEC. 12
The Tiadaghton Audubon Society, a group of local birders based in Wellsboro, Pa. needs help with the Cowanesque Circle Christmas bird count in Tioga County, Pa. and New York on Saturday, Dec. 17. People who can help are asked to sign up by this coming Monday, Dec. 12.
It is not necessary to be a member of either the Tiadaghton or the National Audubon Society to participate.
The Cowanesque Circle has a diameter of 15 miles and is centered on Cowanesque Lake with a radius of 7.5 miles. It covers the following areas: North – Pinnacle State Park in N.Y.; South – Ives Run Campground; West – Osceola; and East – East Lawrence Road and Woodford Road.
“We would appreciate it if more people living in or outside the Cowanesque bird circle area who don’t want to leave their homes would get involved by counting the birds at their own bird feeders in their own backyards,” said Sean Minnick, coordinator.
“If backyard birders call or email me, I can tell them how to do a count and whether they are in the Cowanesque Circle area and should send the data to us. If they live outside our circle area, they will be referred to the appropriate place to report their bird data,” Minnick said.
“We also need people willing to go on the road to participate in the Cowanesque Circle bird count,” he said. At least 10 volunteers are needed. Each participant will count every bird they see as he/she/they follow their assigned routes.
People who have never participated before but are interested and comfortable with going out on their own are welcome to help,” Minnick said. “It might be fun for a family or people living in the same household to participate together.”

Bird count volunteers will get their area assignments or confirmation of their participation from their own properties via email.
PRE-REGISTRATION OPEN FOR INTRO TO ICE FISHING PROGRAMS FOR WOMEN ONLY – FEMALES AGES 12 AND UP AND ADULTS – AND FOR INTRO TO ICE FISHING PROGRAMS FOR ANYONE – AGES 12 AND UP AND ADULTS –
Preregistration opens this Friday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. for the “Women’s Intro to Ice Fishing” program for adult women as well as girls and young women,12 and older and for the “Intro to Ice Fishing” program for any adult and youth ages 12 and up in January of 2023 by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission in partnership with Wellsboro Tackle Shack. Slots will fill up fast based on what has happened in years past.
All of the programs are free and include both a required virtual session and an on-ice session.
For the virtual session, participants, from the comfort of their own homes and using their own computers, will join instructors online to begin their ice fishing journey. This session will introduce participants to ice fishing equipment, ice safety, baits, lures, layering, planning a trip, ice fishing locations and important details about the on-ice session of the program.
The on-ice session will be at Nessmuk Lake, Wellsboro, PA 16901. It includes a brief review of information from the virtual session, skills instruction and hands-on ice fishing. Participants will learn more about ice augers, shelters, heaters and techniques. This session also includes a fish filleting and cooking demonstration. Samples will be available.
A fishing license is not required.
PFBC instructors will not only provide free instruction, both virtually and in-person, but also ice fishing gear and bait for the on-ice session. Participants will also have a chance to win random door prizes provided by Wellsboro Tackle Shack.

Participants who register for one on-ice session will automatically be registered for the virtual session, which is being held on one day only, Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Once registered, participants will receive a confirmation email with the date and time of the virtual program as a reminder. The virtual session link will be sent to registrants one week in advance.

During a week in which the Pennsylvania College of Technology men’s basketball and wrestling teams were off, one wrestler made national headlines, and the women’s basketball squad hit the court twice.

Isaac Cory, a freshman from Montoursville who is 10-0 this season, made program history when he became the first nationally-ranked Wildcat, garnering the No. 11 spot at 184 pounds in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III rankings. Cory, who won the PIAA Class AA 189-pound championship earlier this year, also is ranked No. 2 in the Mideast Region.
“It’s well-earned recognition,” coach Pankil Chander said. “This is the first time a Penn College wrestler has been ranked nationally and may be the first time a PCT athlete or program is represented in any top 15 national category ever, so it’s an excellent milestone for a great young man.
“At the end of the day, matches are won and lost on the mat and rankings change every other week — Isaac’s work ethic and mindset will remain consistent regardless. He knows that is what will propel him to new heights.”
Women’s basketball
A 17-8 first quarter gave Penn College the early advantage at home in nonconference play on Friday before Penn State Altoona held the upper hand over the following three periods in a 55-47 Lions win, their second over the Wildcats in 10 days. Kayleigh Miller, of Sayre, came off the bench to lead Penn College in scoring with 13 points, while Rachael Teats, of Middleburg, tallied 10.
Back in action on Saturday, hosting once-beaten Houghton College, the visitors opened a 30-12 halftime lead and went on for a 66-43 nonconference win that dropped the Wildcat to 1-7 overall. Miller, Teats and Ja’Quela Dyer, of Dover, Delaware, each scored eight points to pace Penn College and Dyer led the team with eight rebounds.
The Wildcats now are idle until the last week of the month when they compete in the CUNY Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament at Lehman College in Bronx, New York.
