Coudersport Rotary Club was Pleased to Welcome Ed McCrea to Their July 22, 2024 Meeting at A&W West End Grill.
Ed McCrea is the President and Co-Founder of Environmental Education and Conservation Global (EECG), an international non-profit in its 20th year. EECG uses the power of education to create a global population that values the preservation of natural species. A lot of their work is now in India, Thailand and 15 different countries, two of them in Africa. Their only income is donations.
The organization offers international courses in applied Environmental Education. They offer technical assistance on how to evaluate a project and also a Climate Change Collaborative and they give small grants to conservation organizations. $500 goes a long way in some of these countries.
EECG has been in Tanzania for 4-5 years working on one of the best Wildlife Conservation places in the world, Serengeti National Park. In Tanzania, David Kabambo is the Director and Founder of Peace for Conservation. He runs a Wheelchair Project and has a goal of providing 100 wheelchairs to Tanzanians in need. There is no help from the government for handicapped people, especially in rural areas. Funds for 68 wheelchairs have been donated so far.
Cost is $350 for an adult tricycle. These modified bicycles place the individual seated on a platform on which items can be carried, and the person operates pedals near the top of the bikes with their hands. The wheelchairs are built, supplied, and repaired locally from bicycle parts. They are sturdy and stand up to rough use.
Once helpless and considered a burden to their families, people with these wheelchairs can make a living, get married and have children.
Coudersport Rotary donated $500 to the wheelchair project and an additional $125.30 was in the jar that was passed around.
If you are interested in donating to this project, tax-deductible donations can be made by check to EECG c/o Ed McCrea, 204
East Locust Street, Coudersport, PA 16915. His email is emccrea@eecg.org.
All money goes straight to the wheelchair. EECG covers the cost of wire transfers etc. The feeling of self-reliance the recipients of wheelchairs get is priceless!
