Corwynn P. “Cork” Sauve, Sr., 86, of Coudersport, PA passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at Sweden Valley Manor after a brief battle with cancer.
Cork was born on November 14, 1936, in Harrisburg, the son of the late Robert P. and Winifred J. (Fisher) Sauve. Cork married the former Kathy E. Snyder on September 9, 1976, and they recently celebrated 47 years of marriage.
Cork served in the Marines for 13 years and survived the Vietnam War completing two tours in the Second Battalion, 4th Marines. Cork was one of the “Magnificent Bastards” in Operation Starlight. Although Cork didn’t really speak much about his experience in the war, he proudly displayed his role in America’s freedom by flying the US and Marine Corps flags outside his home and always wearing his Marine-insignia caps.
During Cork’s military service, while stationed in Hawaii, he got the chance to be an extra in the movie “In Harms Way” and meet the stars John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Patricia Neal, and until his passing kept a note and autograph from John Wayne on his dresser.
Cork enjoyed the outdoors including fly fishing, hunting, and camping. He always looked forward to the yearly family camping/fishing trips, which often included four generations, in which he could demonstrate his flyfishing talents. He could often be found, preparing months ahead of time, in his den showing the next generation how to tie flies for the upcoming trip.
He was also a talented carpenter and spent many hours with his sons helping to remodel their homes and would jump at the opportunity to be involved.
Cork was always interested in helping others and was an active member of “God’s Country Trout Unlimited” for Potter County for over 40 years. During this time he was involved in the local Healing Waters Program teaching veterans flyfishing and how to tie flies. Cork continued to participate in this program for 14 years even when his cancer symptoms became apparent in May of 2023.
In addition to his wife, Kathy, Cork is survived by sons: Corwynn “Cork” (Kris) Sauve, Jr. of Tucson, AZ; Tom Kathleen) Sauve of Harrisburg; John (Rosamaria) Sauve of Dumfries, VA; six grandchildren: Derek Sauve, Shontara Russ, Jozalyn Bisignano, John Sauve, Jr., Laticia Sauve and Sean Sauve along with eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Cork was preceded in death by his brothers: Robert, Bill, and Edward.
At Cork’s request, there will be no public service and his final resting rest place will be at Quantico.
Cork was a member of St. Eulalia Catholic Church, Coudersport. The family has entrusted Cork’s arrangements to the Thomas E. Fickinger Funeral Home, 210 N. East St., Coudersport. To share a memory or condolence visit www.thomasfickinger.com.
