The American Refining Group – Our Legacy Fund formerly known as the Harry J. Halloran Bradford Prosperity Fund is pleased to announce the winner of their scholarship contest administered by the McKean County Community Foundation (MCCF).  This year, the scholarship criteria were uniquely revised to give applicants the opportunity to rename the fund, and further promote the vision of Mr. Halloran.

Korie Dixon, a graduate of Bradford Area High School, is the recipient of the $500.00 scholarship and receives credit for the visionary name change.  During a reception in her honor, Ms. Dixon explained that the idea for the name came after conducting research and reading books about ARG, including materials about Harry J. Halloran himself. The committee selected Korie’s essay for its depth of research and exceptional writing. The “legacy” theme she aptly refers to, is a cornerstone of the ARG’s business model which relies heavily on legacy crude barrels from the Pennsylvania oil fields, as well as the notion of keeping the refinery sustainable in the Bradford community for years to come.

Community appreciation ceremony will celebrate partnership and volunteers

MARIENVILLE – To recognize the partnership and volunteer commitment that made the shop possible, the PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship will hold a community appreciation day and official ribbon cutting celebration for the PA Wilds Conservation Shop in Marienville on August 30.

The shop, located in the former train depot building in Jenks Township in Forest County, is one of three total PA Wilds Conservation Shops. Operated by the nonprofit PA Wilds Center, these mission-driven gift shops help improve market access for rural entrepreneurs by sourcing 90 percent of their inventory from rural makers and businesses in the 13-county PA Wilds region, while also accomplishing other mission points.

The North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission (North Central) hosted a Banker’s Breakfast on Tuesday morning at the DuBois Country Club where financial industry experts shared information on a myriad of lending and business assistance programs designed to help business and industry thrive in the six-county region.

Bankers, attorneys, and economic development professionals learned about eligibility and lending requirements and processes from North Central, Pursuit, The Progress Fund, and Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern Pennsylvania. Attendees also learned how PennWest Clarion University’s Small Business Development Center can assist existing and start-up businesses through consultation and training.

ROULETTE – Northern Pennsylvania Regional College’s Workforce Development department is providing an opportunity for Potter County area residents to receive training to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). The cost of this course is $350.00, but Potter County residents may be eligible for reimbursement if they complete the course with a passing grade, thanks to support from the County of Potter. Residents from outside of Potter County are also welcome to sign up for this course offering. Before beginning the course, students are required to complete a placement test to determine class eligibility.

​Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) placed radar-controlled speed display boards this week on Route 2006 and Route 3040, both in Centre County. The boards are intended to remind drivers to obey the posted speed limit and aid in curbing speeding, a common type of aggressive driving behavior.

​Montoursville, PA – Motorists are advised a milling and resurfacing project continues on Route 87 in Montoursville Borough, Fairfield Township, Upper Fairfield Township and Plunketts Creek Township, Lycoming County.

The week of Monday, August 19, 2024, the contractor, Glenn O. Hawbaker will continue resurfacing operations along Route 87 between the Interstate 180 overpass in Montoursville Borough and north to Pier 87 Bar and Grill in Plunketts Creek Township.

​Montoursville, PA – Motorists are advised that a two-year embankment stabilization project continues on Route 44 between Route 973 and Waterville in Cummings Township and between Route 220 and Torbert Lane in Watson Township, Lycoming County.

Please be advised County Road 26 from Van Allen Road to Lilly Road will be closed from approximately 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on August 20 to replace a culvert. There will not be an on-site detour and motorists are urged to seek alternate routes.  Thank you for your cooperation

WARREN – Northern Pennsylvania Regional College is pleased to announce the hiring of Dr. Ben Malczyk to the role of Vice President of Academics. Malczyk brings many years of experience in a collection of higher education roles to the institution.

Montoursville, PA – Motorists traveling to the greater Williamsport area this week and next week should expect congestion on local roadways, especially Interstate 180 eastbound and westbound, Route 220 northbound, and Route 15 northbound and southbound in Lycoming County, due to the Little League World Series.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) advises motorists to be prepared for an increase of traffic over the next two weeks and should plan for traffic delays, particularly in the South Williamsport and Williamsport areas.

Motorists should be prepared for changing traffic patterns, slow-moving or stopped vehicles and especially be on the alert for pedestrians crossing streets and highways.

One of the most unique and explosive motions in sports is the overhead throwing motion. Throwing a baseball, softball, or football overhead places extremely high stresses on the shoulder and elbow. In order to put velocity into a thrown ball, power is generated from the ground with the lower body, transferred through the core into the arm, ultimately propelling the ball forward.

OLEAN, N.Y., August 13 – Five area graduates have received memorial scholarships administered by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

Preston Conner received the Deputy Wayne Krieger and Carole Krieger Memorial Scholarship for $500.

The scholarship is available to a Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES criminal justice student from any of the three BOCES locations, pursuing a degree in law enforcement, or to area students intending pursue studies in criminal justice and related fields of study. The fund was established in memory of sheriff’s deputy Wayne Krieger by his family. The name of the scholarship was changed in 2019 to also honor Mr. Krieger’s wife, Carol Krieger, who passed away in January of that year.

 Motorists who travel Route 49 in Westfield Township, Tioga County are advised the road is closed between Pritchard Hollow Road and Crance Brood Road as a precaution due to undermining at the bridge.

On Tuesday, August 14, 2024, a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation maintenance crew established long-term detours to be in effect while a repair project can be completed.

Judith A. Kennedy:  Loving Mother and Grandmother

Judith A. Kennedy, 85, formerly of 1249 Salt Rising Road, Bolivar, passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at Cuba Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born on July 10, 1939, in Olean, she was a daughter of William and Evelyne Eaton Anderson.  On May 3, 1974, in Olean, she married Donald Kennedy who predeceased her in 2003.

She was a graduate of Olean High School.  She had worked for Alcas Cutlery and then was employed by the Cattaraugus County Rehabilitation Center as a Direct Support Professional for many years prior to her retirement.

Judith was past member of the Olean Kennel Club.  She enjoyed playing euchre, playing cards, and Bingo 

At 6 p.m. this Friday, August 16, Logan Route will perform on the outdoor stage at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts at 104 Main Street in Wellsboro. The outdoor stage is located on the Central Avenue side of the building. 
 

This past summer, I had the opportunity to intern at the Cameron County Commissioners’ Office as the Marketing Intern. I have been the person behind the summer’s posts on the Look Up Cameron County Facebook Page and website. I have learned a lot during my time in the Commissioner’s Office that I will take with me through college and my career. During my time here, I have boosted the amount of followers on the Facebook page, gained more insights and page views on the website, conducted interviews with local businesses and community members to better promote their businesses and share their stories.
