Linda Jane Lovell passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, August 5.

Linda was born in Olean, New York on April 25, 1963, and was a lifelong area resident. At the age of 17, she began working for Koeppel’s hobby shop in Olean. She worked at Computer Experience from 1983-1985, where she met her husband of 36 years. She married Perry R. Lovell on July 18, 1987, with whom she spent the rest of her life.

From 1985 to 1986, she worked as an administrative assistant at Blumenthal’s of Bradford. After a brief period in the office at Eade’s Distributing in the summer of 1986, she was hired as a Computer Coordinator for Franklinville Central School until 1988. Throughout her early adult life, she would spend the fall working as time permitted at her family’s Cider Mill in Portville, New York until they sold it in 1989. Linda was an assistant manager at Manos Theater in the Olean Center Mall from 1988-1990, when the first of her two children was born. She began working again in 1994, as the manager of The Castle Cinemas for the next ten years. She was elected Hinsdale Town Justice in 2001 and served two four-year terms. In 2011, she joined the Cattaraugus County Public Defender’s Office, where she proceeded to work until her passing.

Michael P. Close, 63, Ret. Police Chief of the Bradford City Police Department, a resident of Bradford, PA passed away Sunday, August 6, 2023, at his home, after a brief illness.

Rita Marie Simchick, 84, of 141 East Avenue, Johnsonburg, PA passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side at home on Monday evening, August 7, 2023 following a brief illness.

She was born in St. Marys on April 16, 1939, a daughter to the late George and Mary Margaret Seifert Schinabeck. On October 27, 1962 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg she married Edward R. Simchick. He preceded her in death on June 23, 2005. 

W. Elaine FLEWELLYN, 97, of Ulysses, PA, died Monday, August 7, 2023 Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport.  

Born May 4, 1926, in Ulysses, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Lois M. Cook Hyde.  On June 22, 1946, in Ulysses, she married John E. Flewellyn, who predeceased her on April 26, 1990.  

A 1944 graduate of Ulysses High School, she was employed by Morgan’s Country Cottage in Ulysses and the Koch, Koch-Wetmore, and Olney Funeral Homes in Ulysses.  

Emily Y. CARY, 84, Westfield, PA, died Monday, August 7, 2023 in UPMC Williamsport.  Born October 9, 1938, in Harrison Township, she was the daughter of Arthur and Belva Lampman Hand.  On May 3, 1969, she married George W. Cary, who predeceased her on November 29, 1995.  She attended the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Harrison Valley.  Emily devoted her life to caring for her family.  

Surviving are: two step-sons, George Cary, Jr. of Newton, NC and Donald (Christine) Cary of Harrison Valley;  12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd (Esther) Hand of Harrison Valley; nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Gregory Cook; a step-son, Keith Cary; a step-daughter, Diane Counts; three brothers, Carlton Hand, Elmer Hand, and Pecos Hand; and a sister, Vivian Harper.  

Friends may call­­­­­­­­­­­­ at Olney-Foust Funeral Homes & Crematory, Ulysses, PA on Thursday, August 10, 2023 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM, with Funeral Services following at 4:00 PM.   Rev. Timothy H. Jeanne Claire Fritz Dostal was welcomed by the angels on Sunday June 25^th, 2023. 

She was born August 9, 1934, in St. Marys, PA, daughter of the late Theodore “Babe” and Elva Herzing Fritz.  She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1952.

She went on to attend Clarion University where she majored in Library Science.  While attending Clarion, she was the first president of the Newman Club, the Middle Atlantic Province where she taught leadership classes.   She was voted Miss Clarion in 1956 and was 2^nd in the Miss Pennsylvania competition that same year.   Jeanne graduated from Clarion University in 1956, earning her Bachelor of Science Degree in Library Science and English, as well as continuing her education at Millersville University.

She married Robert C. Dostal on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1958 in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. 

Carol Stewart Mead, 90, of Warren, PA, died Monday, August 7, 2023, at the John and Orpha Blair Hospice Home, Warren, PA., following a brief illness. 

She was born November 10, 1932, in Warren, PA.  She was the daughter of William “Pete” and Marion Tuttle Stewart.  Carol graduated from Warren High School, class of 1950 and was employed as a secretary at Pennsylvania Gas Company.  On October 28, 1950, she married Wyllis “Will” Mead, Jr., with whom she shared over seventy years of loving marriage.  She was a stay-at-home mom for their five children, after her children were raised, she worked as a secretary at the Penn State Cooperative Extension Office and the Watson Memorial Home.

Emily Y. CARY, 84, Westfield, PA, died Monday, August 7, 2023 in UPMC Williamsport.
