ONLINE REGISTRATION TO END AT NOON THIS COMING WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 13 FOR STEP OUTDOORS TRYATHLON & 5K RUN/WALK
Online registration will end at noon this coming Wednesday, Sept. 13 for the 15th Annual Step Outdoors TRYathlon and 5K Trail Run/Walk. To register online, visit www.stepoutdoors.org.
Most who register by Sept. 13 will also get a free event T-shirt. Extras are ordered and assigned to entrants based on the date they register.
Individuals who register online for the 5K Trail Run/Walk will pay a $25 entry fee; to do the three legs of the triathlon solo, a $30 entry fee; and to do the triathlon as a member of a two- or three-person team, a $65 entry fee. There is also a processing fee.
The TRYathlon & 5K Run/Walk will start at 10 a.m. next Saturday, Sept. 16, at Hills Creek State Park, 111 Spillway Road, seven miles northeast of Wellsboro in Charleston Township via Charleston Street and Hills Creek Lake Road.
Both check-in and in-person registration will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 16 in the tent between the park’s bathhouse and concession stand.
Kane Senior Citizens Expo Sept. 8, Causer Says
KANE – Rep. Martin Causer (R-Cameron/McKean/Potter) is reminding area seniors citizens and their family members and caregivers of the Kane Senior Citizens Expo coming up on
Friday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kane Community Center, 46 Fraley St., Kane.
“There are so many programs and services available to support our senior citizens, but it still can be difficult for people to find the help they need,” Causer said. “I hope area seniors will take advantage of the opportunity to gather a lot of helpful information in one place.”
The event is free to attend, and lunch will be provided. State, county and local exhibitors will be on hand to distribute information and answer questions about a variety of issues. Health screenings will also be offered, and door prize drawings will be held at 12:30 p.m.
Causer noted he will also hold another expo on Friday, Oct. 13, at the Roulette Fire Hall.
Due to the expo, Causer’s offices in Bradford and Kane will be closed all day on Friday, Sept. 8. The office in Coudersport will remain open and may be reached by calling 814-274-9769.

PPM Sinter Metals GKN Event

Elery Jon WALIZER, 74, of Pennsdale, PA, son of Elery H. and Carolyn Walizer of Ulysses, PA, passed away Friday, September 1, 2023 in his home.
On July 8, 1972, in the First Baptist Church of Ulysses, he married Charlinda A. Chapman.
Surviving are: his wife of over 51 years, Charlinda A. Chapman Collins; a son, Joseph G. Collins, a daughter, Melissa A. Green; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
A graduate of Lock Haven University, he was a computer specialist by trade.

She was born on December 20, 1932 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Edward and Matilda Lecker Gerg.
On March 13, 1952, in St. Marys Church, she married the late Richard “Dick” Krieg, who preceded her in death on August 23, 2018.
Alice was a lifelong resident of the area and graduate of Central High School. She was a member of the St. Marys Church and worked for a number of years at Windfall Products and the Pure Lodge. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking and gardening.

How many times do we encounter hearing impaired people and wish that we could communicate with them? As we age, we gradually lose some of our hearing. Sign language can help. Also, mothers of pre-lingual children can use sign language as a tool with their little ones. Here is your opportunity to learn basic sign language that could help you or someone you care about.
Basic Sign Language will cover beginning sign language, the alphabet, conversational phrases and a variety of commonly used signs. In addition, basic facts essential to the correct use of the language will be addressed. A dedicated student could learn as many as 800 signs and understand signing and interpreting rules, basic deaf culture, and medical situations that cause deafness and loss of hearing.

Wellsville Police arrested Kristopher R. Jablonski, age 29 of Wellsville, charging him with Criminal Contempt 2nd (Class A Misdemeanor) and Aggravated Family Offense (Class E Felony). The charges stem from an incident that took place on North Brooklyn Avenue. Jablonski was processed and arraigned before Wellsville Village Justice Thompson. Jablonski was committed to the Allegany County Jail on $1,000.00 cash bail or $2,000.00 property bond or $10,000.00 partially secured bond. Jablonski is due back in Wellsville Village Court on September 19th at 4:30 pm.

Wellsville Police arrested Amy L. Petrillo, age 44, of Wellsville, charging her with Attempted Assault 3rd (Class A Misdemeanor). The charge stems from an incident that took place on North Main Street. Petrillo was processed and arraigned before Wellsville Village Justice Thompson. Petrillo was released and is due back in Wellsville Village Court on September 12th at 4:30 pm.
Liberty, Morris Dispatched for MVA
At 5:20 PM on Tuesday, Liberty Fire & Morris ambulance have been dispatched to Route 414 westbound near a large farm for a vehicle crashed into the ditch. Second caller reports possibly no injuries. All occupants are out of the vehicle. A engine oil spill on the roadway may be the cause of this crash. Two vehicles are involved. No injuries. PennDOT notified.
Hearing On Potter County’s Block Grant Spending Plan
Potter County has been awarded federal funds this year under the decades-old Community Development Block Grant program. Next in a series of public hearings on the 2023 CDBG distribution plan will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, Sept. 7, in the F. W. Gunzburger County Office Building auditorium.
Potter County Commissioners Nancy Grupp, Barry Hayman and Paul Heimel will decide how the funds will be expended, based on qualifying criteria provided by the Pa. Dept. of Community and Economic Development. In recent years, bulk of the funds have been awarded to boroughs or townships seeking financial help for large-scale water or sewage treatment projects. To be eligible, projects must meet one or more of three objectives: benefit low- and moderate-income persons; prevent or eliminate slums or blight; and/or alleviate immediate threats to health and safety.
The commissioners maintain a three-year community development plan to assist them in decisions for each year’s allocations. This year’s blueprint calls for grants of $182,000 to Austin Borough to upgrade its water treatment plant and acquire and install a back-up power generator. Following the Sept. 7 hearing, the county will prepare its final grant application which must be submitted to DCED no later than Oct. 27.

Floyd D. Williams, 78, formerly of 2544 Route 275, Richburg, NY passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at Wellsville Manor Care Center after a lengthy illness.
Born on April 22, 1945, in Little Genesee, he was a son of Claude and Dorothy Emerson Williams.
Floyd had worked for various gas stations in the Bolivar area. He then worked in the disposal business for Cliff Gates, Brad Sexton, and Jim Barnes. He later worked for Neu Disposal and retired from SDS Disposal in Olean.

Dianne M. Hequembourg Emmons, 80, of Elma, and formerly of Lyndon and Cuba, NY passed away Thursday (Aug. 31, 2023) at Hospice of Buffalo, after a brave fight with ovarian cancer.
Born Sept. 25, 1942, in Cuba, she was the daughter of Lindsey A. and Helen M. Greene Gross. On Nov. 19, 1966, in the Cuba First Baptist Church, she married Donald E. Hequembourg, who predeceased her Jan. 23, 1995. She later married Sidney L. Emmons on Dec. 16, 2006, who survives.
Dianne was a graduate of Cuba Central School Class of 1961.

Eloise was born in Osceola, PA on June 2, 1923 to Nelson and Agnes (Starr) Brass. She was Miss Knoxville at one of the first Laurel Festivals in Wellsboro, PA and was a member in the Order of the Eastern Star for many years.
On December 7, 1942 in Knoxville she married Richard Kelts. They were married for nearly 78 years and lived together on the Boatman Road farm their entire lives.
In the mid-1960’s, Eloise went back to school at Mansfield College, graduated and became an elementary school librarian and 4th grade teacher until she retired 18 years later.

September is National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month and it’s important to not shy away from conversations about one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. In 2021, almost 50,000 deaths in the United States were due to suicide. Attempts and thoughts about suicide have even higher numbers; 12.3 million American adults thought seriously about suicide, 3.5 million planned an attempt, and 1.7 million have made an attempt to take their lives according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Suicide can be preventable, and everyone can share in the responsibility to help save lives and foster strong and healthy communities.

UPMC Cole Planning Emergency Preparedness Exercise for Sept. 19
COUDERSPORT, PA., Sept. 5, 2023 – UPMC is coordinating an emergency preparedness training exercise scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 19 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot located near the Emergency Department at UPMC Cole, 1001 E. 2nd St., Coudersport.
The exercise is part of UPMC’s emergency preparedness planning. During the exercise, staff from UPMC will set up decontamination tents and other equipment used for HAZMAT and mass casualty response. Please be advised, this is only a training. Please do not be alarmed.
