BRADFORD, Pa. – Colorado’s Watson Institute is in Bradford this week teaching students at Bradford Area High School and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford about social entrepreneurship as part of the Bradford Area Alliance’s Entrepreneurship Week.
The week began and will end with sessions for students underwritten by the Halloran Foundation. Thursday featured the Alliance’s Harvey L. Golubock Business Competition pitch event.
Earlier this week, Watson facilitator Marte Siebenhar led a workshop of juniors and seniors at BAHS. Siebenhar told students that entrepreneurship means finding a need and filling it and that it does not necessarily mean inventing something or starting a business, although, of course, it can.
Using that definition, Siebenhar walked through exercises to see how they already act in entrepreneurial ways, what a societal need is that concerns them and how interconnected those problems can be.
“This work is very layered and very nuanced,” Siebenhar said. She also talked with students about developing their natural talents and passions to find career success.
Over the weekend, Watson Institute will work with Pitt-Bradford students to model entrepreneurial processes. Thirty students will spend the weekend alongside mentors who are Pitt-Bradford alumni and members of the Bradford business community.
On Friday, Pitt-Bradford students visited America Refining Group to ask questions about its business model before discussing the types of problems they see in the community, conducting a Root Cause analysis and proposing a prototype solution.
Throughout the weekend, students will learn about business models, craft a mock pitch, workshop their ideas with local mentors, and hear from Pitt-Bradford alumnus Kamron Khodjaev ’12-’15, co-founder of KOOP Technologies, an insurance technology company for autonomous vehicles and robotics based in Pittsburgh.
This is the second year Pitt-Bradford has hosted the Watson Institute. It is the first year for the high school portion of the visit, both sponsored by the Halloran Foundation. Many of those serving as mentors have returned from last year.
The weekend ends Sunday with a pitch competition and the awarding of $150 gift cards for members of the winning team.

The Redding Endowment Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation recently provided for three annual grants to support the third grade classrooms at Hinsdale Central School and East View Elementary as well as the Hinsdale Maplehurst & Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Department.
This year’s grants together totaled $1,389.80.
The $429.93 to Hinsdale Central School will be utilized to purchase various supplies to supplement studies in science, technology, engineering and music development, said third grade teacher Ms. Christine Goodling.
“We are also working on team building, work ethic, and interactions with our local community,” said Goodling. “We are providing rewards to students who show positive character traits including perseverance, hard work, and empathy. We will be teaching our students about cultures around the world and how they compare and contrast to our culture by purchasing items unique to each country to provide a hands-on experience.”
Established by Dennis Redding of Hinsdale, the fund provides support each year to causes loved by the Redding family. In the past, Redding helped as a tutor in third grade classrooms in Hinsdale and East View Elementary.
East View Elementary also received a grant of $429.93, which will be utilized to put on a book bingo event.
The school plans to partner with Raymour and Flanigan, who will host the event for school families to attend and play games of bingo, with the prizes being new books.
The grant will help offset the cost of book purchases.
“We did this [program] a few years ago, and it was wildly successful,” said East View Principal Brian Crawford. “The kids lit up when they got to go to the prize table to get a new book.”
The Hinsdale Maplehurst & Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Department received a grant of $429.94.
Donations can be made to the Redding Endowment Fund at CRCF, 301 North Union St., Suite 203 or online at cattfoundation.org.

Well, That Didn’t Work
By
B.J. Knefley
The other day I was installing a new garage door opener for my garage. After several days of work, searching the internet and rereading the manual, I could not for the life of me get it to work. I even called tech support and still couldn’t fix the problem. They did indicate that the problem might be in the circuit board. I got so frustrated I went and bought a brand new one just in case I had to swap the unit out. Finally in desperation I called my son-in-law. (Should have done that first.)
Within five minutes of his arrival, he had it running. What was wrong? What did he do that I hadn’t? I soon learned that it needed to be programmed. What? It’s a garage door, why does it need to be programmed? I’ve put in several openers over the years, and I had never had to do that. Well guess what? You do now. What was I thinking?
The problem for all of us, we all can fall into the situation where we don’t think through a situation or action. Thinking we know, we forage forward only to realize that we’re on a course that’s not going to be profitable. People do it all the time with all sorts of things. Some of those, in the scheme of eternity don’t mean much. But in the area of faith can have far reaching consequences.
I can’t tell you how many times that I’ve heard people talk about the things related to faith. Their ideas seem to be having been pulled out of never never land. The basis for their statements has no backing in anything other than what seems good to them. Interestingly, Isaiah prophesied, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands of God.” (Is a 29:13) I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t want to be scratching my head asking, “Well that didn’t work”, when I reach the end of my life. The time to get right on faith is now. Think about it.
