Harrisburg, PA – Pennsylvania State Police today announced the number of firearms purchase denials and subsequent investigations for the third quarter of 2023.
The Pennsylvania Instant Check System (PICS) is used by county sheriffs, police chiefs of first-class cities, and licensed firearms dealers to determine an individual’s legal ability to acquire a license to carry firearms or obtain a firearm through a purchase or transfer. When an individual attempts to provide false information on a state and/or federal form, an investigation is initiated, and an investigation referral is sent to a law enforcement agency.
According to Pennsylvania law, a person commits a third-degree felony if they make a false oral or written statement on any federal or state agency form or willfully presents false identification that is likely to deceive the seller, licensed dealer, or licensed manufacturer. During the PICS process, some individuals are identified as having an active warrant for their arrest.
In the third quarter, the following investigations were initiated by the PSP Firearms Division and referred to PSP Troops, municipal police departments, or ATF for further investigation and possible prosecution.

BRADFORD, Pa. – National Fuel and Seneca Resources have endowed a new scholarship to benefit energy and engineering students at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
The National Fuel Gas Company Foundation made a gift of $25,000 to create the National Fuel and Seneca Resources Scholarship in honor of the natural gas utility and its exploration and production company, Seneca Resources.
Students studying petroleum technology or engineering at Pitt-Bradford will be given first preference for the scholarships. Second preference will be given to students majoring in other energy-related disciplines or children of current employees who are attending Pitt-Bradford.

With a 10-1-7 overall season entering the playoffs, this year’s Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s soccer team already has established itself as one of the program’s best ever, and as the third seed in the United East Volt Division, the Wildcats will host sixth-seeded Penn State Abington at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Penn State Berks, with a win over Penn State Harrisburg on Tuesday, nailed down the Volt Division’s top seed while Harrisburg is seeded second. Lancaster Bible College earned the third seed and St. Mary’s (Md.) College is seeded fourth. Berks and Harrisburg drew first-round byes and will host semifinal games next Tuesday.
Last season, the Wildcats reached the conference’s Final Four before losing to Penn State Harrisburg, 3-2.
In conference matches this season, Penn College is 2-1-2 against other playoff teams with 0-0 ties against Berks and St. Mary’s, a 1-0 loss to Harrisburg, a 3-1 win over Lancaster Bible and a 6-2 win over Abington. The Wildcats have outscored their UE opponents 9-4.
“This season has been one of incredible excitement for our team and program as a whole,” second-year coach Ian Scheller said. “To end any regular season with just one loss is a great achievement because being a team that can consistently compete on any given day might be the most important thing for any program.

Dept 6,5,25,26 and Wellsboro hospital medics dispatched for a tractor-trailer accident on its side possible entrapment. Lieutenant 6(Seth Davies)got on the scene reporting the tractor-trailer was on its side, the roadway was partially blocked and the patient self-extricated.
Chief 5(Bill Goltz)got on the scene and established command with updated information of minor injuries to the patient. Rescue 6-8 and Chief 6-20 arrived on scene and Chief 5 turned command over to Chief 6-20.
There was some minor diesel fluid leaking from the tanks on the tractor and crews from dept 5 and 6 began to asses the situation and use absorbent pads. Crews also disconnected the battery. We also deployed a trash line for a precaution. Dept 5 also responded with Hazmat 99 as a precaution as well.
Command shut down 249 due to the location on the blind curve and due to the extensive investigation. 26-7 transported the patient to the hospital. B & W Towing and Whites Towing arrived on the scene to begin the recovery. Lot of agencies involved to respond, mitigate, and clean up such an incident and everyone worked together to get the job done.
Units responding were: Rescue 6-8, Engine 6-2, Squad 5-18, Engine 5-3, Hazmat 99-3, 26-7, Wellsboro hospital medics(Recalled), PSP, DOT, Whites Towing, and B & W Towing
BRADFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s Financial Aid staff will offer free financial aid information sessions for college-bound students.
The in-person financial aid presentations at regional high schools will begin over the next several weeks and conclude in early November 2023. The schedule is as follows:
6 p.m. Oct. 26 Kane Area High School
6 p.m. Nov. 2 Austin Area School
6 p.m. Nov. 2 Coudersport Area Jr.-Sr. High School
9 a.m. Nov. 4 Otto-Eldred High School hosting Smethport and Oswayo Valley Area High Schools
6 p.m. Nov. 9 Bradford Area High School
Information covered will include basic information on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), deadlines, and tips that will make completing the FAFSA easier. A counselor will also talk about the financial aid process for both federal and state aid. Finally, the counselor will talk about different situations that can affect aid, such as income and whether a student is considered a dependent or independent student. There will be time for questions during or after the presentation.
In January 2024, the Financial Aid staff will offer a series of FAFSA completion events. More information will be forthcoming once dates and locations are set.

Rocco Camas, Jr., 81, of 74 Fiske Avenue, Bradford, PA passed away Monday, October 23, at Erie County Medical Center.

Sherry Ann CORNEBY, 73, of Genesee, PA, died Tuesday, October 24, 2023 in her home after a two-year battle with severe diabetes and kidney disease.
Born October 30, 1949, in Reading, she was the daughter of Robert A. and Dorris M. Dinkle Steinmetz.
A 1967 graduate of Governor Mifflin Senior High School in Shillington, she earned a bachelor’s degree in German and secondary education from Mansfield University in 1971, and later earned a master’s degree while teaching at Whitesville Central School.
Drowsy Maggie is performing at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 27, in the Coolidge Theatre at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts at 104 Main Street in Wellsboro.
In the band are: Danny Shipe and Molly Cary, both lead and harmony vocalists with Cary on guitar and Shipe on guitar and banjo; Daria Lin-Guelig on hammered dulcimer and concertina; Bruce Smith on upright bass; and Dave Driskell on flute, clarinet and whistle.
A new record was set in the Sinnemahone 50k on Saturday. Bobby Longenecker from Lititz finished the race in 4:50:43. He was one of two competitors taking home the gold crown of the Sinnemahone Triple Crown. Longenecker finished third in the 55-mile gravel bike race and finished third in the Bob Umbenhauer race of the Sinnemahone Paddle. Hansel Lucas from Brookville also completed the longest distance in each of the legs of the Sinnemahone Triple Crown.
