Some might remember the days in school when learning to diagram sentences was common. Every part of a sentence was identified, including the subject, verb, adverbs, and adjectives. The subject was always considered the most important part because it explains what the action is about. Sometimes in life we realize we can overlook the subject and only focus on the action. In other words we can become so caught up in what we are doing that we forget why we are doing it. All professions face the risk of focusing on the task and forgetting why or who we are doing it for. Church can be similar. We can become so absorbed in ministry that we forget about the one whom the ministry is meant to serve. 

Troy A. Pease            “beloved son, brother, grandson, uncle and friend”

Troy A. Pease, 29, of Shinglehouse, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 29, 2025, in the Olean General Hospital, Olean, NY.

Born on Tuesday, October 24, 1995 in Coudersport, he was a son of Shane A. Pease and Sheila M. Gross Hathaway.

Troy was a graduate of Oswayo Valley High School in Shinglehouse. He was formerly employed by Norton’s Building Supply in Shinglehouse. He had also been employed for Clara Township and had served on the Clara Township Election Board. He was beloved by his customers whom he did yard work and landscaping.

Bradford, PA — A beloved childhood tradition is getting a grown-up twist this fall. The United Way of the Bradford Area and On the Side Books are teaming up to host the Boozy Book Fair on Saturday, September 6, from 6–8 p.m. at On the Side Books, with proceeds benefiting both the Bradford Area Public Library and the United Way’s Annual Campaign, “A Century of Service – 100 Years United.”

Johnsonburg, Pa.:  Bryan Uhl and his son Kohlson harvested three coyotes on Friday and Sunday in southern Elk County while hunting both private and public lands.  On Friday at 2:00 a.m. they harvested a 30.4# male coyote.  On Sunday at 1:30 a.m. at their first stand they harvested a 16.8# female coyote.  On their last stand of the morning at 2:45 a.m. they were able to call in a 28.2# female coyote to harvest.

Weigh-in is at 6:00 p.m. every day over the ten days of the Rolfe Beagle Club hunt, thru 9/6.  Hunters are reminded that Rolfe Beagle Club’s Predator Hunt or Trap will take place over two weekends in February.

Last week’s hometown highlights: Three second-half goals, with Olivia Casella of South Williamsport scoring once and assisting on another, lifted Penn College to its first win, 3-0 on Friday, after three lifetime losses against Alfred University. Freshman goalie Taylor Brownback of Birdsboro made two saves in earning the shutout. Scoreless into the 67^th minute on Sunday at Alfred State College, the Wildcats scored twice late for their win and improved to 5-0-1 lifetime against ASC. Brooke Klinger of Herndon tallied the game-winning goal, while Brownback had three saves and recorded her second shutout.

Last season: 4-10 overall, 3-5 all United East, 3-4 UE regular season.

Outlook: “We got pretty decimated,” Straub said of the squad that lost its Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6 singles players and will build around Shuler, who remains No. 1, and Ogden, No. 4 in the spring and now No. 2. Also, Hawk is expected to step into the starting lineup immediately.

“I look for the players to jell, and have at least a .500 fall season,” Straub said.Inside the UE: Penn State Harrisburg is the two-time defending champion. Eight teams compete in the spring conference season.

Galeton had a very dry month. Most mornings started out in the 40’s and 50’s. There were however, a few 60 degree mornings and two mornings in the high 30’s. We had many clear sunny days. Pine Creek and Berger Lake are very low. There is a little Fall-like feeling in the air as we close out the month.

Last year we had near record rainfall at 10.25″.  This year we received 1.10″ That reading is the driest since 1968. We heard thunder on 3 days but no storms. We had 11 foggy mornings.

I am sure everyone has noticed that for the most part the green grass has turned tan or brown however the lawn mowers and tractors are still mowing. Brown grass looks good when it is cut short. We can’t stop mowing but it is almost time to stop.
