State Police Announce Fourth Quarter Firearms Purchase Denial Investigations

Harrisburg, PA – ThePennsylvania State Police announced the Pennsylvania Instant Check System (PICS) conducted 321,664 background checks during the fourth quarter, which was the second highest quarter of the year. In addition, the state police released the number of firearms purchase denials, subsequent investigations, and arrests that resulted from investigations for the fourth quarter of 2022.

Established in July 1998, PICS is used by county sheriffs, chiefs of police of cities of the first class, and licensed firearms dealers in Pennsylvania to determine an individual’s legal ability to acquire a license to carry firearms or obtain a firearm through a purchase or transfer.

Throughout 2022, the state police firearms administrative section processed 916,709 total (521,737 handguns; 364,236 long guns; and 30,736 frames and receivers) firearmspurchases and/or transfers facilitated by Federal Firearms Licensed dealers.

On Friday, January 6, 2023 at 10:15 PM surrounded by family, our precious husband and dad, Eugene N. “Gene” MILLER, ran into heaven.  

Friends may call Thursday, January 12, 2023 from 1:00 – 3:00 and 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Yorks Corners Mennonite Church, 3350 County Road 29, Wellsville, NY, where Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 1:00 PM.  Co-pastor Matt Havens will officiate.  Burial will be in Yorks Corners Cemetery.

Mark R. Wachob, 83, of Wilcox, PA.

Mark R. Wachob, 83, of Wilcox, died on Monday, January 9, 2023, at Jefferson Manor Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

He was born on July 13, 1939, Henderson Twp, a son of the late Mark and Elva Reed Wachob.

On October 20, 1962, he married Peggy Pifer who survives.

Mark was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Wilcox and a graduate of Sykesville – Henderson High School. After graduating from high school, Mark joined the U.S Army serving from 1960 to 1963. He worked at Sylvania and retired after 37 years of service. He loved to hunt rabbits with his dog and was member of the Rolfe Beagle Club. Mark spent his free time hunting, fishing, and  woodworking.

In addition to his loving wife of 60 years, he is survived by 4 daughters; Janet Gay and her husband W.R of Richmond, VA, Monica Martin and her husband Sheldon of Stowe, PA, Dorrie Wachob and her boyfriend Dan Wonderling of Johnsonburg, and Courtney Fleming and her husband Scott of St. Marys, 8 grandchildren; Kirk, and Anthony Martin, Nathaniel and Mason Krise, Emma Gay, Reed and Ruby Fleming, and 2 great-grandchildren, Booker and Peyton Martin. He is also survived by 5 brothers; Dorsey (Katherine) Wachob of Punxsutawney, Melvin (Donna) Wachob of Reynoldsville, Earl (Linda) Wachob of Ridgway, Boyd Wachob of Reynoldsville and Paul Wachob of Reynoldsville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nora Beck.

A Memorial Service for Mark R. Wachob will be celebrated on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at 11:00AM at the Nazareth Lutheran Church, 252 Kane Street, Wilcox PA 15870.

MCKEAN COUNTY CHIEF CLERK

McKean County is seeking qualified and highly motivated applicants to perform the duties of Chief Clerk. The Chief Clerk will provide clerical and administrative support to the Commissioners by supervising the activities of the County Commissioners Office on a daily basis.  

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervise operations of Commissioner’s office, including preparation for meetings and minutes.
  • Prepare advertising, bidding projects, correspondence as required.
  • Monitor grants.
  • Maintain accounting records and prepare a schedule of receipts for County audits.
  • Maintain all lease agreements for County.
  • Directs and coordinates County’s property, casualty, and liability insurance policies, and monitors the status and payment of claims.
  • Distribute property tax levy forms to municipalities.
  • Track all agreements and contracts.
  • Distribute ethics and financial statements to all County employees and elected officials.
  • Act as the County’s Right to Know Officer and Public Information Officer.
  • Reviews correspondence, reports, news sources or publications and informs Commissioners of subsequent development and/or problems.
  • Collects, interprets, analyzes and summarizes information to be used as a basis for the executive actions of the Commissioners.
  • Communicates with County officials, offices, news media and general public on behalf of the Board of Commissioners.
  • Directs and coordinates all matters of importance for the Commissioners.
  • Multiple other duties as assigned.

Requirements include:

  • Must possess highly developed communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to use these skills both written and orally in a public setting as well as to promote the understanding of complex issues among the Commissioners.
  • Must be a self-starter with integrity, initiative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such actions.
  • Ability to multi-task with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Executes and enforces all policies, ordinances, regulations, and operational matters under the leadership of the Board of Commissioners in order to comply with statutory and governmental laws, and to provide the most effective and efficient services to constituents.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and education preferred.  
  • Public and/or private sector senior management experience preferred.

Gale Foundation, PA Route 6 Alliance and ECCOTA Plan Mural to Honor Author

In conjunction with PA Route 6 Alliance and the Elk County Council on the Arts (ECCOTA), the Gale Foundation is sponsoring the creation of a mural in the Heritage Community of Galeton to pay tribute to author Jim Kjelgaard. The mural project is set to begin later this month and will reside on the wall of Galeton Hardware on West Street in Galeton.

“The Gale Foundation is funding the project to pursue several objectives,” says Michael Callahan, Gale Foundation board member. “One is to emphasize the crucial role that reading should play in everyday life. Another is to stimulate an interest in local history and those who have contributed to it.”

Jim Kjelgaard, who wrote books for children and young adults, grew up in Galeton and graduated from Galeton High School in 1928. Kjelgaard published his first pieces of writing while living in Galeton, launching a career that would result in more than 40 published books, including Big Red in 1945, which later became a Walt Disney film of the same name. He received numerous awards for his works, including the Boy’s Club Award in 1948, the Spur Award from the Western Writers of American in 1958, and the Boy’s Life Award in 1959.

Randon L. Moore, 59, of Walnut St. in Kane,

Randon L. Moore, 59, of Walnut St. in Kane, passed away Sunday (Jan. 8) at his residence.  He was born on April 23, 1963 in Brookville, the son of Naomi “Jean” (Allshouse) Moore and the late Norris Moore.  On July 18, 2009, he married Vernie Gadley, who survives.

Mr. Moore had been a self employed logger earlier in his life and then worked for several local lumber companies until his health forced his retirement.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by one daughter, Jennifer Moore of Kane; one son, Daniel (Jenya) Moore of Strattanville; two nephews, Joshua (Ashlie) Moore of Kane and Patrick Moore of Pittsburgh; one niece, Christina Moore of Pittsburgh; two granddaughters, Anyssa and Ava Feronti; and four stepsons, Ed Gadley, TJ Feronti, Dustin Feronti and Gage Feronti. He is preceded in death by his father Norris Moore, Sr. and his brother Norris “Tink” Moore, Jr. 

Friends are invited to a visitation, which will take place at the Cummings Funeral Home on Friday (Jan. 13) from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Toni Jeanne (Holmes) Bean, 69, of Welsh St. in Kane, PA.

Toni Jeanne (Holmes) Bean, 69, of Welsh St. in Kane, passed away Sunday (Jan. 8) at her residence following a lengthy illness.  She was born on Oct.  6, 1953 in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of the late Gerald and Olive (Wendleburg) Holmes.

Mrs. Bean worked as a certified nursing assistant at the Lutheran Home at Kane for over 22 years.  She will be sadly missed by her family.

She is survived by one daughter, Lisa Holmes of Kane; one two sons, Kenneth and Justin Holmes, both of Kane; four brothers, Kenneth Holmes of Kane, Scott Holmes of Texas, Francis Holmes of Warren and Richard Holmes of Warren and sister in-law Paula Holmes.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister Gerry Lynn Holmes.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service, which will take place at the Cummings Funeral Home on Monday (Jan. 16) at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Calvin Cook officiating.  Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Terry Lupole, 60, of Park Ave. in Kane, PA.

Terry Lupole, 60, of Park Ave. in Kane, passed away Friday (Jan. 6) at UPMC-Hamot.  He was born on April 26, 1962 in Kane, the son of Bevery (Taylor) Lupole and the late Robert Lupole.  On Sep 22, 2001 in Kane he married Betsy Edinger, who survives.

Terry served in the US Army for five years.  He then worked at Kane Magnetics and then Temple-Inland.  He was a past member of the Kane Elks Lodge #329 and a current member of the Kane VFW Lodge 1132.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Kayla Lupole of Kane; one grandson, Dallas Lupole of Kane and three brothers, Allen Lupole, Bob Lupole and Scott (Sheila) Lupole all of Kane.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday (Jan. 14) at 11:00 a.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home, with the Rev. Cam Mealy officiating.

Amy R. Hoffman, 34, of Edinboro, PA, formerly of Port Allegany, PA.

Amy R. Hoffman, 34, of Edinboro, PA, formerly of Port Allegany, passed away unexpectedly Saturday (Jan. 7, 2023) in Edinboro, PA.

Born December 20, 1988, in Olean, NY, she was a daughter of Ralph E. and Carol Lute Hoffman.  

She was a graduate of Port Allegany High School, class of 2007, and Full Sail University, Winter Park, FL, with a BS in Journalism.  

Amy was a customer service representative for Disabled Veterans Solutions of Erie, PA. 

She was an avid reader & writer of short stories. She enjoyed music, cooking, and traveling to places like Los Angeles, CA or New York City, NY, but most of all she loved her nieces and nephews. 

She was a strong willed, brave, sophisticated, and intelligent person who will be missed by many.

Surviving in addition to her father, Ralph Hoffman of Port Allegany, are two brothers, Ralph E. (Rebecca) Hoffman, Jr. of North Augusta, SC, Dustin A. (Olivia) Hoffman of Ulysses, PA; six sisters, Brianna L. (Anthony Hatzell) Hoffman of Portville, NY, Sarna R. (Anthony) Wiley of Port Allegany, Angela M. (Nathan) Kio of Fairview, PA, Barbara A. (Thomas Bennett) Hoffman of Roulette, Michelle E. (Camron) Haggard of Gulfport, MS, and Rebeccah J. (Travis) Mix of Port Allegany.

She was preceded in death by her mother Carol Hoffman.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.
