Melvin R. “Dick” Johnston Sr., 86, of Hedgehog Lane, Bradford, passed away Saturday February 8, 2025, while at home, with his family by his side.
Born August 23, 1938, in Hornell, NY, he was a son of the late James and Violet (Grimes) Johnston.
Dick formerly worked at Owens Illinois and Charlie Schneider Service Station, and Bradford Air Cargo. Prior to retiring he worked for Paul Smith & Son as a mail truck driver delivering to and from the Pittsburgh area.
Dick was an avid hunter, fisherman, and the life of the party. He was a former member of the Eagles Club.
Surviving is one daughter, Betty Hendryx, his companion of 18 years, Carol Collins, five grandsons, Christopher Johnston, Michael Johnston, Brandon (Brandon) Nye, Jeremiah Himes, Joshua (Denette) Himes, and two granddaughters Joanna Hendryx and Jennifer Henry and 11 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Jean Perry, and Christine Bailey, and several nieces and nephews including Pat Johnston who has been a true blessing in these trying times.
In addition to family, Dick had a special bond with Bill, Shelly and Will Hokensen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Barbara G. Johnston, one daughter, Darlene Ferro, one son, Melvin R. “Rick” Johnston Jr., one sister and four brothers.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday February 11, 2025, from 4 pm to 6 pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc. 33 South Ave., and again from 10 am to 11 am at which time funeral services will be held with Rev. Matthew McDonald, Pastor of New Life Fellowship Church, officiating. Burial will be in Willow Dale Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc.
