Derrick City Volunteer Fire Department and Bradford City Fire Department And Ambulance Assist In A Water Rescue In Tunungwant Creek Off Rt. 219 Exit Ramp

District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer recognizes volunteer firefighters: “McKean County has a significant number of volunteer firefighters who respond to life and death situations.  Just this week, Pennsylvania proclaimed this week Firefighter Recognition Week.  Our volunteers have stepped up to take on this role out of a sense of duty to their families, neighbors and communities.  Funding for these departments is lacking and recruitment is difficult. 

Even obtaining proper equipment is an obstacle. Despite every incentive otherwise, these men and women continue in their efforts.  This day is a good time to reflect on how each of us can help these departments – can each of us volunteer or donate or start a fundraising campaign on behalf of our local department? Can we urge our politicians to find funding streams to ensure proper equipment including proper gear and radios?  And can we recognize and thank them for responding to the calls?   Several times each week there are articles in local papers or social media posts about that week’s calls and, in each article, there are pictures that paint a small portion of what they face – life and death situations.  Life and death situations faced by volunteers who have stepped up for their communities.   On behalf of the McKean County District Attorney’s Office, I thank our volunteers across McKean County and in neighboring counties.”

Mr. Miller, Building Construction Occupations instructor, proudly recognizes Trey Kiser from Port Allegany High School, as one of this month’s “Student of the Week”!

Trey stands out as a focused, hardworking student with clear goals and a strong sense of responsibility. He lives with his mom, Sonja, and brothers, Tristan and Alec, and credits family support for keeping him grounded and motivated.

After high school, Trey plans to continue serving in the Army Reserves and eventually move into Active Duty—a reflection of his discipline and dedication. In addition to his studies, Trey competes in soccer and track and field, showing strong commitment both in the classroom and on the field.

When asked about the Building Construction program, Trey shared: “I get to learn things helpful for working on my own projects and things that will help me be more independent after school.”

This year, he’s most proud of staying on top of his grades and completing work efficiently proving that consistency and effort pay off.

His advice to new students? “Just do everything to the best of your ability. You aren’t in here to be around your friends,

but instead to learn things you can use in the future.”

Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC), a Kaleida Health facility, has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology® (ACR®). Mammography is a specific type of imaging test that uses a low-dose X-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting specific requirements based on ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported back to the facility and provide the practice with a comprehensive report that can be used for continuous practice improvement.

TIONESTA – Northern Pennsylvania Regional College (NPRC) and CNB Wagner Enterprise, LLC are partnering to help fulfill the need for more commercial driver’s licensed (CDL) drivers. Classes for CDL Class A licenses will be held at CNB Wagner’s range located in Forest County at 727 Route 36 in Tionesta. The cost of the program is estimated at $4,625.00, which includes the cost of the course fees. Additional costs will be associated with obtaining the Class A permit issued through PennDOT.

Lane Restriction Next Week on Route 220 SB in Woodward Township, Lycoming County
Montoursville, PA – Motorists are advised of a lane restriction next week on Route 220 southbound in Woodward Township, Lycoming County, for a road maintenance project.

On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) maintenance crew will be milling and patching Route 220 southbound between west of Northway Road and Dome Lane.  Motorists can expect the right (driving) lane to be restricted where work is being performed. Work will be performed between the hours of 7:00 AM and 2:00 PM, weather permitting.

Motorists should be alert, slow down, expect delays in travel, and drive with caution through the work zone.

The legacy of Lorna Thornbury, a devoted educator and lifelong advocate for children and families in the Olean community, will continue to shape young lives through the newly established Lorna J. Thornbury Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

The Lorna J. Thornbury Memorial Scholarship Fund was created by her family and loved ones to honor her extraordinary life, career and lasting contributions to early childhood education and the Olean community. The fund will provide an annual scholarship support to graduating seniors of Olean High School who plan to pursue higher education in fields aligned with Thornbury’s values and passions: education, healthcare and the social sciences.
