The Backpack program is now accepting requests for backpacks
The Backpack program is now accepting requests for backpacks that will be distributed the week between August 12th and August 26th. We ask that all requests for backpacks go through our request form. Please fill in all the information requested so that we are sure to be able to get a hold of you when the backpacks are ready.

We will be distributing the backpacks at noted locations and times the once the distribution starts. If you are unable to make it during those times to pick up your backpack, please make arrangements to have a family member or friend pick them up. Distributing the backpacks as we have in the past is a very time-consuming adventure and to keep it easy, we will distribute in each town at a certain time. We will no longer distribute backpacks during work hours as it interferes with my job and we ask that you do not stop at my workplace to request backpacks.
Please note…we are only distributing in Bradford, Cameron, Lycoming, McKean, Potter and Tioga counties. We do not distribute outside those counties at this time so please do not request a backpack if you are outside of our distribution area. There are no guidelines to request a backpack but we do ask that you do not request one just because it is free. We want to be sure that everyone that “needs” a backpack is able to get one. Those who request one and don’t really need it could possibly delay another from starting school with a new backpack because we need to wait for an order to arrive to be able to complete all the requests.
We will be packing backpacks at our storage shed on August 5th at 10am. Anyone that would like to help please try to be there by 10am. Anyone that requests a backpack and wants to pick it up that day is more than welcome to stop between 11am and Noon. By that time, we should have enough packed to be able to fill your request. If you did not request a backpack prior to the packing date we will need to wait until all previous requests are filled before we can complete your request. We are not saying that you will not get a backpack, we just need to take care of the prior requests first and then work on the late requests after those orders are filled.
Anyone that would like to donate items to the Backpack program we will gladly accept them at any time. We have modified our list to be able to limit the amount of space needed to store items but to still be beneficial to the children receiving the backpacks. Our list of suggested items includes #2 yellow pencils, 1 subject notebooks, small pencil sharpeners, colored pencils, pencil cap erasers, 2 pocket portfolios, travel pack Kleenex and rulers. We ask that you please avoid gender specific items whenever possible. What is truth? From the time we get up in the morning to the time we go to bed at night we are bombarded with information that is seemingly true. Truth, or things that seem to be true come at us through social media, news outlets and a host of other ways too numerous to mention. I remember a time when the evening news was presented as “All the news you needed to hear”. Today news is big business and you can watch it 24/7.
I read something on social media the other day that seemed to be true and I wanted to share it, unfortunately I couldn’t verify its truthfulness. Yet that didn’t stop a lot of others from sharing it, and that’s part of the problem. We share what we think is true and what we think is often no more than opinion, and opinions have a great deal of influence over individuals and society.
We live in a time when image is everything. For example, people generally present a positive image on social media. They’re on vacation, enjoying great scenery and company. In fact, if you look at their posts, you’re bound to wonder why their life is so great while yours is so dull? Not many people show the ugly parts of their life, only the good. Remember, opinions are interpretations of what we’ve seen, heard and touched. By this we can conclude many things to be true only to have them be proven false under closer scrutiny.
A number of years ago Josh McDonald wrote a book called “Evidence That Demands a Verdict”, in it he presents evidence for the truthfulness of the Bible. Although it’s been years since I read it, I am reminded how it challenged many opinions that I had about the Bible and God. I realized that truth isn’t always convenient. In fact, sometimes it’s very annoying. Perhaps that’s part of the problem, we like convenient truth. Truth that makes us feel good about ourselves and gives the false image that we’re important and significant. Perhaps we have learned to hide behind a mask. Just because we believe something doesn’t make it true. Truth will not always make you feel warm and fuzzy, sometimes it will hurt. Think about it.

Phillip W. Richardson, 62, of Bradford, passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at the Olean General Hospital, Olean, NY.
He was born on August 20, 1960 in Bradford, the son of the late Doris G. Sheridan McMillen.
Phillip was a hardworking father who dearly loved his family and his girlfriend, Mellany.
He is survived by five children, Jeremy Richardson, Jill Richardson, Christy Moonan, Cherra Richardson and Heath Moonan; two sisters, Darlene Anderson and Marlene Buchanan; girlfriend, Mellany Silvis and twenty-two grandchildren.
A private celebration of his life will be held at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Mascho Funeral Home, Inc.

On February 10, 1968, in Johnsonburg, PA, he married Catherine “Kitty” Kearney Merritt, who survives. Together they shared more than 55 years of love and laughter.

My two girls and their two friends were just targeted by an old man in a white truck with a grey cap on the back and grey tailgate, wearing a red flannel and overalls and a long grey beard at shop n save in Coudersport!!! Luckily the workers there kept the kids safe and called 911 but the guy left before they could see him. The cops will be pulling footage to catch this guy. He had told them he had a dog in his truck for them to see. And when they told him no, he said they would make his dog mad. He had been following them since this morning. He told them he seen them walking earlier and wanted them to see his dog. Everyone keep an eye out!!! PLEASE SHARE THIS!!!

Shortly after 2pm Allentown Fire and Wellsville Ems were dispatched to Fords Brook North Branch for a female patient who had rolled a lawnmower and was pinned under it.
Wellsville and Allentown units were on the road within minutes of dispatch, Scio 50 happened to be in the area and assisted in locating the incident and helping crews to free the trapped victim. Crews utilized the stokes basket off Allentown 4 to carry the victim approximately 100 yards to the awaiting ambulance.
We would like to pass on our wishes for a speedy recovery to the person involved and a thank you to Wellsville crews and Scio 50 for their help!

H. Joyce Coast, 85, of 781 Main Street, Duke Center, PA passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at the Bradford Ecumenical Home.
Born on March 11, 1938, in Olean, NY, she was a daughter of the late Dorsey R. Smith and Helen E. (Edmonds) Brenan. She was a 1957 graduate of Otto High School.
On July 13, 1957, in Duke Center, she married James L. Coast who preceded her in death on January 8, 1986.
Joyce, along with her husband, owned and operated Jim Coast Sales and Service in Duke Center for many years. After the death of her husband, she continued to run the business until her son Dan became owner.
Timothy S. Chase, 65, of Port Allegany, PA joined his ancestors on Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2023) in the Olean General Hospital, with his family by his side, following a lengthy battle against chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder.
Born on July 18, 1958, in Olean, NY, he was eldest son of Larry and Patricia Tripp Chase.
Tim had worked for Port Allegany Reporter Argus, Jaguar Manufacturing, and most recent Pierce Glass Co. (now Ardaugh) of Port Allegany, before having to retire in 2013.

Lois was born on Saturday, June 19, 1937 in Presque Isle, Maine.
She completed her high school education at Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio. Before moving to Shinglehouse, approximately 38 years ago, Lois was employed as a surgical assistant at Defiance Hospital in Defiance.
Reconstruction Project Continues Next Week on Route 6 in Troy Township, Bradford County
Montoursville, PA – Motorists are advised that a two-year roadway reconstruction project continues next week on Route 6 in Troy Township, Bradford County.
The week of Monday, August 7, 2023, the contractor will be performing base and joint repairs on Route 6 between 0.8 miles east of the intersection with Route 14 and the intersection with Peters Road. Motorists can expect single lane conditions with flagging where work is being performed. Work will be performed during daylight hours.

PennDOT is hosting a job fair highlighting job opportunities they have available in Cameron, McKean and Potter counties on Tuesday, Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Port Allegany Veterans Club. ATV, Snowmobile Grant Program Taking Applications  The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Recreation and Conservation recently announced it is accepting applications for the All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and Snowmobile Program’s fall grant round. The program awards grants from the ATV and Snowmobile Management Restricted Accounts for projects proposing land acquisition, planning, development, rehabilitation, maintenance, equipment purchase or educational programs for ATV or snowmobile trails and facilities. Eligible applicants include for-profit organizations, nonprofit organizations and municipalities in the Commonwealth. Proposals must be submitted via DCNR’s online grant application portal no later than 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29. For assistance with the portal, contact the Department’s Grants Customer Service Center at 800-326-7734 or DCNR-Grants@pa.gov. Bureau staff are available to assist applicants with developing a competitive application and it is strongly recommended that prospective applicants contact their regional advisor early in the grant process. Celebrating Agriculture at Ag Progress Days  Penn State’s Ag Progress Days, the Commonwealth’s largest outdoor agricultural exposition, will be held next week, from Tuesday, Aug. 8, through Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Russell E. Attention Farmers: Tax Credits Available to Support Water, Soil Quality Improvements  Pennsylvania farmers are encouraged to apply for a share of $13 million in tax credits available to support their efforts to improve soil health and water quality. The application period opens Monday, Aug. 7. Tax credits through Pennsylvania’s innovative conservation financing program, Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP), can be combined with other state funding to help pay for on-farm enhancements that protect the environment and boost farm sustainability. Tax credits are available to agricultural producers who implement best management practices or purchase equipment to reduce nutrient and sediment runoff, enhance soil health and improve the quality of Pennsylvania’s waterways. REAP applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Baseline eligibility includes compliance with the PA Clean Streams Law and the Pennsylvania Nutrient and Odor Management Law. More information about REAP, including the 2023-24 application packet, program guidelines and sponsorship process, is available here. The deadline to submit applications is Oct. 31. Financial Relief Grants Available to Eligible Veterans  The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is reminding veterans who may be facing an unexpected financial hardship that help is available. The DMVA oversees the Veterans Temporary Assistance (VTA) program, which provides eligible Pennsylvania veterans and their beneficiaries with financial relief for life’s basic needs, including food, shelter, fuel and clothing. Eligible veterans or their beneficiaries can qualify for up to $1,600 in a 12-month period. Eligibility requirements include those who served in the Armed Forces of the United States (discharged under honorable conditions), died in service or killed in action, or suffered a service-connected disability. Virtual Listening Sessions Set for PA Master Plan for Older Adults  The Department of Aging will host a series of virtual listening sessions during the month of August to discuss and gather input on Pennsylvania’s Master Plan for Older Adults – a 10-year, state-led and stakeholder-driven strategic plan designed to help transform the infrastructure and coordination of services for older Pennsylvanians.
