Potter County Continues Extended “America250” Celebration”

Potter County continues an extended “America250” celebration, marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Spearheading the observance are the Potter County Historical Society (PCHS), represented by David Castano; and Allegewi Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, represented by Ilene Altenhein. John E. Clay, 74, of Coudersport

John E. Clay, 74, of Coudersport, passed away Friday, December 5, 2025, at UPMC – Cole. He was born in Lebanon on January 4, 1951, the son of the late John H. and Treva S. (Weimer) Clay.
John worked for the H.B. Reese Candy Company, Hershey. He was also a carpenter and enjoyed building things. He also enjoyed time with his son Ben, and spending time with his grand kids, and great grand kids.

* WHAT…Snow expected late tonight through Wednesday, followed by
more localized lake effect snow Wednesday night through Thursday
night. Total snow accumulations over two days of 7 to 14 inches,
coming in a number of different batches. Winds gusting as high as
35 mph will produce blowing and drifting snow, mainly later
Wednesday night through Thursday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Snow will transition to plain rain and
drizzle as soon as early Wednesday morning, first across the lower
terrain near Lake Erie, and with increasing temperatures, across
inland lower elevations during the day Wednesday. Hill tops may
remain as a wet snow through the event, until the early evening
when a colder airmass transitions precipitation to a fluffier snow
for all locations.

Online Voting Open for Paint the Plow Program in District 2
Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is announcing that public voting is now open for this year’s Paint the Plow program. A total of six snowplows were creatively painted by high school students in three counties.
Paint the Plow is a statewide initiative that highlights safe winter driving while showcasing the artistic talents of students across Pennsylvania. This year’s theme, “Don’t race. Allow some space.”, encourages motorists to keep a safe distance from plows and other vehicles during winter weather conditions.
Earlier this year, students from Centre, Clearfield, and Clinton counties put their creativity to work, transforming PennDOT plow blades.

Jett Finch is a senior at Austin Area School District and Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center. He stands out as an exceptional student, leader, and community member whose dedication to academics, service, and personal growth has earned him recognition at the local, state, and national levels. Most recently, Jett achieved an outstanding 96% on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)—a score that places him among the highest-performing students in the region and reflects his strong aptitude for technical, mechanical, and analytical tasks. His performance demonstrates both academic excellence and the discipline needed for success in military, technical, and professional pathways.Jett has earned multiple professional certifications
Beyond this remarkable accomplishment, Jett has built a distinguished record of leadership, service, and achievement throughout his high school career. Jett currently ranks 2nd in his class and consistently earns High Honors. He serves as President of the National Honor Society and Vice President of the Yearbook Committee, and he is an active participant in the district’s Enrichment Program (GIEP). He has also been inducted into the National Technical Honor Society, reflecting his high performance in his CTE program at Seneca Highlands CTC.
A natural leader, Jett has been selected for numerous high-profile roles including serving as Emcee for the Veterans Day assembly and again for the district’s graduation ceremony. He has twice earned Student of the Week at Seneca Highlands CTC and holds positions on both the Safety Committee and the Student Committee.Jett is also a multi-sport athlete, competing in Wrestling (lettering in 2022–2023), Football, and Basketball.

GRANT FUNDING AVAILABLE TO IMPROVE WATERSHEDS IN YORK AND LANCASTER COUNTIES

HARRISBURG, Pa. (December 8) — The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) announced today that grant funding opportunities are available to fund stream habitat improvement projects through the York and Lancaster Counties Habitat Improvement Program.
Funding for the grant program is being provided by two sources, the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station and the Muddy Run Pumped Storage Project. In accordance with their respective Water Quality Certifications, the PFBC receives a combined total of $150,000 annually to fund projects such as dam removals, stream habitat improvement projects, and agricultural pasture and barnyard best management practices.

Day-to-day substitutes are also needed for teachers’ aides, janitors, and cafeteria workers. Teacher’s aide pay rate is $9.50/hour and janitor/cafeteria worker pay rate is $10/hour.

Robert L. “Rob” Woelfel, 62, of Kersey, PA

Robert L. “Rob” Woelfel, 62, of Kersey, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Known by all as a gifted mechanic and lifelong tinkerer, Rob had an unmatched ability to bring machines back to life and a curiosity that never rested.
He was born on November 7, 1963 in St. Marys, a son of the late Wray “Lucky” and Doris Wolfe Woelfel.
On June 30, 1989 in Queen of the World Church, he married Judith Lundy Woelfel, who survives.
David “Dave” G. Steis, 60, a native and longtime resident of Ridgway, PA

David “Dave” G. Steis, 60, a native and longtime resident of Ridgway, went home to the Lord on the afternoon of Saturday, December 6, 2025, after a brief stay in Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
In Hebrew, David means “beloved”, and that’s exactly how he was and will forever be received by friends and family. He was a graduate of St. Leo’s Catholic School in 1979 and Ridgway Area High School in 1983. He was a dual sport athlete for the Mighty Elkers football program as well as the former Elkers track and field team. He went on to further his education at Triangle Tech and earned a trade degree in carpentry. He earned his degree while working full-time and was awarded Most Outstanding Student and a 4.0 grade-point average.
Youth Trap Shooting League Sign-ups

Sign-ups for the 2026 Youth Trap Shooting league will occur on 14 & 15 December from 6-7pm at the Black Forest Conservation Association located at 189 Back Road, Coudersport PA.
All students aged 12 and above from the Austin, Coudersport, Galeton, and Northern Potter school districts are eligible to participate.
Practices will start the first week of March and the season will run through mid May.
