DCNR Announces New District Forester For Tioga State Forest

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania — Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn today announced that Benn Carlson has been appointed to serve as the district forester for Tioga State Forest, which covers 161,890 acres in Bradford and Tioga counties.
“We are excited Benn’s knowledge of the area and commitment to sustainable forestry leading Tioga State Forest,” Dunn said. “He is a proven leader and someone who is dedicated to managing forests to protect valuable habitat and to provide opportunities to educate the public on the incredible work of district staff.”
Carlson manages the forest, which includes the majestic Pine Creek Gorge, also known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, and the popular Pine Creek Rail Trail.
Tioga State Forest features awe-inspiring views and miles of clean, cool streams, like Cedar Run and Babbs Creek, and is one of eight state forests located in the Pennsylvania WildsOpens In A New Window.
Part of the forest sits in the Route 6 Heritage CorridorOpens In A New Window.
“I’ve lived here and recreated in this forest my entire life, so this is a great feeling to lead the Tioga as the district manager,” Carlson said. “We have an amazing team and are doing a lot of great work. I’m very thankful for what we have in this district.”
Carlson is a Galeton native and lives in the borough with his wife, Kristy, daughter, Zoey, and son, Daxon.
Missing Kayaker’s Body Located After All Day Search in Middlebury Township, Tioga County, PA
On 07/27/24 just after 9:00 am Depts 1,11,7 were dispatched to Ives run lane for a reported Water Rescue Missing kayaker. Chief 11-30(D.Swetland) of Middlebury Township Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. responded and was given the report of a kayaker that was missing possibly an individual Trapped underwater, after the initial report Chief 11-30(D. Swetland) requested that Drone 50 with drones and boat and Department 8 for a boat to assist with the Water Rescue/Search.
Multiple Agencies were also Dispatched from Lycoming County and Steuben County for there Dive Teams to Assist with the Search. Crews worked diligently for 7 hours to locate the individual and eventually was located. We will not be releasing any details on this incident but we Extend our condolences and Prayers to the Family.

Six Olean Graduates Receive CRCF Scholarships

OLEAN, N.Y., July 26 – Six recent Olean High School graduates have received scholarship awards stewarded by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
Allie Stayer, Faith Schreiber, Isaac Moses and Lily Todd all received the Mary Elizabeth Smith Scholarship.
Stayer and Schreiber received $1,000. Moses and Todd received $650.
PennDOT McKean County Maintenance Work Schedule for the Week of July 29

Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in McKean County the week of July 29. PennDOT performs year-round maintenance in its mission to provide a safe, efficient transportation system, and the scope of work in McKean County for the coming week is as follows:
Bridge Maintenance & Cleaning
- Route 346 bridge spanning Willow Creek at the Willow Creek ATV trail in Corydon Township. Monday, July 29, through Friday, August 2. This work takes place off the roadway with little to now traffic impact.
Pennsylvania has some of the oldest bridges in the country, with an age of more than 50 years on average. Preventive maintenance is vital in extending the life of the structures. As such, PennDOT maintenance crews perform some bridge deck patching and structural repairs.
CRCF to host graphic design and branding Link and Learn Seminar

OLEAN, N.Y., July 16 – The Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation will hold its second Nonprofit Link and Learn Seminar of the year, “Essentials of Graphic Design and Branding for Nonprofits,” to be led by digital marketing expert Mark Fischer on August 16.
This session will cover the fundamentals of good graphic design, including key principles of layout, color theory and typography.
Thirteen Receive Gregory D. Spring Perseverance Scholarship

OLEAN, N.Y., July 16 – Thirteen recent area graduates recently received the Gregory D. Spring Perseverance Scholarship, an annual scholarship managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
Colton Boser, Gracie Amore, Kevin Edwards-Hardy and Robert Casey, all of Allegany-Limestone Central School, as well as Portville’s Shaela Spring, Hailey Studley and Dayton Shaw all received awards this year.
PITT-BRADFORD PROFESSOR PUBLISHES BOOK FOR AFRICAN EDUCATORS

BRADFORD, Pa. — Dr. Jonathan Chitiyo, associate professor of education at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, has published a new book about teaching children with special needs in Africa.
Chitiyo, who is from Zimbabwe, studied three countries: Ghana, South Africa and Zimbabwe, where he investigated how teachers are taught to support students with special needs.
Ellicottville Students Receive Hintz, Other CRCF Awards

OLEAN, N.Y., July 24 – Four Ellicottville students received scholarship awards managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
Brooke Butler and Keelin Finn received the Kristen Hintz Memorial Scholarship for $1,500 each.
This scholarship, which came under the Foundation’s management in 2017, is named in memory of Kristen Nicole Hintz, who was a senior at Ellicottville Central School and at the top of her class when a tragic auto accident cut her life short in 2000. A leader in her class, she was a multi-sport athlete who always gave her best and persevered through difficult situations.
GREY MUZZLE GRANT GIVES LOCAL SENIOR DOGS A SECOND CHANCE

There’s good news for old dogs this summer as The Grey Muzzle Organization announces the recipients of its annual grants, and dogs at Second Chance Animal Sanctuaries are among the winners.
Second Chance in Tioga is one of 100 animal welfare groups chosen from nearly 400 applicants to receive a grant to help local senior dogs and the people who love them. The winning groups are sharing more than $1 million in grants to help save and improve the lives of at-risk old dogs in their communities.
John Albert Yilek, 89, of Germania, PA

John Albert Yilek, 89, of Germania, PA, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at UPMC Wellsboro. Born June 25, 1935, in Blossburg, PA, he was a son of the late Albert and Julia (Karhan) Yilek. He was Veteran having served in the United States Army 8th infantry division Baumhalder in West Germany from1958-1960.
On May 2, 1964 in Germania, he married the former Ruth “Toni” Succowich who survives. John was a heavy equipment operator for PENN DOT before retirement. In his earlier work years, he truly enjoyed his passion of logging for Ted Sykora. He continued his logging passion and equipment operating working with his son, John, well into his mid-80s.
He was a member of Saint Germain’s Catholic Church, former Assistant Chief of Germania Fire Company, and former Supervisor of Abbott Township.
Hunting with family members, fishing, gardening, camping, and snowmobiling kept him active in the outdoors, and as many of you know, he cut wood year-round. Potato farming with Jim Gilbert brought back family memories for John. He also made daily trips to make sure all of his “grand dogs” had what they needed.
Elfriede E. Achter, age 87, of Sabinsville, PA

Elfriede E. Achter, age 87, of Sabinsville, PA passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at the Green Home in Wellsboro. Born May 5, 1937 in Waiblingen, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Wilhelm and Frida (Schaefer) Stilz.
Elfriede worked for Wundies Inc in Wellsboro. She loved gardening and her flower beds, reading, watching baseball and loved her pets, cats and dogs.
Beverly R. Gosper, age 87, of Osceola, PA

Beverly R. Gosper, age 87, of Osceola, PA went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at Broad Acres Nursing Home in Wellsboro.
She was born on April 14, 1937 in Elmira, NY.
Beverly enjoyed gardening, her flower beds, housekeeping and loved talking about Jesus with her family and friends.
Roger Allen Smith, age 73, of Salina, Kansas, formerly of Elkland, PA

Roger Allen Smith, age 73, of Salina, Kansas, formerly of Elkland, PA passed away unexpectedly at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas after an e-bike accident.
Roger was born March 16, 1951 in Wellsboro, PA, a son of Ernest B. and Alice (Rudy) Smith. Roger graduated from Ekland High School in 1970. He served in the Air Force from 1971-1973.
Roger was a free spirit who enjoyed hunting, fishing, horses, motorcycles, and dogs.
Lorraine M. Thurston, age 92, of Elkland, PA

Lorraine M. Thurston, age 92, of Elkland, PA passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira.
Born August 19, 1931 in Deerfield Twp., PA, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Myrtle (Dailey) Brass.
Lorraine graduated from Elkland High School, Class of 1950 and Mansfield State Teachers College, Class of 1954. Lorraine married Alfred Thurston on November 22, 1958 at the Elkland United Methodist Church and they shared 59 years together until his passing in 2018.
She retired from Northern Tioga School District after many years of teaching. She was a member of the Eastern Star for 74 years, Cowanesque Valley Garden Club and the Elkland Senior Citizens Club. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, making quilts and knitting.

He was born February 16, 2019, in York. Waylon was a student at Northern Potter Children’s School in Ulysses. He enjoyed listening to Prof and watching his siblings play. Waylon had a big personality and sense of humor.

Portville graduates receive Wormer, McHone scholarships

Four recent Portville Central School graduates received awards from scholarship funds managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
Allison Smith and Zoey Hoak received the Dr. Donald A. Wormer Family Scholarship for $1,200, while Joel Stives received $1,500.
The endowed scholarship, established in memory of Dr. Wormer by his late wife, Elinor Wormer, is awarded to graduating seniors of Portville Central School attending a two- or four-year institution to pursue a degree in a health care-related field. Students are also eligible to re-apply and recent graduates may also apply for this scholarship.
North Central issues RFP for EDA Tech Hub Pressed Materials Strategy Development Consortium

The North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission’s (North Central) Board of Directors approved publishing a Request for Proposals focused on the EDA Tech Hub Strategy Development Grant the commission was awarded in 2023 during Wednesday’s monthly meeting.
The North Central Pressed Materials Strategy Development Consortium was created through a $400,000 Tech Hubs Strategy Development Grant awarded through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration. North Central is seeking a highly qualified consultant with expertise in the pressed materials industry with a strong focus on economic development to develop a cutting-edge and transformative 10-year Implementation Plan aimed at scaling the entire pressed materials ecosystem in the six-county region.
