Christmas for Kids Fundraising Underway
Endless Mountain Chapter of A.B.A.T.E. kicked off fundraising for a popular program which provides gifts to children during Christmas. For decades the chapter adopted the program. For John Overturf it was his favorite campaign and over the years it included a chicken BBQ, collection of gifts outside of a business and recently vehicle rides featuring A.B.A.T.E. members.

Steven D. Houben, 54, of 745 Gleason Hollow Road, Portville, NY passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at his home.
Steven was born September 28, 1969, in Olean and was the son of Jack D. and Mary Kay Palumbo Houben.
Steven was a 1987 graduate of Olean High School. He was a hard dedicated worker throughout his life. Steven worked as a distributor for the Buffalo Newspaper for 28 years and was currently working at Dominos Pizza.
Steven enjoyed cars, stock cars, drag racing, and kayaking. He loved music, going to concerts and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. But most of all he loved taking care of his mother. He will be remembered as a super nice guy who always had your back and will help you out no matter what you need.
NPRC Launches Low-Cost EMT Course in Port Allegany
PORT ALLEGANY – Northern Pennsylvania Regional College’s Workforce Development department is providing an opportunity for McKean County area residents to receive training to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). The cost of this course is $350.00, but McKean County residents are eligible for assistance to help make the course available at no-cost, thanks to support from the County of McKean. Residents from outside of McKean County are also welcome to sign-up for this course offering. Before beginning the course, students are required to complete a placement test to determine class eligibility.
The course will begin on the evening of Thursday, August 22, 2024, and will continue each Tuesday and Thursday evening through Tuesday, February 18 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. The class will meet at the Port Allegany Volunteer Fire Department located at 28 Maple Street.
According to projections, the Emergency Medical Technician career will experience a growth rate of seven percent through the year 2031 and full-time workers in this position earn an average pay of around $50,000 per year nationally. The 200-hour program teaches technical knowledge and skills needed to become a certified Basic Emergency Medical Technician. This includes all skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other specialized service. After successful completion of this course, individuals are eligible to take the National Registry exam for Emergency Medical Technician. Currently, NPRC has an above industry average cumulative pass rate of the National Registry exam at over 90 percent.
NPRC’s Vice President of Workforce Development, Adam Johnson, shared, “NPRC and the County of McKean recognize costs can be a barrier to training. Therefore, NPRC has launched a program to offer low or no cost EMS training programs throughout its 10-county region. We are grateful for the County of McKean and Star Hose Fire Company #1’s support to help fill the need for trained public safety professionals in McKean County and surrounding areas.”

Leslie M. “Rabbit” Jensen, 71, of Carter Camp, PA
Leslie M. “Rabbit” Jensen, 71, of Carter Camp, PA, passed away on Tuesday, July 23 2024, at home. Born November 9, 1952 in Annapolis, MD, she was a daughter of the late John Jensen and Mary (Blades) Jensen.
Rabbit was a graduate of Pleasantville High School in Pleasantville, NJ and then attended Widener University in Chester, PA. She was then employed at Xerox as a repair tech and then at the Ford Motor Company and Visteon in electronics and as a quality control tech.
Rabbit was a member of the Galeton Public Library Board for many years, and greatly enjoyed reading and gaming. She was also a writer and edited newsletters for DVFFA and the Frosty Hollow Herb Guild. She put together and edited “A Woman’s Angle” and self-published it for DVFFA. This was a collection of stories from 10 years of the newsletter.

Paula D. Guffey, of 20 Cassin Hill Rd, Garnet Valley, PA
Paula D. Guffey, beloved wife, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully in her home on July 29, 2024, after a brief illness, surrounded by her family. She was a resident of 20 Cassin Hill Rd, Garnet Valley, PA.
Paula had a grace about her that can’t be described, regal in her beauty. She was known for her incredible generosity and dedication to her family. She worked as a secretary at Ridgway Hospital, where she was valued for her kind nature. Despite living an adventurous life early on, including traveling on the Concorde before it was retired, residing in the heart of New York City, and even meeting Pope John Paul II. Paula will be most remembered for her later years, living the life she wanted with John. Embracing a simpler life that reflected her humble personality and her desire for simplicity and the love of home.
She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as doing crossword puzzles, reading books, watching the news with John, spending time with her family, and caring for her dogs, Joey and Jill. Paula was also known for her amazing decorating skills, creating beautiful homes that were a testament to her talent and attention to detail.
Paula’s incredible generosity, caring, kindness, and love for her family will forever be remembered and cherished. She was always there to care for her loved ones whenever they needed her, asking nothing in return. Our hearts will miss her more than words could ever express
Potter County Farmers Market Friday, August 2nd
The Potter County Farmers Market will be outdoors on the square across from the county jail, every Friday (weather permitting) from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The next market will be this Friday, August 2nd. Below is a list of who plans to be there and what they plan on bringing to the Market:

Leon E. Cline, 91, of County Road 18, Alma, NY
Leon E. Cline, 91, of County Road 18, passed away at home on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, with his family by his side. He was born March 13, 1933, in Wellsville, the son of the late Leon S. and Esther M. (Willard) Cline.
Leon was raised in Allegany County and attended school in a Wellsville area one-room-schoolhouse. He was eventually awarded an honorary GED from the school district. With special permission from his parents, he enlisted at 16 with the United States Army and deployed at 17 to Korea with the 32nd infantry, proudly serving from 1950 to 1953. After his honorable discharge he travelled the United States, including spending time in Florida as a Tugboat Operator and in Arizona, working at his aunt’s bar.
