The Tioga County Historical Society has been awarded an $8,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) to help offset general operating expenses, Rep. Clint Owlett (R-Tioga/Bradford) announced today.

“Our historical society provides a valuable window into our past through multiple facilities it operates across the county,” Owlett said. “I am happy to see the Commonwealth supporting this important service to the community.”

The Tioga County Historical Society operates the Robinson House Museum and the Ladd Genealogical and Historical Research Library at 120 Main St. in Wellsboro, which is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., except for federal holidays. The historical society also operates the Tioga County Farm, Mine and Lumber Museum in Whitneyville, as well as the Osceola Blockhouse, an 1835 log house in Osceola Township.

The grant was awarded through PHMC’s Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program. The program provides general operating support to museums and official county historical societies that are not directly supported by other state agency operating support programs.

Rotarian John Lenox spoke about the Coudersport Chamber of Commerce at our September 9, 2024, meeting at Sweden Valley Manor.

John is on the Coudersport Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. The Board includes local business people: Board President, Kelly Bruno; Dennis Goodenough, Lisa Brennan, Shelly Butler, Caroline Powers, John Stilson, and John Lenox.

The Chamber’s goal is to get a better business atmosphere in our community, “butts in the seats and heads in the beds” at restaurant and hospitality businesses.

The Chamber is designing a website. They would like the website to list events held by Rotary and other organizations.

They meet every other Monday at Vinnie’s or Fickinger’s and meetings are open to the public once a month. They are looking for volunteers to help with events that support local businesses.

Elk County, PA — The Elk County Commissioners, Fritz Lecker, Matt Quesenberry, and Greg Gebauer have made a significant contribution to the St. Marys Area United Way’s 2024 campaign. The commissioners presented a $2,500 donation to Jim Ryan, President of the St. Marys Area United Way, to help advance the organization’s efforts in meeting its $220,000 fundraising goal for the upcoming year.

The funds raised during the 2024 campaign will be distributed to qualified non-profits in 2025. Eligible organizations must meet the following criteria to apply for funding:

• Hold a current 501(c)(3) status
• Provide services to residents within the St. Marys Area School District
• Address health and human welfare needs
• Be registered with the PA State Bureau of Charitable Solicitation or qualify for an exemption

Of all local problems, hunger stands at the center as both a cause and symptom of poverty. Yet hunger isn’t treated like a central issue worth solving to improve the socioeconomic fabric of our communities.

In a week leading up to the start of United East Conference play, the Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s and men’s soccer teams combined to win four of five matches. UE play starts on Saturday for both squads and on Oct. 1 for the women’s volleyball team.

The Wildcats got a five-goal first half en route to an 8-0 home win over Mt. Aloysius College as they increased their unbeaten streak to six on Wednesday. Brooke Klinger of Herndon and Megan Kurian of Royersford both scored twice and Cassie Johnson of Richland had three assists to pace the offense, while Nicole Lichtinger of Erie made two saves in goal to record her fourth shutout of the season.

Tree dedication 24557 – Pitt-Bradford alumni Bill Hughey ’68-’70 and Gary Rathburn ’68-’70 unveil a hydrangea tree planted in memory of Ed Horbal, Steven Scott and Terrance Doyle, three Pitt-Bradford students who were killed in the crash of Allegheny Airlines Flight 737 on Jan. 6, 1969, on approach to the Bradford Regional Airport. Both Hughey and Rathburn were on the same flight but survived the crash.
