After learning to play guitar, write music, create computer code and design a video game, what is the next thing that Bradford native, Daniel Picklo decided to tackle?  Writing his first novel!  That’s exactly what Picklo, a Senior Web Developer for BridgeRev, (an Oklahoma City based company), did in 2024.  His debut novel, The Dead Don’t Forgive, released on Saturday, October 5 through Amazon.com in paperback format.  The hardback edition became available by October’s end. 

Picklo, a Bradford Area High School and Pitt-Bradford alumnus, has been employed in the Marketing and Technical Services industry for ten (10) years, but states, “Writing and storytelling were always my first real passions. But, realizing that most authors cannot live off of their writing, I looked at other avenues that could provide a living.”  Picklo expressed his gratitude for the position he’s currently afforded that enables him to write for fun.

The Dead Don’t Forgive is a psychological-thriller, set in the Pacific Northwest.  The protagonist, Sam Stratton, battles grief and remorse for the untimely death of his young wife.  In an effort to find healing, Sam treks into the wilderness on a therapeutic, 3-day hike with others who battle their own private demons.  The intrepid group soon discovers that their pasts are more similar than previously thought, as they disappear deeper into the rugged wilderness.  Thoughts of healing and atonement are quickly replaced by the struggle to survive.

To pass on the generosity shown to our department during Flood Debby, we will be donating our 1990 Chevy Tanker truck to Elk Mills Poga Fire Department in Bulter, Tennessee. We will also be sending a number of pallets of equipment, both from Crary Hose and items donated to us by Towamencin, Bon Air and other fire departments that donated through those departments. This fire department lost EVERYTHING from the flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. The level of impact this has on a volunteer fire department is immeasurable, and we are so thankful we are now in a position to help.

Students from the Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center, led by their instructor Michael Les, helped to bring back a small piece of Port Allegany’s Christmas history by repairing a giant 8 foot by 12 foot jolly Santa.  The Santa sign was originally displayed on the Town Square in the 50’s. It will be on display to promote this year’s Small Town Christmas event happening on the Town Square December 7th.  Small Town Christmas, preparing for its second-year, is a project of the Port Allegany Women’s Club.  Small Town Christmas is under the leadership of Lindsay Isherwood, Christmas Committee Director.   The Santa belongs to the Canoe Place Historical Society, donated by Clyde Johnson.   

Motorists are advised that preparations have started for a winter shutdown on a bridge replacement project on Route 6 in Richmond Township, Tioga County. The bridge, which carries Route 6 over a tributary to North Elk Run, is located approximately 2.8 miles east of Route 660 in Charleston Township and approximately 2.5 miles west of Route 15 in Mansfield.

On Friday, November 1, 2024, the contractor, H&P Construction, Inc., removed the temporary traffic barrier and traffic has been restored to normal conditions. The detours have been lifted for North Schodac Road and South Schodac Road.

The week of Monday, November 4, 2024, the contractor will perform miscellaneous construction activities in preparation for a winter shutdown. Motorists should be alert, slow down, and drive with caution.

H&P Construction, Inc. is the prime contractor for this $5.4 million bridge replacement project. Work includes construction of a temporary structure, removal of the bridge over a tributary to North Elk Run, installation of a new concrete box culvert, approach work, line painting, and guide rail upgrades. There will be a winter shut down. Work on this project is expected to be completed in the Summer of 2026.

The  Port Allegany Women’s Club is working to help meet needs in the Port Allegany School District community during the upcoming holiday season using a program called the Giving Tree.   Request forms were distributed through the schools and gift tags have been prepared for the gifts that are needed.  Banners will be placed in local businesses and churches between November 4th – 29th.  To give a gift (or two), fill out the top of the perforated tag and drop it in the provided box.  The other piece of the tag describes the child’s needs/wishes and can be taken for shopping. Unwrapped gifts can be placed into a bag along with the ornament tag.  Bags should be dropped off at the Gethsemane Lutheran Education Hall located on Arnold Avenue Monday-Wednesday, December 2nd through 4th from 10 a.m. – noon or 6 – 8 p.m.  Gift bags will be assembled and ready to be picked up on December 14 from 10 a.m. – noon at the Education Hall.
