Ice And Spice Winter Weekend In Downtown Wellsboro – Multiple Events Taking Place!

This Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13 and 14, is Ice and Spice Winter Weekend in downtown Wellsboro. If the cold weather holds, people will be able to see the seven ice sculptures from Ice Ice Baby weekend, along with this weekend’s new sculptures.
See 8 Ice Masterpieces for Free
Love will be in the air this Saturday, Feb. 14, as Valentine’s Day is celebrated with eight different ice sculptures symbolizing love and romance. Carved from 16 blocks of ice weighing 300 pounds each or 2.4 tons, these masterpieces will be on display on sidewalks in front of eight Main Street businesses. This is a free event.
Ice carvers Freddy Grosser and Lavelle Mcneal are transporting the ice from Elegant Ice Creations in Broadview Heights, Ohio to Wellsboro, where they will assemble three of the sculptures and do five live demonstrations.
On Feb. 14, by 8:30 a.m., the pre-carved heart throne, created from 7 blocks of ice weighing 2100 pounds, will be on display on the sidewalk between the Arcadia Theatre at 50 Main Street and the Penn Wells Hotel, which is next door. Adults can sit on the ice throne and have their pictures taken. Children can, too.
Two more sculptures, Cupid and a rose, each pre-carved from 600 pounds of ice, will offer more photo opportunities for the public at 8:30 a.m. Cupid will be in front of Pop’s Culture Shoppe at 25 Main Street, and the rose at MVR Vacation Rentals, Inc. at 64 Main Street.
Grosser and Mcneal will use their carving skills to make the ice fly as they create five masterpieces from 1500 pounds of ice during the live demonstrations. A swan will be carved at 10 a.m. at Dunham’s Department Store, 45 Main Street; a harp at 11 a.m. at Timeless Destination, 77 Main Street; double hearts at 12 p.m. at the Deane Center, 104 Main Street; an abstract couple that form a heart at 1 p.m. at Highland Chocolates, 82 Main Street and love birds at 2 p.m. at Oregon Hill Winery at 87 Main Street.
The public is invited to watch the carvers at work and ask them questions. It’s free.
“Because ice carving can be done in a relatively short period of time, people can stick around to watch a sculpture being created from start to finish,” said Jeff Meyers, owner of Elegant Ice.
Free Ice Skating is This Saturday
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 14, at Packer Park on Queen Street will be free ice skating. Ice skates in a variety of sizes for adults and children will be available for people to use or they can bring their own.
Free Dance Lesson is This Saturday
Being offered at 3 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 14, is a free, hour-long, foxtrot dance lesson in the lobby at the Deane Center at 104 Main Street.
“This is a great opportunity to learn a few steps that are perfect for dancing to jazz, swing, or big band music,” said Kacy Hagan, owner and instructor for Kacy’s Learn 2 Ballroom Dance. “It’s fun for all ages, and no prior dance experience is necessary,” she said.
Come to the class as partners or singles. “Singles will be paired up or can dance on their own, whichever they prefer,” said Hagan. “Wear comfortable shoes with smooth soles rather than sneakers to more easily turn on the dance floor. Preregistration is not required. People can just show up,” Hagan said.
Free Games at Pop’s are Feb. 13-21
In conjunction with the Winter Olympics in Italy, Pop’s Culture Shoppe at 25 Main Street is hosting free “Winter Games Olympics.” Skill games like “Ice Cool” targets and “Olympic Rings” are available for free open play in Pop’s Playroom anytime during regular store hours and during the Feb. 13 and 20 free Game Nights. Practice and record your score when ready. At 7 p.m. during Game Night this Friday, Feb. 13 families are invited to play Winter Olympics “Ticket to Ride: Italy.”
