BAPL Book Clubs Come Together at Chautauqua
It started as an idea to try to bring different generations of people together to share a common interest. It was only natural, then, that the three book clubs, the Middle Ground, Teen and Adult book clubs, would find a common interest to share . . . books.
Specifically, they were given the opportunity to read and share novels by the YA author Kwame Alexander at a book forum at the library on Saturday, July 15.
Over 30 people attended this session as student members of the Middle Ground and Teen Book clubs shared their views of Swing and Crossover, both penned by Alexander. All of the adult book club members were greatly impressed by the knowledge and understanding these kids brought to their reading of Alexander’s books.
One member of the adult book club, Madeline Miles, said, “I walked in with one view of his books and walked out with another perspective thanks to the discussion.” Another remarked, “I was so impressed by how maturely they read and discuss books.”
The sharing didn’t end there. Many members of all three clubs joined together on a Niagara Scenic Bus to hear Kwame Alexander speak at Chautauqua Institute on Wednesday, August 2. The day was beautiful, the grounds magical, and the speaker inspirational. All of those attending the trip agreed it was a special day.
The coordinator of the event, Marie Troskosky, remarked on how accommodating everyone was to the kids. They were able to have a group photo with Kwame Alexander and after were treated to ice cream by Chautauqua’s writing coordinator, Angie Coleman. She also promised the group that she would set up a whole day for the group next year with the YA author they bring to Chautauqua. Everyone agreed that that is something to look forward to.
All the book clubs are designed to create an informal atmosphere for people who enjoy reading and discussing the books they’ve read. The Adult Book club meets the 3rd Saturday of the month from 10:30-11:30 am. The Middle Ground Book club meets the first Thursday of every month from 5-6 pm and the Teen Book Club meets the third Tuesday of every month from 5-6pm. Everyone is welcome to join.
