Area graduates receive business-related CRCF scholarship awards
OLEAN, N.Y., July 5, 2023 — Five recent area graduates received scholarship managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation for students pursuing a degree in business-related areas of study.
Drew Evens, Katrina DeChane, McKenzie Schuyler and Nathan Fowler received the Daniel McCarthy Scholarship.
The scholarship, given through the generosity of the Catherine M. Cridler Trust, honors Mr. McCarthy, one of Olean Business Institute’s founders. The scholarship is available to graduating and continuing college students pursuing a business degree.
Evens, from Port Allegany High School, and DeChane, of Ellicottville Central School, received $1,000 awards. Schuyler, a Franklinville Central School/Ten Broeck Academy graduate, and Fowler, of Hinsdale Central School, each received awards of $800.
Evens plans to study business finance at PennWest University Clarion. DeChane will attend Jamestown Business College to study accounting. Schuyler will study business at Jamestown Community College. Fowler plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford to study business management.
Allegany-Limestone Central School’s Isabella Baldwin received the Two Joes Scholarship for $500.
This fund supports an annual scholarship in the name of community-minded businessmen Joe Sgro and Joe DeRose for a Cattaraugus County student interested in pursuing a degree in technology, marketing, communications, business or a related field.
Baldwin intends to study sports marketing management at the University of South Carolina.

Intersection Improvement Project at Routes 6, 660 and 4002 Continues in Charleston Township, Tioga County
Montoursville, PA – Motorists are advised that an intersection improvement project continues at the intersection of Route 6, Route 660, and Route 4002 (Charleston Road) in Charleston Township, Tioga County. The intersection is located approximately a half mile east of Route 1001 (Whitneyville Road / Ore Bed Road) and 1.5 miles west of the intersection with Bullock Road.
On Wednesday, July 5, 2023, Charleston Road will be closed between Route 6 and Cole Road. A detour using Whitneyville Road / Ore Bed Road and Route 6 will be in place through July.
On Monday, July 17, 2023, Route 660 will be closed between Rice Road and Route 6, while the contractor begins to realign roadway.
Route 660 Detour
- Route 660 eastbound traffic will use Route 6 east, Route 15 south to (Camp Canoe Exit / Route 2005 (Main Street) south), to Route 660 east.
- Route 660 westbound traffic will use Route 2005 (Main Street) north, Route 15 north (Mansfield Exit / Route 6 west), Route 660 west.
Dean Construction, LLC., is the prime contractor for this $2.5 million intersection improvement project. Work includes intersection realignment, paving, line painting, updated signage, and guide rail. Work on this project is expected to be completed by October of 2023, weather permitting.

Jul 5th, 2023—The Pennsylvania State Police Troop C – Ridgway Barracks is investigating a Theft of Motor Vehicle, Identity Theft and a Theft by deception that occurred on 03/24/23.
A White, Hispanic male went into Legends Power Sport and Turf LLC located at 1080 Million Dollar Highway, Fox Township, Elk County, with a preapproved Northwest Bank Loan.
Through investigation, the male used a stolen NY identification of a female to get the loan and the vehicle he purchased. The Hispanic male purchased a 2023 Polaris Razor Turbo R4 Ultimate, Orange madness bearing VIN: 3NSG4D927PG322153 from Legends Power Sports and Turf.
The bank loan used to purchase the said vehicle was $46,899.00.
The male was driving a White Dodge Ram pickup truck bearing a NY license plate hauling a utility trailer.

John M. Bowen, 72, of 9784 Hewitt Road, Clarksville, NY
John M. Bowen, 72, of 9784 Hewitt Road, Clarksville, NY passed away Friday (June 30, 2023) at home.
Born July 15, 1950, in Jamestown, he was a son of Myron and Doris Barnes Bowen. On Feb. 12, 1972, in Tuscon, Ariz., he married the former Deborah Lauer, who survives.
John graduated from Silver Creek High School, Class of 1968. He served in the U.S. Navy.
After his military service he worked for Dresser Rand, ACME Electric and Combined Life Insurance, but last owned and operated BEST Satellite Company with his wife.
He enjoyed playing in the Friends Party and Dance Band all over Allegany and Cattaraugus County. He loved listening to music and being with his family.
He leaves behind his wife, Debbie; three sons, Joshua Bowen of Bolivar, Danel (Jennifer) Bowen of Bolivar and Jason (Katie) Wenki of Portville; a daughter, Sarastarr (Corey) Johnson of Little Genesee; a daughter-in-law, Jennifer Baxter of Wellsville; his grandchildren, Seth, Alana, Lillian, Sawyer, Alex, Raina, Izik, Jaxson, Skye and Marley; a sister, Marsha (Gary) Wright of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the family home on Saturday, July 15, 2023.

Nikky’s Dance Studio Takes Awards in Nationals in Ohio
Nikky’s Dance Studio Competition Team had an incredible week at Nationals in Sandusky, Ohio. The team came home with 5 National Champion Titles, 2 Big Show Champions, numerous Overall scores, two Excellence in Choreography Awards, two Excellence in Entertainment Awards, and multiple Judge’s Choice Awards. Six dances were awarded the coveted honor to re-compete in The Big Show. We were thrilled to share the stage with some amazing talent and studios. The team trained hard this season and they were rewarded this past week. The team is still offering private auditions for their 2024 team, contact studio director Nikky Ewing – if interested. Recreational registration will be held on August 19th from 10-12pm at the studio in Smethport, PA.

George H. Lamb, 84, of Greenbrier Drive, Kersey, PA.
George H. Lamb, 84, of Greenbrier Drive, Kersey, passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, June 30, 2023 at his residence, with his wife by his side.
He was born on December 10, 1938, in Coudersport to the late Alfred “Tex” and Gladys Hoak Lamb.
On April 20, 1979, George married Lesa Rhodes who survives. they shared more than 44 years together.
George moved to St. Marys with his parents in 1946 graduated from St. Marys Area High School, class of 1957. After graduating he went on to serve in the U.S. Army, and was discharged early due to his father sustaining an injury in 1958, George became part of the Signal Corp, Army Reserve in St. Marys, Battery B.
George worked in the grocery industry for Riverside & BiLo from 1958-1995, 37 years, then was hired at Burke’s ACE Home Center as department manager finally working parttime in power tool repair. At the age of 80 George retired.
In the years following High School, George participated in a number of activities: competitive archery, bowling league, boating and water skiing on the East Branch Dam and was a Deputy Game Protector for the PA Game Commission in the 1960’s. George was also an avid deer hunter.
George enjoyed music at an early age and began accordion lessons. He played for dances and on WKBI Radio with his father’s band, Tex Lamb and the Midnight Ramblers. His mother played bass and father guitar. During the 1980’s George and Lesa were members of the “Bells of St. Marys” square dance club.
George loved cars and owned many over the years, but mostly enjoyed his 2 Corvettes ; a 1978 Silver Anniversary edition and a 1995 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car.
George and Lesa, along with their Corvette friends traveled to many car shows, cruise ins and also to the National Corvette Museum in KY. On Memorial Day he often drove dignitaries in the parade. Working on cars was his favorite pastime, whether on his own vechicles or his friends’.
He was a faithful attendee of the St. Marys Methodist Church, formerly the First United Methodist Church. He loved his church family and the special friendships made there.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by 2 daughters; Lisa VanAlstine and her husband Charles of St. Marys and Lori Burke of Winter Garden, Florida and by 2 granddaughters; Ciara VanAlstine and Cassidy Burke (Robert Stadelman), and by a great-granddaughter; Eva. He is also survived by a brother; Alfred “Buddy” Lamb of St. Marys, and by his former wife; Sylvia Schauer Stauffer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son; Jeffery Lamb, who passed away on October 5, 2015.
Funeral Services for the late George H. Lamb will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the St. Marys Methodist Church, 140 N. St. Marys Street, St. Marys, Pa 15857. The family will be welcoming friends at the church beginning at 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral.
Visitation with the family will be at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home on Friday, July 7, 2023 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.
