Durwood M. ADAMS, 84, of Mills, PA, died Monday, July 10, 2023 in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport.
Born July 25, 1938, in Harrison Valley, he was the fourth child of Lawrence and Dorothy Abbott Adams. On October 30, 1971, in Manchester, NH, he married the former Marie Ann Jeannette Cote, who predeceased him on October 1, 2011.
We begin to remember not just that you died, but you lived and gave us memories too beautiful to forget. We mourn the loss and celebrate the life of a great man, son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, Marine, and friend.

As a young man of 18, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving proudly and honorably from 1956 – 1976, retiring as a Gunnery Sergeant. He served three tours in Vietnam and one tour in Okinawa. Durwood earned several awards which were prideworthy to his family, but to him it was “I had a job to do and I did my job.” He was not a fan of fanfare.
After retiring from the military, he was employed by the Forestry Department for a year and Potter Distributors for four and a half years before settling in at Pure Carbon for 19 years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, scratch off tickets, vanilla candles, watching baseball and football games on tv, going out to breakfast, and ribbing employees, family, and friends with his quick wit and loving sass.
He loved taking his convertible Camaro out for drives on nice days. It was often joked that it was the cleanest car on the streets because it never saw rain or foul weather. He never shied away from helping others, whether it was a kind word, listening ear, a mowed lawn, or taking Amish to the store. His open-door policy was exemplified by his words “you are always welcome, come on by.” Woody was a member of Carl E. Hyde American Legion Post #963 in Ulysses.
Surviving are: six children, Kemberly (David), Robert, Joann, Louise (Alfred), James, and Shannon; 15 grandchildren, Dyana (Dan), Cristine (David), Raymond, Marc (Kelly), Leslie, Jesse, Steven, Elenor, JaeAlyn (Christina), KelliAnn (Alan), Dawna, James, CJ, Nicholas, Justin, and Racheal; 13 great-grandchildren, Teri (Christopher), Kristen (Dana), Ashley, Aiden, Kennadi, Mason, Alexandra, Brian, Alan, Evangeline, Georgianna, Cambridge, and Kathleen; two great-great-granddaughters, Emily and Ava; many friends, including special honors to Jolene; many good friends from the Amish community; nieces and nephews. The private, confidential survey is available here and will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. More information about PBDA is available here. Expanding Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program Legislation that would make more Pennsylvania seniors and people with disabilities eligible for property tax or rent relief was recently approved by the House.House Bill 1100 would increase income limits for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program for homeowners and renters to $45,000. The bill would also raise the maximum amount each homeowner or renter can receive from $650 to $1,000. This bill will help expand the reach of property tax and rent relief to more than 150,000 additional individuals and help make Pennsylvania a more affordable place to live. The measure is pending the governor’s signature to become law. The expansion would be based on property tax and rent paid in 2023, with claims paid in 2024. The rebate program benefits eligible residents 65 years and older; widows and widowers 50 years and older; and people with disabilities 18 years and older. Currently, the income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters, and half of Social Security income is excluded. Contact my office for additional information or assistance with filing an application. Information is also available online here. House Passes Bill to Relieve Teacher Shortages ![]() By a unanimous vote, the House recently advanced legislation to address teacher shortages in Pennsylvania. House Bill 27 would extend a law passed during the COVID-19 pandemic that gave Pennsylvania schools flexibility in the hiring of substitute teachers. The bill would make permanent the ability for retired educators and staff to work as substitutes in our public schools for more than 20 days without any impact on their pension, as well as the use of locally issued temporary certification for substitutes for people who have completed the educator preparation program but have not yet graduated. The measure would also extend the portions of the law that allow for classroom monitor permits and prospective teachers who are in the process of completing their educator preparation program to also serve as substitutes until the end of the 2025-26 school year. The measure now goes to the Senate for consideration. Low-Income Water Assistance Program Now Available ![]() The Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) is now accepting applications to help qualified Pennsylvanians maintain access to drinking water and wastewater services. Funded by the federal government, LIHWAP provides eligible households one crisis grant for drinking water service and one crisis grant for wastewater service of up to $2,500 each. Crisis situations can include past-due water bills, termination of utility service, and having received notice that service will be shut off within the next 60 days. Receiving utility assistance through another program like the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) does not prevent a household from receiving assistance through LIHWAP if the applicant meets LIHWAP eligibility criteria. If a household has previously received LIHWAP for one water type, they cannot receive another LIHWAP grant for the same water type but could receive it for the other. More information is available here. ![]() Fun for All Ages Awaits at PA Fairs Summer is in full swing, and so is Pennsylvania fair season! Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) alerted drivers that work on a high friction surface application project impacting routes in Juniata, McKean, and Mifflin Counties got underway today. High friction surface applications improve skid resistance and enhance safety for motorists at the application sites.
Crews will start work Saturday, July 15, on Route 74 in Turbett Township, Juniata County, approximately two miles north of the Juniata/Perry County line. While they apply the high friction surface treatments, drivers should expect to encounter flaggers in the roadway providing traffic control. PennDOT urges drivers to build extra travel time into their schedules as it expects short travel delays.
Crews plan to begin the application process Monday, July 17, on Route 219 in Sergeant Township, McKean County, approximately two-thirds of a mile north of Route 3003 (Coontown Road). Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control. Drivers should anticipate short delays.
The final application site impacted by this project is on Route 322 in Brown Township, Mifflin County, approximately a mile from the Reedsville interchange. The contractor will reduce Route 322 to one lane by placing concrete barriers while completing this work. PennDOT will issue an update before the contractor starts operations at this location.
Due to the nature of these applications, work cannot occur in the rain. The contractor will reschedule in the case of rain.
Overall work on the project includes applying high friction surface treatment, epoxy-based surface treatments, and other miscellaneous construction at the sites listed above. The Truesdell Corporation is the contractor for this $640,000 project.

Pretending
By
Pastor B.J. Knefley
Growing up I must have had a vivid imagination. I used to wonder where it came from as we didn’t have television when I was very young. But then I realized that we did have radio and I can remember sitting around as a family listening to different mystery programs. Some of my imagination created some very dangerous situations. I once tried to hang my younger sister. Why? Well simply because she was a cattle rustler and I had caught her red handed and the punishment for rustlers? Hanging. A State Trooper just happened to be driving by and stopped me. I got in trouble for that one and my sister continues to remind me of that even to today. Another event was when I pushed my sister out of the hay mound. She thought she could fly so I was only helping her prove her theory. Before you ask, yes it was the same sister that I tried to hang. I got in trouble again.
There’s an old song that was sung by the Platters called “The Great Pretender”. If you’ve never heard it, you should. This pretender is the one who pretends through life. Presenting and living one way when the exact opposite is true. We all pretend at times, but some take it to the extreme. We become so good at pretending that we fool ourselves.
Pretending is like wearing masks. When we’re pretending, we put on masks to convey a persona that isn’t real. We do it often to hide pain, shame, guilt, fear and a host of other emotions. We may give clues to our real self, but most don’t recognize them. Those clues are often cries for help, too often they go unheard. It’s sad when you think about it. Sad that some don’t feel that they can be themselves. They feel that they must pretend in order to be accepted or liked. The problem is it’s a very unhealthy place to be. So, what’s the solution? The most important thing a pretender can do is to find someone that they can be real with. Someone that they don’t have to pretend with. This can be scary but necessary. Whatever lies we’ve bought into have to be broken. Who we are needs to be expressed. Jesus told his followers to deny themselves and take up his cross and follow Him. You can’t deny yourself when you’re already in denial. You must step out of the hole you’ve created for yourself. Think about it.

Donny was born in Ridgway on July 24, 1957, a son to the late Eugene and Hallie Sue Ener Leader. On November 17, 1989 in Johnsonburg, he married Betsy Thiry and she survives.
A lifelong resident of Johnsonburg, Donny was a 1975 graduate of Johnsonburg Are High School. He was a member of the Johnsonburg Elks Lodge 612 and Central Hose Co. Nummy loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and anything with four legs.
He also enjoyed spending time with his extended family at “the garage” where he spent a great deal of his free time and eagerly awaited someone to drop off a project for him to tinker on. He was an avid collector, amassing collections of pocket watches, knives and guns.
Upon his retirement from Domtar in 2014 after 38 years of service, he furthered his passion for being a maintenance mechanic and was always tinkering and repairing everything from toys and watches to cars and trucks. Donald was a mechanic by trade and a jack of all things for pleasure. There wasn’t a thing that had wheels or ran on fuel that he couldn’t fix. Even though a failing heart took him away from this world, his loving heart will leave an everlasting impression on his family and friends.
Donny is survived by his wife Betsy at home, his children; Cory Leader of Pittsburgh, Angel, Mrs. Joe Fritz of St. Marys, Chad Leader and his wife Annie of Ridgway and Donny Leader and his companion Thea Distler of St. Marys and his grandchildren; Isaac and Halle Fritz and Benjamin and Lottie Mae Leader. He is also survived by sisters Linda, Mrs. John Tile of York and Mary Ann Myers of Rasselas and a brother Dave Leader and his wife Jeannine of Johnsonburg, several nieces and nephews and his beloved pets.
In addition to his parents, Donny is predeceased by a brother Tommy Leader, his mother-in-law Ellen E. Evans just this past Friday and is now working on cars again with his best friend, Scott Horchen.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Donald “Nummy” Leader, in conjunction with the celebration for his mother-in-law Ellen E. Evans, will be conducted at Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg on Tuesday July 18, 2023 at 10 AM with Fr. Wilson, Pastor as celebrant. Following a storyline like that of his beloved Pittsburgh Pirates, the 2023 campaign of Ken Coppolo ended sooner than we all had hoped.
Kenneth J. Coppolo, 73, of St. Marys, PA passed away following a brief illness Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at his daughter’s home with his family and grand dogs by his side.
Ken was born March 1, 1950, in St. Marys, son of the late Gerald and Mary Rose Coppolo. He was a lifelong resident of St. Marys and a graduate of Elk County Christian High School, Class of 1969.
On October 18, 1975, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, he married Jeanne M. Sorg, who survives. They were blessed to share 47 years of marriage and friendship.
Along with his loving wife, Ken is survived by daughter Carisa Coppolo and her partner, Trent Mason, of Erie, daughter Julie Lapiska and her husband Andy Lapiska, also of Erie; his four grandchildren: Kenna, Reagan, Lucas, and Nathan; his sister, Vicki Coppolo of St. Marys; and by his sisters-in-law and their spouses – Mary and Jef Fritz, Sally and Rick Gabler, Nancy and Nick Budd; as well as his many nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
Ken was a parishioner of Queen of the World Church and truly loved to work. A lifelong business owner and entrepreneur, he was most committed to his business as an independent contractor, Coppolo Builders, which recently celebrated its fiftieth year. While his construction projects stand strong around St. Marys and beyond, the most important thing that Ken built was a strong family. Nothing made him prouder than seeing his daughters and grandchildren succeed on stage, at sports, and by building loving families of their own.
A selfless man, Ken lived a life guided by kindness and his idea of F.A.M.I.L.Y. (Forget About Me, I Love You). Ken’s “family” extended to include the countless friends who he loved—and brought the light of joy to—with his unwavering smile and sense of humor. He instilled these strong values and work ethic in his grandchildren who will miss him dearly.
Let’s go Bucs! We love ‘ya “Hon!”
