Pennsylvania’s Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) is available on some state game lands for the first time in the 2023-24 hunting seasons.
Through DMAP, hunters can get permits that allow them to harvest antlerless deer – one per tag – on the specific property for which the permit was issued.
DMAP permits for the 2023-24 deer seasons go on sale at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14.
DMAP has been around for years, but previously was offered only on other public lands and private lands to help landowners achieve land use goals and/or to limit the spread of chronic wasting disease. But it’s needed on some state game lands now as well, said Game Commission Forestry Division Chief Paul Weiss.

Women’s Giving Circle (WGC) is a project of the McKean County Community Foundation that connects charitable-minded women with each other for a very affordable way to make a greater impact in their communities. WGC holds two gatherings each year for members and their guests: a social event, and an annual meeting where they award grants to area nonprofits.
Members and guests recently experienced an incredible evening enjoying culinary creations from garden grown produce at their 2023 special event, “The Chef’s Table at Eddie’s on Main” in Port Allegany. Little Mountain Winery added to the festivities with wine tasting to complement the delicious food. Good friends, good food, and good times were enjoyed by 36 women who support the work of WGC. Angela Erway, YWCA volunteer, spoke about the good work they have been able to do with the grant dollars they received last fall from WGC.
Women’s Giving Circle of McKean County is made up of ordinary women of all backgrounds and financial means who want to enhance life for women and families. Each member donates a minimum of $100 per year. WGC pools these individual donations together and award grants at their annual meeting to area non-profits to support worthy programs and projects.
This community-minded group invites all McKean County women to join them in their charitable endeavors. 2023 memberships will be accepted until October 1. Grants will be awarded following the close of the current membership year. WGC is a relatively young organization, established in 2018. To date, the women of WGC have awarded a total of $23,800 in grants to McKean County nonprofit organizations.
The McKean County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of the Northern Alleghenies, is a non-profit organization that works with donors to help them meet their charitable goals.

Colonel Christopher Paris, commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police, today announced the commencement of a pilot program designed to ensure department readiness for implementing body-worn cameras.
“The public rightfully expects their interactions with police be safe, respectful, and constitutional, and I believe the use of body-worn cameras demonstrates that the Pennsylvania State Police is committed to providing faithful and honest law enforcement services,” said Colonel Paris.
“In addition to providing transparency and accountability, body-worn cameras document evidence in criminal cases and present opportunities to enhance training, just like the mobile video recording cameras we began using in patrol cars two decades ago.”
Colonel Paris said patrol troopers assigned to Troop H, Carlisle will wear the cameras while on duty. As a cost reduction measure, the department uses a shared service model. Eighteen cameras allotted to Carlisle get passed between troopers during shift changes.
The 60-day trial run allows the department to determine best practices and policies and identify any needs for additional equipment or software features. When the pilot program concludes, the department plans to implement body-worn cameras at all of its 87 patrol stations.
The department entered into a five-year contract with Arizona-based Axon to provide body-worn cameras. Carlisle was selected as the test location because its geographic area is representative of the communities served by the Pennsylvania State Police. Additionally, the station is close to the PSP Bureau of Communications and Information Services, the bureau tasked with monitoring the pilot program, in Harrisburg.
