Local nonprofits and faith-based organizations in need of funding to enhance an existing program or to help start a new program are encouraged to apply for a grant from the $250,000 in funding to be distributed in 2024 through the McKean County Commissioners and McKean County Community Foundation (MCCF) partnership.

Applicants are invited to attend an informational meeting and grant writing training on Tuesday, January 16. The meeting will be available either by Zoom or in person at the Seneca Highlands IU9 office in Smethport at 4:30 pm. Organizations are asked to please register by emailing mccf@mckeancountyfoundation.org.

Introduction to Microsoft Word (Word I) is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the basic features and functionalities of Microsoft Word. Throughout the class, you will learn how to create, edit, and format documents using various tools and techniques, such as the Quick Access toolbar, the Format Painter, and the Spelling and Grammar Checker. Topics covered include document formatting, page layout, undoing/redoing commands, setting margins and page orientation, inserting tables, making bulleted and numbered lists, using templates, and much more. By the end of the course, you will have a solid foundation in using Microsoft Word for various personal and professional purposes.

This class, taught by Ron Keeney, Professor in the Computer Science Department at Alfred State College of Technology, is scheduled for Friday, January 19, 2024 (Word I) from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Education Council’s Coudersport office at 5 Water Street. Belmont, NY – The Allegany County Democratic Committee (ACDC) invites all registered Democrats to attend its first monthly “Coffee with Democrats” of the year on Saturday, January 13^th in Andover. Eliot Ness Museum

The Eliot Ness Museum would like to thank these generous and thoughtful donors for their support during its recent 2024 fundraising campaign. It’s support like this that assures a bright future for the Eliot Ness Museum:

BRADFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will mark the Jan. 15 birthday of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a week of social justice activities.

            “Dr. King believed in the power of service to others, emphasizing that everyone has a responsibility to contribute to their communities for collective impact,” said Angela Wolfe, associate dean of student affairs. “One aspect of his legacy that remains particularly relevant is the importance of community leadership through volunteerism. It reminds us of the importance of service to others and volunteering not only honors his memory but also serves as a catalyst for positive change.”

            While the university is closed and classes are not in session on Jan. 15, students will travel to Canticle Farm in Allegany, N.Y., to work on the Community Supported Agriculture vegetable farm. Other students will take part in a service project at the Bradford Ecumenical Home.

The Game Commission is asking for the public’s help finding turkey flocks to trap for ongoing turkey projects.

Beginning next week, Pennsylvanians are encouraged to report the location of any turkey flocks they see. Information is being collected online at https://pgcdatacollection.pa.gov/TurkeyBroodSurvey from Jan. 15 through March 15.

Visitors to that webpage will be asked to provide the date of the sighting, the location, and the type of land (public, private or unknown) where birds are seen, among other things.
