Howard E. McLean, age 84 of Elkland, PA
Howard E. McLean, age 84 of Elkland, PA passed away on Saturday, December 16 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born on November 2, 1939 in Troupsburg, NY to the late Edgar and Mary (Davis) McLean. He graduated from Elkland High School in 1958. On August 14, 1966 Howard married Sonja Lou Moore, spending 57 loving years building a life together.
After 34 years as a class A pipefitter for Corning Glass Works, he retired and opened his own plumbing and contracting business. It was at this time he became an intricate part in the construction of Finelli’s village, which is so well known in the area. He was known as being a jack of all trades and a master of many.
Howard was a former assistant fire chief of the Elkland Volunteer Fire Department and a past member of the Cowanesque Valley Rod And Gun Club. He also was a member of the Army Reserves from 1957 – 1964.
Lois Cox Churchill, 86, Elkland, PA
Our mother, Lois Cox Churchill, died on December 15, 2023 after a long and full life.
She was born on September 4, 1937 to the late George and Mildred (Schlock) Cox. Lois graduated from Elkland High School, Mansfield State Teachers’ College and Alfred University.
She taught math at Elkland High School for over 30 years. She was an advocate for teachers and a mentor and adviser to students.
Lois was dedicated to her family and was well loved. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. Richard Churchill; her daughter, Terri Churchill Monks; her son-in- law Timothy Monks and her brother Richard Cox.
Anita Louise Graham, age 86 of Tioga, PA
Anita Louise Graham, age 86 of Tioga, PA passed on December 9, 2023, at her home surrounded by family.
Born on February 21, 1937 on Beech Hill in the town of Willing, NY. She was the daughter to the late Richard and Mildred (Latten) Cornelius. Anita was a 1954 Wellsville High School graduate. Henry Graham married Anita on December 3, 1955, in Shongo, NY and they spent 68 loving years building their family and home together.
She retired from the Tioga Citizens and Northern Bank in 1994. She was a past member of the Tioga County Republican Women, Tioga Trinity United Presbyterian Church, and Farmington Hill Grange and she also served as Judge of Election for Farmington Township.
Galeton Centertown Park Is Bright for Christmas
Galeton is ready for Christmas. In the photo, you can see the top portion of the band house is lit with a tree and wreaths on all four sides illuminated at night by spotlights shining upon the structure. At night, the lighted Mega tree reflects on Berger Lake. Thank you to Chamber members Nancy and Brad Snyder for erecting the tree each year. Nearly six-foot-tall stars flank the tree to give a soft warmth to the scene. This easy 3.0-mile round trip hike on fairly level trails will take place on our interpretive Commissioner Run Trail in the Susquehannock State Forest.
Learn the importance of forest health and management and how that relates to wildlife habitat and water quality while we explore.
Hike will be held rain or shine.
Dress for the weather (layers recommended) and bring water.
Well-behaved dogs on short leashes are welcome.

The holiday season is right around the corner, a time packed full of gift-giving, shopping extravaganzas, parties, and activities galore. While this season is meant to bring feelings of love and cheer, it can also be one of the most stressful times, putting added strain on your heart.
Stress is a part of life, and everyone responds to stress a little differently. While stress itself is not going to set you up for heart disease, your behavior and the way you deal with stress can play a role in heart health. When you experience stress, your body releases cortisol and adrenaline to initiate the “fight or flight” response. This reaction gives you a burst of energy and strength to fight off or run away from a perceived threat. But if stress is always present and the body is constantly preparing to fight or flee, that elevated cortisol level can lead to anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and weight gain. It also can lead indirectly to high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

Smethport Christmas Ride Was A “WOW.”
What can we say about our Christmas Ride other than “WOW”. You guys were awesome. The lights and decorations were just amazing.
We need to surely thank everyone that helped pull this off. Our committee that helps organize it all. All of you that made cookies, donated our paper products, coffee and hot Choclate. Dunkin donuts for the donuts. Our Judges, I surely wouldn’t have wanted to have their job.
Our prizes were donated by Mckean Co E-Sales, Leah Frederick and Nancy Rathbun (Howard Hannan) Myrnas Mercantile, Buchanan Brothers and Kathryn Taylor. The firehall and fire police, the Crosby help that came to direct traffic. Tom Huntoon for the great pictures. My neighbor, who is one of the best, our Sheriff, Dan Woods. Boro council for allowing this to happen and our very own favorite policeman Kevin Robert Murray and Brian Swanson.
Solomons Word, WESB, and the Bradford Era for getting the word out there. Your generous donations for Mckean County Children’s Advocacy Center of McKean County and Smethport Food Bank amounted to $502. Giving each $251. What a way of spreading that Christmas Cheer.
If our calculations are right, we may have ridden over 8 miles. Hope I didn’t forget anyone. Lastly, a huge shout out to the 90+ machines we had and for making our 2023 ride something we will remember for a long time. See you next year. (Or earlier) Thank you again.

PITT-BRADFORD TO CLOSE FOR WINTER BREAK
BRADFORD, Pa. — The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, including Hanley Library, will be closed Dec. 22 through Jan. 1, 2024, for winter break.
The Marilyn Horne Museum and Gift Shop in Marilyn Horne Hall on Veterans Square in downtown Bradford will be closed from Dec. 24 through Jan. 7, 2024.
The museum café will be closed Dec. 24-25, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, 2024. Hours from Dec. 26 through Dec. 30 are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Pitt-Bradford offices will reopen Jan. 2, 2024, with the first day of the spring semester set for Jan. 8, 2024.

Rhoda Ruth Silverberg, 93, formerly of 22 Walker Avenue, Bradford & Centennial, CO
Rhoda Ruth Silverberg, 93, formerly of 22 Walker Avenue, Bradford & Centennial, CO, passed away peacefully, Monday, December 18, 2023, in her residence at the Morningstar Jordan, surrounded by her four children.
Born January 30, 1930, in Corona Queens, she was a daughter of Meyer and Sophie (Miller) Gruskin.
She graduated with honors from Bradford Area High School Class of 1947 and remained active in the alumni association for more than sixty years.
On August 13, 1949, in Buffalo NY, she married Morris “Moe” Silverberg who preceded her in death on September 4,1991.
Rhoda and her loving husband, Moe were well-known in town as the owners of Silverberg Meats grocery store on Summer Street. After the store closed, Rhoda served as National Advertising Manager of the Bradford Era. She later worked as a secretary to the law office of Joseph Graff.

Causer, Dush Announce Nearly $1.6 Million in Infrastructure Grants
Bradford, Hamlin Twp., Roulette Twp. & Driftwood Get State Grants
HARRISBURG – Four communities in the 67th Legislative District were awarded state grants for key infrastructure projects, Rep. Marty Causer (R-Cameron/McKean/Potter) and Sen. Cris Dush (R-25) announced Tuesday.
“It’s so important to make sure we invest in our water and sewer systems to protect public health and safety in our communities,” Causer said. “I was pleased to advocate for these grants and bring this money back to our district.”
“Water and sewer projects can often be very expensive. This grant funding will help these 25th District communities ensure necessary projects are completed for the betterment of the health and safety of their residents,” said Dush.
The grants were awarded as follows:
- Bradford City Water Authority, McKean County: $265,000 toward replacement of the Route 219 Water Pump Station in Bradford Township and $488,410 for extension of a water line from St. Francis Drive to Lafferty Hollow Industrial Park.
- Hamlin Township, McKean County: $153,340 for replacement of a control panel at a wastewater treatment plant in in the township.
- Roulette Township, Potter County: $391,000 for installation of a new well and wellhouse in the township.
- Driftwood Borough, Cameron County: $285,175 for water system improvements.
The grants were approved Tuesday by the Commonwealth Financing Authority and are funded from multiple sources, with the largest being federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) money appropriated for recreation and conservation as part of previous Pennsylvania state budgets.
Seneca Highlands CTC’s “Student of the Week”
Lukas Knutson, a 10th grader from Port Allegany is the SHCTC’s “Student of the Week.”
Lukas is a new addition to the CTC Homeland Security Program. He has recently moved to the area from Ponta, Oklahoma.
Lukas has good grades and actively participates in class discussions with a positive attitude. His interests outside of school are woodworking and anything mechanical. He hopes to be able to pursue a career in firefighting after graduation.
Owlett Legislation Would Require Geopolitical Risk Analysis for Public Fund Investments
HARRISBURG – Noting substantial investor losses of those private funds invested in Russia and Belarus following the invasion of Ukraine, Rep. Clint Owlett (R-Tioga/Bradford) said he will soon introduce legislation requiring an examination of geopolitical risk be conducted as part of the investment analysis when the state Treasury or Pennsylvania’s public pension funds invest in the financial assets in foreign countries.
Combined the Treasury and public pension funds invest $150 billion in taxpayer assets.

One Vehicle Crash In Bolivar
On December 19 at 9:47 am, Bolivar and Richburg Fire and Ambulance were dispatched to a one-vehicle accident on the Horse Run Rd. Vehicle in a ditch. Shinglehouse ambulance has been placed on standby.
Missing Juvenile Located in Fox Township
Elkland Search and Rescue
At 7:55pm Monday evening, at the request of Pa State Police Ridgway Barracks, Elkland Search and Rescue was requested to search for a missing male juvenile in the Fox Township area. Chief 3, Fox Townships Fire Chief was immediately requested to meet us on scene to establish a Unified Command with Pa State Police and Elklands Command Staff to start the search process.
Once the initial search plans were in place, Chief 3 requested his department to respond to their station and the search tasks were implemented between all the emergency services on scene.
A few hours later the missing individual was located and returned to the Command Post. At the Command Post, the individual was initiated treatment for very mild hypothermia. His care was transferred to Fox Township Ambulance and the individual was released to the parents.
Elkland Search and Rescue responded with 18 members and all available equipment.
We appreciate the communities concern and willingness to help. If you are interested in joining our team, the next meeting is January the 9th at 7:30 pm. We are always looking for additional team members and we are more than happy to train individuals to help us search as our team members when someone is missing or lost.
New Emergency Radio System in McKean County is Operational

The McKean County Department of Emergency Services recently celebrated the official rollout of the new emergency radio communications system in the county. The county entered into a partnership with the state and joined the statewide radio network administered by the PA State Police. I was glad to join the McKean County Commissioners, DES personnel, PA State Police and county emergency responders at this event. Congratulations and thank you to everyone for all your hard work on this important project!

Blair Technology Solutions is now hosting a Broadcastify Radio Feed that will service the residents and visitors of McKean County.

In November the McKean County Department of Emergency Services cutover their main communications from Analog Motorola Radios to Digital P25 Motorola Radios, effectively making the radio coverage for local Police, Fire and EMS much better then before. However this change left many police and fire scanners unusable.
Blair Technology Solutions has purchased over $2000 in equipment to make a Radio Feed that residents can use to listen to see “where the sirens are going” and for local first responders to listen to incidents around the county without having to buy and program expensive digital scanners.
This feed is the only feed servicing McKean County that has the complete list of digital Fire and EMS Talk Groups and the remaining analog channels that will remain in use.
This feed is located in Bradford with line of sight to one of the county simulcast towers.
