Belmont, N.Y. – Allegany County has recently seen an increase in respiratory virus activity like RSV (Respiratory  Syncytial Virus) and Flu, especially among children. The UR Jones Memorial Hospital’s Sandra Watkins, BSN,  RN, Vice President of Patient Care Services reports, “Respiratory illnesses have been rising in our area. Our ED  volume is increasing due to this phenomenon. A majority of the cases are able to be discharged back into the  community.”

Troopers Charge Man With “Drug Delivery Resulting in Death” of Kane Man in May

(KANE, Pennsylvania):  McKean County District Attorney  Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer reports that on November 16, 2022, charges were filed in regards to a Kane man’s death earlier this year on Pine Street in Kane.

Trooper Eric Thompson charged  28 year old Paul MCMAHON, currently of the McKean County Jail, with Drug Delivery Resulting in death, Involuntary Manslaughter, 3 counts of Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance, 3 counts Criminal Use of a Communication Facility, and Reckless Endangering Another Person.

The complaint alleges that, on 05/06/2022, a 35 year old male was found unresponsive at 10 Pine Street.  He was pronounced deceased.

Members from Kane Volunteer Fire Department, Kane Borough Police Department, Emergy Care Ambulance and the McKean County District Attorney responded to the scene.  The District Attorney requested the Pennsylvania State Police investigate the death.

The complaint alleges that the investigation showed communication between McMahon and the victim regarding the sale of drugs to the victim three times between May 4 and May 6, including the last delivery to the victim shortly before his death.  The cause of death was rule fentanyl toxicity. 

MCMAHON was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge David Engman who set bail at $1 million.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for November 28 at Magisterial District Judge David Engman’s court in Kane.

MCMAHON remains incarcerated.

John “Chuck” Charles Miller Sr., 74, of Coudersport PA

John “Chuck” Charles Miller Sr., 74, of Coudersport PA, died unexpectedly on November 5, 2022.

Chuck was born on January 5, 1948, to Rev. John A. Miller and Ann Miller in Hoboken NJ.

Chuck worked at Kennametal in Latrobe PA for 22 years. He was a city councilman and a volunteer fireman for Ligonier PA borough. He raised his family of 3 children Chuck, Chrisie, and Michael in Ligonier.

He retired to Coudersport and loved the area where he raised his 4th child, Jesse. Those who loved Chuck, know the man who loved his kids, siblings, and his dogs and animals. He loved to hunt and fish. He could build and fix anything, He was a “Jack of all Trades”. This was his most impressive trait.

Chuck is survived by his children John C. Miller Jr., Christine A. (Sean) Barber, Michael D. (Heidi) Miller, Jesse (Nakia) Miller; four grandchildren, Hannah Miller, Mallory Miller, Cullen Barber, and Kelsey Barber; one great granddaughter, Jocelyn Small; his siblings, Deborah A. Miller, Peter D. Miller, Rebecca J. Krebsbach and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, the Rev. John A. Miller and Ann Miller.

The family prays that he can rest in peace knowing that he was loved by his family.

In keeping with Chuck’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral services.

To accommodate the schedule of Gator events this weekend, the Fall Play, Clue:  High School Edition, is moving to the following dates:  Saturday, November 19 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, November 20 at 2 p.m.  Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for adults and will be sold at the door.  Doors open half an hour before show time.  

Based on the iconic 1985 Paramount movie which was inspired by the classic Hasbro board game, Clue is a hilarious farce-meets-murder mystery. The tale begins at a remote mansion, where six mysterious guests assemble for an unusual dinner party where murder and blackmail are on the menu. When their host turns up dead, they all become suspects. Led by Wadsworth – the butler, Miss Scarlett, Professor Plum, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock and Colonel Mustard, Clue is the comedy whodunit that will leave both cult-fans and newcomers in stitches as they try to figure out…WHO did it, WHERE, and with WHAT!

Onalee R. Thurst, of 2575 Route 305, Cuba, , NY

Onalee R. Thurst, of 2575 Route 305, Cuba, , NY passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2022, at Olean General Hospital.

Born June 8, 1948, in Hornell, she was the daughter of Gilbert and Doris Welch Crum. She married Martin Thurst, who predeceased her.

Onalee was a waitress for many years at Spring Hill Restaurant and later she worked as a prep cook for Spragues.

She was a longtime member of Clarksville Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary and enjoyed crossword puzzles in her free time.

Onalee is survived by her mom, of Shinglehouse, Pa.; three children, Christina Foster of Cuba, Marcina Thurst of Cuba and Shane (Stefanie) Thurst of Olean; three grandchildren, Marrissa (Scott) Millea, Juliann Foster and Cameron Thurst; four great-grandchildren, Colton Millea, Guinevere Millea, Spencer Foster-Cook and Avalynn Moore; one sister, Rhonda Sheppard; three brothers, Tom (Carol) Crum, Doug (Donna) Crum and Merle (Darlene) Crum; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her dad; and one brother, Wayne “Skip” Crum.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Memorials, if desired, may be made at any Community Bank to the Town of Clarksville Playground Fund, “Play it Forward.”

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 51 S. Main St., Portville.

The Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library is excited to introduce the Cameron County Jigsaw Puzzle Swap. The Library invites area residents to come to the library on the first Saturday of each month, beginning December 3, 2022, for a puzzle swap from 12-2pm each month.

Bring your puzzles to trade with other puzzle lovers in the community. Any puzzles with missing pieces MUST be clearly marked with the number missing.

If you’re new to puzzles, the library has some to get you started.

Shop Small Week in Cameron County

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce and C&N Bank teaming up to encourage you to spend a week shopping in Cameron County.  From Shop Small Saturday through Christmas in the Wilds spend $100 and you can win Chamber Bucks.  Each time you purchase a gift, tool, eat at a restaurant, fill your tank with fuel, service your vehicle have your paper stamped.  Fill it and bring it to the chamber to be entered in the drawing.  You may fill more than one paper.

“Studies show money spent at local businesses stay in the local community.  It allows businesses to hire employees, or make donations to community causes,” says Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Solak.  Instead of just one day of shopping local, the chamber wanted to encourage people to shop local for the entire week and tally the money that stays in Cameron County.  

C&N Bank is providing $300.00 in chamber buck gift certificates.  Entry forms are available in person at businesses or electronically by contacting the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce at 814-486-4314.

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce along with its members ready to #DeckoutCameronCounty this Christmas season.  The 40+ foot tree donated by Charles & Marlene Zimmer will arrive at the site of the former Dolan Hotel lot in center of Emporium Saturday Novemberr 19.  Motorists are asked to be alert Saturday morning as the transportation of the tree will fill Routes 155, 120 and East Fourth Street.  Parking will be limited in downtown Emporium Saturday morning.  Cutting is to begin at 10am by Smoker Logging at the property in the area of Route 155 and Four Mile.  Everyone is invited downtown while the lights are strung.

During the week leading to Thanksgiving Flowers N Things will decorate the eight flowerpots on Fourth Street along with the baskets topping the poles which had housed parking meters. 

#ShopSmall Saturday has been expanded to include an entire week.  C&N Bank has donated $300 in chamber bucks.  Shoppers are encouraged to spend $100 during the week November 26 through December 3.  They bring the completed paper to the chamber, and they are entered into a drawing for the chamber bucks.  The drawing will be Saturday December 3 during Christmas in the Wilds festivities.  The Emporium Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will host a craft show and spaghetti dinner on Saturday November 26.

Friday December 2 kicks off Christmas in the Wilds.  An outdoor movie will be hosted by the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce.  The movie begins at 5pm.  More than 15 floats will light the parade route on East Fourth Steet to West Fourth Street and end on Woodland Avenue.  The parade steps off at 7pm.  Smoker Logging and Flowers N Things sponsoring the parade with prizes to the best float in the following categories:  Family, organization, and business.  Following the parade the 40+ tall Christmas tree will be lit by Santa. 

Saturday begins with breakfast with Santa hosted by the Emporium Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.  The $5 cost will be waived for children under the age of 3.  Santa will be available for pictures and give children a treat.  Santa is relying on his elves from Seneca Resources to bring his reindeer to Saturday’s event.  A Christmas Time will open its doors for the first time this season Saturday afternoon.  At the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce drawings will be held for #shopsmall gift certificates and the basket fundraiser by the Cameron County Quarterback Club.

Sunday pet owners are encouraged to bring their 4-legged family members for pet pictures with Santa to A Christmas Time located at Sarah Jane’s.  The event begins at 2pm.

Christmas events continue at Sarah Jane’s A Christmas Time each weekend through December 17.  Two paint & sips will be held along with a visit from the library elf on December 9 at 6pm.

Rex Ranger HACKETT, 73, of Scio, NY

Rex Ranger HACKETT, 73, of Scio, NY, died Friday, November 11, 2022 in Canandaigua VA Medical Center.  

Born August 12, 1949, in Olean, he was the son of Stanley and Bernice Singer Hackett. 

A Vietnam Veteran, he served honorably with the US Army from 1967 – 1970. 

Rex was employed as a security guard by Clow Valve Foundry in Oskaloosa, IA.  

Surviving are:  a brother, Stanley Singer of Caneadea;  nieces, Rebecca Hackett of NC, Brenda Singer of KY, and Laurie Greeson of Little Genesee;  and several cousins including, James R. (Lynda) Stuck of Bolivar and Ken (Carol) Stonemetz of Houghton.  

He was predeceased by a brother, Randol E. Hackett.  

A graveside service and military rites will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, November 18, 2022 in Bath National Cemetery. 

Memorials may be made to any veteran’s service organization.

Sara R. “Sally” Burkett, 91, of Derrick City, PA

Sara R. “Sally” Burkett, 91, of Derrick City, PA peacefully passed away unexpectedly at her home on Saturday, November 12, 2022.

She was born on June 15, 1931in Bradford, a daughter of the late A.O. and Elinor Meachem Alexander.

She was a 1949 graduate of the Bradford Senior High School.

On April 3, 1954 in Reno, NV; she married Howard R. Burkett who preceded her in death on July 11, 2012.

Sally was a proud wife of an Air Force officer who loved taking care of her family and baking; she was especially famous for making her peanut butter cookies.

She is survived by one daughter, Susan D. (Dr. David) Godfrey of Bradford; two sons, Howard R. (Julie) Burkett of Brackney and Jeffrey O. (Nancy) Burkett of Hallstead; one brother, John Alexander of Bradford; one sister, Karen Calderwood of Bradford; four grandchildren, Howard D. Burkett, Michael B. Burkett, Jessica N. (Michael) Misciagno and Alexander D. (Kimberly) Burkett; seven great grandchildren, Michaela, Bailey, Peyton, Chloe and Samantha Burkett and Dominic and Erik Misciagno and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband she was also preceded in death by four brothers, Mahlon “Fat” Alexander, James Alexander, Gerald “Meach” Alexander and Samuel Alexander and two sisters, Molly McAndrews and Elinor Wasden

A private celebration of her life will be held at the convenience of the family.

Donald Edward Gosnell, 84, of Farmville, VA, formerly of Coudersport

Donald Edward Gosnell, 84, of Farmville, VA, formerly of Coudersport, passed away Friday November 11, 2022 at the Clifton House in Amelia Courthouse, VA. 

He was born April 29, 1938 in Youngstown, OH to Kenneth and Mae (McDonald) Gosnell.  He graduated from high school, and on June 6, 1959 he married Betty Ann Falk, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage.  He owned and operated Gosnell’s Plumbing and Heating in Coudersport. 

Donald liked to golf with his wife (each of them scored two holes in one), was a member and past president of the Coudersport Volunteer Fire Department, a life member of Moose Lodge 460, and a 63 year member of the Masonic Lodge.

Donald is survived by his wife:  Betty Ann Gosnell of Farmville, VA; a son:  Donald K. (Ann) Gosnell of Farmville, VA; two grandsons:  Jason (Shemeka) Daughenbaugh and William (Amanda) Gosnell; a granddaughter: Heather (James) Wilkins; and seven great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends and family are invited to the Thomas E. Fickinger Funeral Home, 210 N. East Street, Coudersport, PA to pay tribute to Donald’s life from 10:00am – 11:00am Saturday November 19, 2022 with a funeral to follow in the funeral home.  Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery.  T

PennDOT Reduces Speed Limits on Interstate 99

Clearfield, PA – Due to wintry conditions moving through the region, PennDOT is temporarily reducing the speed limit on some roads in the region.

PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph on the following highways:

  • The entirety of Interstate 99
  • Interstate 80 from mile marker 97 to mile marker 194

PennDOT Reduces Speed Limits on Interstate 80 in Clearfield County

Clearfield, PA – Due to wintry conditions moving through the region, PennDOT is temporarily reducing the speed limit on some roads in the region.

PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph on the following highways:

  • Interstate 80 from mile marker 97 to mile marker 123

On roadways with speed restrictions, commercial vehicles not affected by restrictions on these or other roadways must move to the right lane.

Although PennDOT crews have been treating roadways, the department’s primary goal is to keep roads passable, not completely free of ice and snow. PennDOT will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.

At 3:30 PM on Tuesday, Snow has moved into the lower areas of our coverage area. Multiple accidents & stuck vehicles have disrupted normal traffic flows.

A head-on crash on Rt. 120 near the Elk/Cameron County line is being dispatched. If you don’t have to travel, stay home.

In McKean County, tractor-trailers are stuck on the hills until PennDOT can get to them. Rew has been dispatched to shut down the Bradford side of Rew Hill.
