Lewis S. Schaub, 97, of Coudersport, PA
Lewis S. Schaub, 97, of Coudersport, PA passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at UPMC-Cole, Coudersport. He was born on August 29, 1926, in Coudersport, the son of the late Albert and Dorothy (Davey) Schaub. On June 19, 1948, he married the former Louise McNulty and celebrated 72 years of marriage until her passing on March 10, 2021. He was born in the old Cole Hospital, now Cole Manor, and spent his last days living at Cole Manor.
Lewis was a graduate of Coudersport High School, Class of 1945. He graduated from Lock Haven State Teachers College in 1949 and earned his master’s degree in education from St. Bonaventure University in 1971. Lewis started his teaching career in Austin, then in Westfield (now Cowanesque Valley), and then for the Coudersport School District where he taught History, later became a coach, Athletic Director, and Principal. Lewis was the first person to serve as a teacher, coach, Athletic Director, and Principal at the same time. After retirement, he served as Interim Principal for Port Allegany, Austin, completing a 38 year career in education.
Lewis was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Coudersport, and at one time served as an Elder and a Deacon. He also served on the Coudersport Recreation Board.
Lewis loved sports and was an avid golfer. He was a 50-year member of the Coudersport Golf Club, where he served as a Director and Past President, a member of the Tioga County Sports Hall of Fame, former Big 30 Committee member, and a District 9 Basketball Committee member. Lewis was an official for both football and basketball, and he enjoyed coaching baseball, football, and golf. He was a mentor to many new and aspiring golfers. Lewis also enjoyed hunting, walking, and watching old movies on TV.
Lewis is survived by a daughter, Nan M. (Don) Tanner of Turtlepoint; a son, David M. (Janice Nolan) Schaub of Bellefonte; four granddaughters, Amy Schaub (Brian) Karfonta, Angela Schaub (Michael) Stebila, Anne Schaub Parise, and Sara Schaub (Aaron) Tyson; a grandson, Travis Tanner; 12 greatgrandchildren, Nolan and Adam Karfonta, Madison, Michael, Matthew, and Benjamin Stebila, Dominic, Abigail and Isabella Parise, and Anna, Jack, and Molly Tyson; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Lewis was predeceased by a son, Tim Schaub; and sisters, Dorothy Staiger and Kathryn Thompson.
Family and friends are welcome to pay their respects, Tuesday, June 18, 2024, from 6-8pm at the Thomas E. Fickinger Funeral Home, 210 N. East St., Coudersport and Wednesday, June 19, 2024, from 10am – 12pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 402 N. Main St., Coudersport, where a funeral service will be held at 12pm with Pastor Donald R. Caskey and Pastor Warren B. Cederholm, co-officiating. Burial will be in Eulalia Cemetery, Coudersport.
