An Introduction to Pennsylvania Native Bees At Bradford Area Public Library Thursday
Bradford, PA:
National Pollinator Week, June 17 – 23 is right around the corner! If you’re concerned about pollinators – and who shouldn’t be?! – one of the best and easiest actions you can take to assist them is to provide a space for them in your own garden. Join us as Dr. Mary Mulcahy, a biology professor at Pitt-Bradford, examines the essential elements and features that pollinators need to not only survive but thrive. Mulcahy will share some tips on pollinator-friendly yards and introduce the concept of an “equal opportunity garden” that takes an ecosystem view of lawns and home gardens.
Dr. Mulcahy possesses an interest in native plants, pollinators, and biodiversity in general. As a Master Gardener volunteer and a member of the Pennsylvania Bee Monitoring Team, Mulcahy is working to help researchers at Penn State University document native bee species in McKean County. She will give an update on what bee species have been documented so far in our local area and their fascinating natural history.
This free program will be held in the Bradford Area Public Library’s community room on Thursday, June 13 at 6 PM. All are encouraged to attend.
National Pollinator Week is a yearly event dedicated to increasing awareness about pollinators and their vital role in our ecosystem. The goal is to inspire individuals to take steps to safeguard these crucial organisms. Pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, moths, bats, beetles, and hummingbirds, play a vital role in plant reproduction by transferring pollen from male to female flowers.
