Bradford Area Public Library Celebrates National Library Week 2024
The theme for National Library Week 2024, “Ready, Set, Library!,” emphasizes that amidst our constantly connected online world, libraries offer a unique opportunity: a space to engage with others, acquire new skills, and focus on what truly matters. Our community is invited to engage in our library’s author talks, workshops, and book clubs.
Whether individuals are embarking on a new career, starting a business, or nurturing a family, our library serves as an inclusive and supportive community where everyone is welcome.
Prepare to delve into new worlds, find inspiration, and engage with our library this National Library Week. Libraries are here to support our communities every step of the way!
Bradford Area Public Library is offering a variety of programming opportunities throughout National Library Week; however, we wish to spotlight the following events:
On April 9th, at 6:30 pm, the Bradford Area Public Library will host “Indigenous Leaders: Their Stories” presented by Lance White Eagle. White Eagle belongs to the Western Band of Cherokee and the Rappahannock peoples. He is a performer who focuses on Indigenous American history, culture, and legends, and has been showcased at a variety of events, colleges, pow-wows, and news programs nationwide.
Lance has been captivating audiences with his unique blend of history and humor since the 1990s. However, his family has a long history of educating about Indigenous people for over 80 years. Lance’s father taught at Valley Forge Military Academy and served as the Master of Ceremonies at numerous pow-wows. His mother is a notable lecturer and guest professor specializing in Indigenous women and agriculture. Lance has conducted programs for Penn State University’s anthropology department, performed at Yale University, provided expertise for academic publications, and made appearances at pow-wows across various states including NJ, NY, OH, PA, VA, MD, TN, and KY.
Join us for an insightful program delving into the true stories of renowned Native American leaders throughout history. Have you ever wondered why paratroopers shout “Geronimo” during jumps or why names like Sitting Bull remain iconic? Discover the answers by attending this event at the library on the 9th.
Lance will share captivating tales about Geronimo, Mangas Coloradas, Sitting Bull, and Osceola. An opportunity for questions and further dialogue will take place following the presentation.
Students in grades 1 through 5 are invited to join an Eclipse Party on April 8th from 2:00 to 3:20. The event will kick off at the library, offering a chance for attendees to learn about eclipses and ancient civilizations’ beliefs linked to these celestial occurrences. Students will create their own myths and legends related to eclipses. The program will include space exploration activities like making nebulae and constellation tubes. Before observing the eclipse outside, participants will enjoy space-themed snacks. Eclipse glasses will be provided for safe viewing. Registration is required to attend. Visit the events calendar on the new BAPL website to easily register: https://bradfordlibrary.org/news-events/event-calendar.html.
Another children’s program will be held on Saturday, April 13th at 11AM and will assist children’s discovery of Earth Day. Kids will enjoy a story session and participate in entertaining activities that highlight the significance of protecting our planet.
